Mercati finanziari e sicurezza sociale: corsi e ricorsi
Hybrid Quadrupole Time-of-Flight for the Determination of Chlorophenols in Surface Water by Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry
A QSTAR Pulsor quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer was used for the determination of chlorophenols in surface water samples. The investigated compounds were: 2-chlorophenol; 4chloro-3-methylphenol; 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and pentachlorophenol. Each analyte is listed by the US-EPA as a priority pollutant. Sample enrichment of water samples was achieved by a solid-phase extraction procedure, using a Waters Oasis HLB cartridges followed by LC-Tandem-MS. A narrow-bore 2.1-mm-i.d. reversed phase LC C-18 column operating with a mobile phase flow rate of 0.2 mL min(-1). was used to separate the analytes. The whole column effluent was diverted to the ion spray interface source. For the determination of the analytes the hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight spectrometer operated in product ion scan acquisition mode. Average recoveries from 2 L samples varied from 91 to 110% and relative standard deviations (RSD) were less than 10% for all samples. The limit of defection (signal-to-noise ratio=3) of the method for the phenols in drinking water samples is less than 10 ng L-1. In real environmental samples, levels of the selected analytes varied from non-detected" up to 0.5 mug L-1 for pentachlorophenol
Blood, urine and semen VOC pattern analysis for assessing health environmental impact in highly polluted areas in Italy
Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) analysis is usually applied in pollution assessment by checking for toxic or harmful volatile compounds volatiles in air, water and soil samples. In this study, exogenous VOCs and their derivatives, metabolized by cells, were valued into specific body fluids.
In particular, the VOC profiles of blood, urine and human semen samples collected from young men living in two high pollution areas in Italy, i.e. Land of Fires and Valley of Sacco River, were fingerprinted.
The analysis is based on Headspace Solid Phase Micro-extraction (HS-SPME) followed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometric detection (GC-MS). The volatile composition of the three body fluids showed that some VOCs are in common between blood, urine and human semen samples, whereas others are present only in a body fluid. Some compounds, as well as also some chemical classes show a higher affinity for a specific body fluid.
Statistical analysis allowed to discriminate the two contaminated areas and identify those compounds which significantly contribute to the two areas classification. Some of these compounds are toxic and found prevalently in Valley of Sacco River samples, correspondingly to sperm analysis results for young men living in this zona worse than those living in Land of Fires
The paper investigates the impact that the increasing attention given by EU law to sustainability issues is bound to have on board composition models. In particular, the author wonders if in the future can be ensured not even stakeholder participation in corporate governance, but at least a form of public control over the suitability of the board to implement sustainability policies
Exploring the Reverse Review Bombing Phenomenon: The Hogwarts Legacy Case
With the proliferation of the Internet and social platforms, we have witnessed the birth and spontaneous spread of online groups formed by users connected by common interests or passions (such as gaming, reading, etc.). While belonging to a particular group can trigger a positive mechanism in terms of sociability and identity reinforcement, it can also lead to members becoming rigidly attached to the same opinions and the emergence of shared visions (Howard & Magee, 2013). The term for this phenomenon is echo chambers and refers to the tendency of users to prefer content that most closely aligns with their beliefs (Jamieson & Cappella, 2008). Social networks thus become echo chambers where individualism and radicalism are prevalent (O'Hara & Stevens, 2015). Digital contexts, which are the result of complex social dynamics, thus become structures that can collapse due to phenomena such as manipulation of public opinion, online bullying, etc. (Huberman, 2010). Our work focuses on the "digital collapse" phenomenon caused by one or more events that generate public outrage and criticism on social media, which is called "shitstorm" (Sutherland, Coddington, Sellnow, 2016). This occurs mainly through posts, comments, or tweets that spread quickly on a social network to express disapproval. This phenomenon, comparable to boycotting, can have significant consequences for the individuals or organizations involved. One of the shapes of shitstorms is review bombing, a form of online protest in which a large number of users post negative reviews to influence the reputation of the offending object (Çiflikli, 2020). However, this phenomenon can have unexpected consequences: while it can be an effective way of expressing dissent, it can also harm the reputation of users who support the boycott by triggering reactions from the fan base felt under attack in the media and ultimately polarizing public opinion, which often has opposite effects (Hogg, Vliek, Child & Walker, 2020). Our investigation is based on an exploration of these social dynamics and it focuses on one of the most recent attempts at a shitstorm in the gaming world. It was used by some LGBTQ+ communities some days before the Hogwarts Legacy official release date, as the author of the Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling, had previously made some transphobic remarks. Due to a lot of Twitter posts inciting gamers to boycott the game by posting negative reviews, a shitstorm was created. To investigate the phenomenon, after a content analysis of the tweets that triggered the shitstorm, the review platform Metacritic.com was selected, from which the reviews of Hogwarts Legacy were extracted on all the platforms where it was published. Through content analysis and sentiment analysis, the most emerging themes were explored. The result of this campaign was, paradoxically, a reverse review bombing made of positive reviews, which probably had a positive effect on the game's visibility
Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells in COVID-19: The Paradox of Good
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Viral replication in the respiratory tract induces the death of infected cells and the release of pathogen- associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). PAMPs give rise to local inflammation, increasing the secretion of pro- inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, which attract immune cells from the blood into the infected lung. In most individuals, lung-recruited cells clear the infection, and the immune response retreats. However, in some cases, a dysfunctional immune response occurs, which triggers a cytokine storm in the lung, leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Severe COVID-19 is characterized by an impaired innate and adaptive immune response and by a massive expansion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). MDSCs function as protective regulators of the immune response, protecting the host from over-immunoreactivity and hyper-inflammation. However, under certain conditions, such as chronic inflammation and cancer, MDSCs could exert a detrimental role. Accordingly, the early expansion of MDSCs in COVID-19 is able to predict the fatal outcome of the infection. Here, we review recent data on MDSCs during COVID-19, discussing how they can influence the course of the disease and whether they could be considered as biomarker and possible targets for new therapeutic approaches

Innovative Approach for Human Semen Quality Assessment Based on Volatilomics
The volatilome profile of some biofluids (blood, urine, and human semen) identified by Solid-Phase Microextraction–Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS) and collected from young men living in two high-pollution areas in Italy, i.e., Land of Fires and Valley of Sacco River, have been coupled to sperm parameters obtained by spermiogram analysis to build general multiple regression models. Panels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been selected to optimize the models and used as predictive variables to estimate the different sperm quality parameters (sperm cell concentration, total and progressive motility/immotile cells, total/head/neck/tail morphology anomalies, semen round cell concentration). The results of the multiple linear regression models based on the different subgroups of data joining VOCs from one/two or three biofluids have been compared. Surprisingly, the models based on blood and urine VOCs have allowed an excellent estimate of spermiogram values, paving the way towards a new method of indirect evaluation of semen quality and preventive screening. The significance of VOCs in terms of toxicity and dangerousness was discussed with the support of chemical databases available online
