Introduzione
Il periodo di riferimento spazia dal Settecento agli anni Ottanta del secolo scorso e prende in considerazione diverse lingue in diversi periodi: cinese, francese, inglese, italiano, russo e spagnolo.n 1832, Bachi published a work that is considered the first university grammar book of Spanish for learners of Italian, who were not Italian native speakers. It was dedicated to students of Harvard University (USA). As far as Italian is concerned – although there are some other previous texts (Spagnolo de Monaci and D'Ovidio 1879) – Egidio Gorra’s work (Lingua e letteratura spagnuola delle origini), published by Hoepli in Milan (1898), constitutes the first historical grammar book specifically dedicated to a higher-education audience. It is a work intended for students of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Pavia, which includes many of the typical features of a university textbook. The purpose of the paper is to consider this characterization in light of previous Spanish grammars for Italian speakers, highlighting those elements that distinguish it as a university textbook
Researching discourses and contexts surrounding seniors: State-of-the art and future perspectives
The studies included in this edited volume explore discourses surrounding the ageing population, those who assist them, their families and the institutions/organisations that offer services to them. Qualitative and quantitative theoretical inputs from a variety of research domains – (socio)linguistics, anthropology, philosophy, cultural studies, cognitive science, as well as statistics and information technology – are employed to survey an array of themes that pay close attention to the linguistic, social, economic and ethical aspects regarding seniors. Different registers and genres are examined, which are produced by diverse diatopic distributions, diaphasic/diastratic variations and diamesic dimensions of the language.
All this underlines the importance of integrating various strands of analysis and multidisciplinary perspectives to attend to the complexity of a changing discourse and complex issue which are being looked at closely by the international scientific community. The book is suitable for a wide readership, including scholars and neophyte readers with an interest in discourse and cultural studies, sociolinguistics, and pragmatics
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) for Communications with Seniors and Non-Hearing Users at Public Spaces: Speech-To-Text Technology for Live Subtitling and Accessibility
Considered the increasing ageing and multilingualism of population in public space across Italy and Europe, the application of AI Technologies in multilingual communications and for the purposes of accessibility has become an important challenge in the production of translation and interpreting services. In particular, the widespread usage of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Automatic Speech Translation (AST) technology represents a significant, recent development in the attempt of satisfying the increasing demand for interinstitutional, multilingual communications at inter- governmental level. The application of ASR technology, combined with Neural Machine Translation (NMT), may allow for the breaking down of communication barriers between single speakers or among more individuals at European public conferences or public spaces. ASR technology can also facilitate the communication with older people and non- hearing users. Thanks to Speech to Text technology, it is possible to guarantee content accessibility for non- hearing audience via subtitles. Hence the need for analyzing and evaluating ASR output emerges: a quantitative approach will be adopted with the objective of assessing its accuracy. A small corpus of F.A.O.’s English- language speeches and conferences on the impact of Climate Change on the Agricultural Production is taken into consideration, which is then analyzed by applying a statistical approach based on NER model. Only three typologies of SR errors will be identified and evaluated and all errors will be statistically quantified by using an adapted version of the NER model on the basis of two different variables: Native and Non- Native Speakers. Subtitles have been compared to a gold standard corpus. The study is intended to demonstrate that ASR technology can be a valuable instrument to cope with the issues of communications with seniors and non- hearing persons in public European institutions and spaces where aging and multilingualism are posing new challenges
Somnambulism in Medical Dictionaries (1719-1775)
The essay maps the conceptualisation and lexicalisation of somnambulism in eighteenth-century medical lexicography
Theory, Practice or an Impracticable Combination of the two? Contradictory Ideas in Nineteenth-century Ministerial Syllabi for English in Italian Technical Schools
This contribution deals with the impact that the institutionalisation of modern foreign language teaching in post-Unification Italy had on the contents and the teaching approaches adopted in the new national education sector. Two official syllabi for the teaching of English as a foreign language in higher-rank state technical schools (istituti tecnici), issued in 1876 and 1886 respectively, are examined with the view of identifying the general ideas, continuities and changes in the approaches to modern foreign language teaching as endorsed in the official governmental documentation
«Mi può dare un’aspirina, per favore?». La presenza della lingua medica nei corsi di italiano L2: un’indagine e una ricognizione bibliografica
This research aims to answer a number of questions: does the language of medicine find space in the materials used for teaching Italian to foreigners? Does it find space in the teacher's didactic planning? Do the learners manifest the will and the need to deepen linguistically the subject?
The research methodology used was of a qualitative nature and was aided by four diagnostic tools: a bibliographic reconnaissance in the manuals of Italian to foreigners, a comparison with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe 2002, 2020), an electronic questionnaire addressed to a sample of teachers, an electronic questionnaire addressed to a sample of learners. The questionnaires were disseminated online via social networks and professional associations.
This survey, in its first phase, included a sample of 90 teachers of all levels and 186 learners of various ethnic backgrounds.
It seems safe to say that the teaching of the language of medicine as a language related to everyday life is underestimated and needs more investment in terms of didactic attention and materials
The integration of critical perspectives in ESP instruction: Social work students’ reflections on ageing identities and representations
The phenomenon of population ageing has created a greater demand for professionals with specialised knowledge and expertise who are willing to work with older people and better understand the complexity and diversity of later lives. Guided by the principle that a response to the needs and interests of older adults requires innovative pedagogies and research practices, the
current article presents the results of an ESP teaching intervention aimed to positively impact social work students’ beliefs regarding ageing and old age as well as their interest in working with older adults by bringing into focus the socially constructed, situated and ideological nature of language
and discourse. The study participants were involved in a series of task based activities, including critical text analysis as well as observations in local communities and interviews with older women and men in order to scrutinize the dominant ideologies and representations of later years and
to explore the diversity of individual pathways to ageing. Despite some limitations due to the small scale of the study, it can be observed that the adoption of accessible and eclectic critical approaches in the ESP context may be beneficial to challenge students’ assumptions about ageing and support them in developing skills and knowledge in gerontology
