    AiDx Medical is a medical start-up, a spin-off from the TUD, which Temitope Agbana currently leads. AiDx is developing an automated diagnostic device for emerging markets: the AiDx assist. AiDx has chosen Nigeria for the first market introduction since Temitope has his prime partners there. The idea for creating the start-up started with developing a device that can automatically detect malaria parasites in a blood sample as an improvement for the current gold standard microscopy method.     Polyurethane Nanocapsules in TBI Treatment

    This study investigates the development and application of polyurethane nanocapsules for the controlled delivery and release of neuroprotective drugs such as Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) and Tempol with the objective of treating Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs). TBIs, a major health issue, causing considerable effects on individuals and healthcare systems globally, require innovative treatment approaches due to the intricate nature of the injury and the challenges in delivering drugs across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This thesis outlines the process of synthesis of polyurethane nanocapsules encapsulating EGCG and Tempol, leveraging their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to reduce the secondary injury phase after a traumatic brain injury. The properties of the nanocapsules were analyzed using dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The in-vitro release studies highlighted these nanocapsules' potential for both sustained and on-demand drug release, addressing the need for long-term treatment and adaptability in TBI management. This study highlights the potential of drug delivery systems enhanced with nanotechnology in overcoming the blood-brain barrier and improving therapeutic outcomes for TBI patients, paving the way for future clinical applications and advancements in neurotherapeutic interventions

This opinion paper would establish that organizations as a system are made up of interacting parts. The interdependence and interconnectedness of a system also generate data which is known as complexity or thinking data. This type of data is nonlinear in nature and can be used to easily map the mess or the interdependent, nondeterministic, grey area, multivariate and multidimensional variables that leaders and decision makers face on a day to day basis.     Migration of Nigerians to Canada for higher education:: Student visa as a pathway to permanent residence

    This study investigates the motivation for Nigerian migration to Canada for undergraduate education, with a focus on parent-sponsored undergraduate Nigerian students in Canadian universities. Using a qualitative research methods approach, the study shows that middle-class and upper-class Nigerians send their children to Canadian universities for undergraduate education because the student visa provides employment opportunities for international students, during and after studies, and Canadian permanent residence upon graduation. It is demonstrated in the paper that migration for higher education fits the neoliberal agenda of the current Canadian immigration policies and practices that target “designer im/migrants,” that is, im/migrants that are young, skilled, highly productive, educated, and self-sufficient. It is claimed throughout the paper that migration for higher education is not fortuitous for the parents and their wards and the Canadian state, as higher tuition paid by international students augments the declining public funding of post-secondary institutions in Canada and avails international students the opportunity of employment and permanent residence in Canada. The study in essence reveals the contradiction in the claim that the neoliberal state is a neutral entity as evidence shows that Canada’s post-secondary institutions implement neoliberal programs with the aid of the Canadian state

    Digital holography integrated with flow cytometry for detection of urinary schistosomiasis

    Schistosomiasis is an intravascular infection with major public health consequences in developing countries. It is one of the major Neglected Tropical Diseases with more than 240 million people infected and 800 million people at risk in 2015, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. It is caused by trematode parasites of the genus Schistosoma, in this report the focus was on Schistosomiasis Haematobium since it is the most prevalent form of the disease. One of the limiting factors of the control program is the standard diagnostic procedure set by World Health Organization, which is based on counting the parasite's eggs in a person's urine. Examination by microscopy requires the use of expensive microscopes, is prone to human errors and inconsistency, is time consuming, and uses filters which are often not available. The research objective was identified from these shortcomings: "Develop a low-cost, smart diagnostic method for Schistosomiasis Haematobium based on detecting eggs in urine by combining lensless imaging and flow cytometry, and developing Artificial Intelligence models for automated detection." In-line planar wavefront digital holography was identified as the most suitable lensless imaging method. A sample will be analyzed by the following repetitive procedure: (1)mechanically press the piston of a syringe by a small volume, (2)wait for the flow to stop, (3)record a hologram, (4)detect eggs. The implemented egg detection procedure consisted of a series of image processing algorithms: (1)apply Foreground detection, (2)localize the moving objects with a Blob detector, (3)locally reconstruct the hologram at the found locations, (4)classify the reconstruction as egg or not egg. The imaging method provided accurate reconstructions of eggs and the object detection algorithm was able to locate moving objects with sufficient accuracy and computational time. On the other hand, the lab and field tests showed that the data set of the classifier did not contain enough images to train a generalized model and that the local reconstruction and classification takes increasingly more time during analysis. As of now the method is an order of magnitude slower than an expert microscopist. The diagnostic method is not yet able fulfill the research objective. However, there are some promising aspects such as the low-cost imaging method, fast object detection algorithm, and absence of sample preparation which makes further research worthwhile.Mechanical Engineering | Systems and Contro

    MODELING VOLATILITY OF NIGERIA STOCK EXCHANGE USING GARCH MODELS

    <p><strong><span>Abstract:</span></strong><span> Financial and economic variables fluctuate owing to a variety of causes, including economic conditions, market pressures, government policies, global effects, industry-specific factors, and even random events. Addressing these fluctuations requires the development of accurate forecasting models to help market participants and policymakers adapt to the dynamic nature of stock market volatility. This research models the conditional mean and variance of Nigeria Stock Exchange Banking Index (NGX-BANK) by obtaining the ARIMA model that captures the linear dependency in the return and the optimal Symmetric or Asymmetric GARCH model that captures the time-varying volatility. The research obtained the Value at Risk and forecast future volatility. Ten years daily closing price were used to obtain the estimate of the ARIMA-GARCH, ARIMA-IGARCH, ARIMA-EGARCH and ARIMA-TGARCH models. The returns from the daily price were stationary but not normally distributed showing the asymmetric nature of the returns. ARIMA(2,0,1) captures the linear dependencies and temporal patterns present in the returns of the series. It was established that ARIMA(2,0,1)+EGARCH(4,4) was the optimal model that can capture the structured information regarding conditional mean and volatility. There were no indication of heteroscedasticity or autocorrelation in the ARIMA-EGARCH model's residual.
