Osteological development and homology of the prenasal bones in the neotropical toad Rhinella fernandezae (Anura: Bufonidae)
Bufonid toads of the Rhinella granulosa species group are reported to have paired prenasal bones typically absent in other bufonids. The homology of the prenasal bone is explored throughout ontogeny herein by studying larvae, froglets, and adult R. fernandezae. I found that these putative bones are actually part of the enlarged and exposed anterior ends of the septomaxillae. An unpaired prenasal bone not previously described for other toads was found at the anterior end of the snout of R. fernandezae. Its position, origin, and shape indicate this bone is a homologue with the prenasal described for some casque-headed hylids.Fil: Alcalde, Leandro.
Our objective was to characterize a resilient talar located within a suburban forest that has been invaded by exotic vegetation, in order to identify the patterns and processes currently affecting the native woody species.
Methods: The forest (55 ha) was divided into seven sampling sites. We assessed the abundance and physiognomic variables of native woody species through random searches (237 hours with 2 people). For woody exotics, we used a combination of transects and grids (96 hours with 2 people). The analyses included descriptive statistics, index calculations, one-way ANOVAs, and Kruskal-Wallis tests.
Results: Two native species co-dominated the talar: CT (88%) and SB (11%), while other native woody species were extremely rare (1%). Woody exotics were dominant both structurally and numerically, particularly five species that were extremely abundant in the area. Significant variation was observed in the height of CT and SB among forest sites, with individuals less than 3 meters tall being the most common. The Mantle Index varied significantly between older (balanced mantle) and younger (unbalanced mantle) trees, indicating strong competition for light due to shading from exotic species. The proportion of CT that were standing dead, crushed, damaged by basal pruning, or sprouting varied significantly among forest sites. SB was the only woody native that we did not find outside the forest area

Chondrocranium and skeletal development of Phrynops hilarii (Pleurodira: Chelidae)
The present study represents the first comprehensive contribution to the knowledge of the skeletal development of a pleurodiran turtle, Phrynops hilarii (Pleurodira, Chelidae). The most remarkable features found are: (1) absence of ascending process on pterygoquadrate cartilage; (2) presence of ossification centres for the epiotics; (3) as in other pleurodirans, dorsal ribs IX and X are ‘sacralized’; (4) contact between ilium and carapace occurs later in ontogenetic development; (5) suture between ischia, pubes and plastron occurs in posthatching specimens; (6) contrary to previous interpretations, the phalangeal formula of the pes of P. hilarii is 2 : 3 : 3 : 3 : 5; (7) the hooked bone represents the fifth metatarsal.Fil: Bona, Paula. On the anuran musculus pulmonum proprius
The present contribution provides a systematic survey on the variation of the musculus pulmonum proprius within Anura. Evidence is contrary to previous works that presented the muscle as an enigmatic feature present only in the family Pipidae. Although having different sites of origin, the m. pulmonum proprius was observed in all examined anurans. The muscle originates at the level of the transverse processes of the fourth vertebra in the neobatrachian families Bufonidae, Calyptocephalellidae, Ceratophryidae, Cycloramphidae, Dendrobatidae, Hylidae, Hylodidae, Leiuperidae, Leptodactylidae, Mantellidae, Microhylidae, Ptychadenidae and Ranidae. In Bombina variegata (Bombinatoridae) the origin of the muscle shifts caudally at the level of the transverse process of the sacral vertebra and, in Pipidae, it originates either at the ilium (Xenopus) or the femur (Pipa). Features of the m. pulmonum proprius do not vary in species with different modes of locomotion within Neobatrachia and there is no sexual dimorphism in this muscle. It is absent in the genera Salamandra (Caudata) and Chthonerpeton (Gymnophiona). Pending verification in Leiopelmatidae, the presence of m. pulmonum proprius may be considered as a previously unknown anuran synapomorphy.Fil: Alcalde, Leandro. Old and new hypotheses about the homology of the compound bones from the cheek and otico-occipital regions of the anuran skull
We have studied the larval development of compound bones from the otico-occipital and cheek regions in species of the neobatrachian genera Batrachyla, Hylorina, Leptodactylus, Odontophrynus and Pleurodema. Comparisons were made using a set of Ambystoma spp. (Caudata) and Ceratophrys ornata (Anura; Ceratophryidae) larvae. As with previous studies, we verified the compound nature of the exoccipital (two centres, anurans only), frontoparietal (one centre, most anurans and Ambystoma - three centres, some anurans), and squamosal (two centres, all anurans and Ambystoma) bones. We discuss old and new homology hypotheses for each of the compound bone centres in the context of the most widely accepted scenario of lissamphibian origins and relationships, i.e. a monophyletic Lissamphibia that contains the clade Batrachia (Caudata + Anura) and the most divergent Gymnophiona. Our findings have a direct impact on our understanding of the composition of the skull in Lissamphibia. We recognize the presence of the following bones: (1) opisthotic (fused to the exoccipital) and tabular (fused to the squamosal) in Batrachia (Anura + Caudata); and (2) supratemporal (fused to the parietal portion of the frontoparietal) in Anura. Separate centres of the parietal were found only in Pleurodema.Fil: Alcalde, Leandro. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Centro Científico Tecnológico La Plata.
