No full textThe public availability of datasets of teaching resources is an issue for the design, development and evaluation of Information Retrieval and Recommender Systems in Technology Enhanced Learning. Recently, the Dataset of Joint Educational Entities (DAJEE) has provided the community with a very exhaustive collection of resources coming from Massive Open Online Courses. This work proposes a representation of the DAJEE dataset according to Linked Data principles, interlinking the large amount of resources in DAJEE with the Web of Data. The transcript of the educational resources in DAJEE have been annotated through a Named Entity Recognition tool in order to create interlinks with the DBpedia entities. The DBpedia knowledge base provides additional information related to categories, that can be exploited to infer new knowledge and support reasoning processes.No Full Tex

A framework for comparing concept maps
No full textConcept maps are at the base of teaching activity and they are widely used in the process of creating courses. In the perspective of reusing learning materials, we could do the same (reuse) also with concept maps. Unfortunately concepts maps are hard to compare in an educational setting, as most of the algorithms applied to this task work mainly on structural similarity, and may take into limited account pedagogical issues. In this work, we consider some measures that take into consideration both structural and didactic aspects of the concept maps, such as the prerequisite relation and the commonality of concepts, and present a framework that allows teacher to draw and/or compare her concept map with maps proposed by other teachers, in order to highlight common pedagogical aspects
Enhancing categorization of learning resources in the DAtaset of joint educational entities
No full textThe DAtaset of Joint Educational Entities (DAJEE) is a repository which hosts more than 20,000 educational resources crawled from the MOOC platform Coursera. The resources are divided per category according to the MOOC categorization on Coursera, which is, however, very shallow. This contribution focuses on a more meaningful categorization of the resources in DAJEE, tailored to their content. To achieve such goal, our approach enriches the resources in DAJEE with semantic entities by applying state-of-the-art semantic techniques. The result is a significant improvement of the categorization of the resources in DAJEE than the previous version
A recommendation module to help teachers build courses through the Moodle Learning Management System
No full textIn traditional e-learning, teachers design sets of Learning Objects (LOs) and organize their sequencing; the material implementing the LOs could be either built anew or adopted from elsewhere (e.g. from standard-compliant repositories) and reused. This task is applicable also when the teacher works in a system for personalized e-learning. In this case, the burden actually increases: for instance, the LOs may need adaptation to the system, through additional metadata. This paper presents a module that gives some support to the operations of retrieving, analyzing, and importing LOs from a set of standard Learning Objects Repositories, acting as a recommending system. In particular, it is designed to support the teacher in the phases of (i) retrieval of LOs, through a keyword-based search mechanism applied to the selected repositories; (ii) analysis of the returned LOs, whose information is enriched by a concept of relevance metric, based on both the results of the searching operation and the data related to the previous use of the LOs in the courses managed by the Learning Management System; and (iii) LO importation into the course under construction
Giant Morgagni hernia and aorto-pulmonary collaterals in a Loeys-Dietz patient undergoing surgery for aortic root aneurysm and mitral valve prolapse
No full textThe case of a Loeys-Dietz syndrome patient undergoing mitral valve repair and composite aortic root and valve replacement is here described: preoperative CT scan unravelled a previously misdiagnosed Morgagni hernia (anterior diaphragmatic), containing omentum only, compressing the right ventricle. Intraoperatively, an abnormal oxygenated blood backflow into the left ventricle was observed, postoperatively found to be caused by major aorto-pulmonary collateral arteries. This is the 1st case of Morgagni hernia and systemic-pulmonary shunt ever reported associated with Loeys-Dietz syndrome. These congenital features may be important in both phenotyping and surgical management.Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) is a hereditary connective tissue disorder presenting with cardiovascular, facial, ocular, skeletal and joint manifestations.The case of a Loeys-Dietz syndrome patient undergoing mitral valve repair and composite aortic root and valve replacement is here described: preoperative CT scan unravelled a previously misdiagnosed Morgagni hernia (anterior diaphragmatic), containing omentum only, compressing the right ventricle.
