Expectation Towards Green Lawns to Enhance Quality of Life at Workplaces
AbstractDuring recent decades, green lawns have gradually become one of the main sources of greening in many cities in both developed and developing countries. Although, much research has received large attention to green lawns in residential places, few studies have addressed the benefits of having access to green lawns at workplaces to enhance the quality of life. More specifically, this study focused on the question of how employees view, socialize, and utilize their workplace green lawns. Leadership Cultural Values of United Arab Emirates-The Case of United Arab Emirates University
UAE is a young country with a young population that has witnessed tremendous changes over the past decades. There has not been much research about the cultural values of the UAE in generational perspectives, and there have been rapid changes. Therefore, this study aimed at exploring systematic changes in leadership cultural values among the older and the younger generations of the United Arab Emirates. The author utilized Hofstede’s (VSM08) instrument to survey undergraduate students, administrators and faculty at UAE University.
The study found no significant differences between the younger and older generations’ tolerance to unequal distribution of power (power distance), fear of the unknown (uncertainty avoidance), quality of life (feminism), tight knit social framework (individualisms) and the exhibition of short-term orientation.
Surprisingly, participants in this study scored significantly lower on power distance, masculinity and uncertainty avoidance than those in Hofstede’s original data that was collected 30 years ago. The specific characteristics of the represented sample, and the systematic value change were investigated as a possible explanation of the nation’s indices, and low masculinity in particular. Empirically, wealth and Western influence emerged to be the primary factor for the registered index scores, and the study unveiled generational struggles in a traditional, yet largely Westernized society
Woman’s image through Yemenite literature
L’objectif de cette étude est de dégager l’image - ou les images - de la femme telle qu’elle apparaît dans l’œuvre de quatre nouvellistes yéménites contemporains. En effet, s’agit-il, parlant de la femme, d’une représentation uniforme quelles que soient les problématiques abordées et quel que soit l’auteur ? Ou bien y a-t-il des variantes et si oui comment s’affirment-elles ? Cette thèse a donc pour but de montrer la variété des types de personnages féminins mis en scène, tout en précisant les stratégies énonciatives et narratives adoptés par chacun des auteurs en question. Elle est constituée de trois parties : la première présente un bref aperçu historique sur la littérature yéménite. La deuxième traite la question du patriarcat et du matriarcat, plus particulièrement, au Yémen. Quant à la dernière, elle consiste en l’analyse du corpus des nouvelles retenues. Elle est divisée en deux parties dont la première, composée de cinq chapitres, est pour l’essentiel focalisée sur deux images contradictoires de la femme : la femme soumise et la femme rebelle. La seconde se concentre sur l’amour et la sexualité en parlant de la relation amoureuse hors mariage, de celle entre époux, enfin, de l’inversion ironique des rôles attribués, par deux des nouvellistes, respectivement à l’homme et à la femme.The objective of the study is to highlight the image or the different images of womanas it appears in the work of four contemporary Yemenite short story writers. Sialic acid linkage-specific permethylation for improved profiling of protein glycosylation by MALDI-TOF MS
Protein glycosylation mediates a wide range of cellular processes, affecting development and disease in mammals. Deciphering the "glycocodes" requires rapid, sensitive and in-depth characterization of diverse glycan structures derived from biological samples. In this study, we described a two-step derivatization strategy termed linkage-specific sialic acid permethylation (SSAP) consisting of dimethylamination and permethylation for the improved profiling of glycosylation by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-fight (TOF) mass spectrometry (MS). High linkage-specificity (similar to 99%) of SSAP to both the two most common forms of sialic acid, N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) and N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc), permitted direct discrimination of alpha 2,3- and alpha 2,6-linked sialic acids in MALDI-TOF MS. The enhanced intensity (> 10-fold) and increased detection limit (> 10-fold) of derivatized glycans were valued for sensitive glycomics. Moreover, the good compatibility and reaction efficiency of the two steps of SSAP allowed rapid sample preparation (< 2 h), benefiting robust analysis of glycans in a high-throughput manner. The SSAP strategy was further applied to investigate the protein glycosylation of human serum associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It was demonstrated that the relative abundances of individual glycans were different in RA negative and RA positive samples, and meanwhile the RA patient/control ratios of both alpha 2,3- and alpha 2,6-sialylated glycans tended to elevate accompanied with the increase of sialylation. Those findings of the glycosylation changes occurred in human serum protein may contribute to the diagnosis of RA. Herein, SSAP derivatization combined with MALDI-TOF MS exhibits unique advantages for glycomic analysis and shows potential in glycosylation profiling of therapeutic proteins and clinical glycan biomarker discovery. Supplementation of Saussurea costus root alleviates sodium nitrite-induced hepatorenal toxicity by modulating metabolic profile, inflammation, and apoptosis
Sodium nitrite (NaNO2) is a widely used food ingredient, although excessive concentrations can pose potential health risks. In the present study, we evaluated the deterioration effects of NaNO2 additives on hematology, metabolic profile, liver function, and kidney function of male Wistar rats. We further explored the therapeutic potential of supplementation with S. costus root ethanolic extract (SCREE) to improve NaNO2-induced hepatorenal toxicity. In this regard, 65 adult male rats were divided into eight groups; Group 1: control, Groups 2, 3, and 4 received SCREE in 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg body weight, respectively, Group 5: NaNO2 (6.5 mg/kg body weight), Groups 6, 7 and 8 received NaNO2 (6.5 mg/kg body weight) in combination with SCREE (200, 400, and 600 mg/kg body weight), respectively. Our results revealed that the NaNO2-treated group shows a significant change in deterioration in body and organ weights, hematological parameters, lipid profile, and hepatorenal dysfunction, as well as immunohistochemical and histopathological alterations. Furthermore, the NaNO2-treated group demonstrated a considerable increase in the expression of TNF-α cytokine and tumor suppressor gene P53 in the kidney and liver, while a significant reduction was detected in the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-4 and the apoptosis suppressor gene BCL-2, compared to the control group. Interestingly, SCREE administration demonstrated the ability to significantly alleviate the toxic effects of NaNO2 and improve liver function in a dose-dependent manner, including hematological parameters, lipid profile, and modulation of histopathological architecture. Additionally, SCREE exhibited the ability to modulate the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines and apoptotic genes in the liver and kidney. The phytochemical analysis revealed a wide set of primary metabolites in SCREE, including phenolics, flavonoids, vitamins, alkaloids, saponins and tannins, while the untargeted UPLC/T-TOF–MS/MS analysis identified 183 metabolites in both positive and negative ionization modes. Together, our findings establish the potential of SCREE in mitigating the toxic effects of NaNO2 by modulating metabolic, inflammatory, and apoptosis. Together, this study underscores the promise of SCREE as a potential natural food detoxifying additive to counteract the harmful impacts of sodium nitrite.The author(s) declare that financial support was received for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article. Anaemia characteristic in end stage renal disease patients receiving haemodialysis at King Salman armed forced hospital in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia
BackgroundChronic kidney disease (CKD) is a disease associated with high rate of morbidity and mortality mainly due to cardiovascular disease. Anaemia is the most common haematological abnormality in end stage renal disease.AimsThe current Study aimed to determine the laboratory characteristic and management of anaemia among haemodialysis patients.Methods A cross sectional study conducted among 112 adult patients with the diagnosis of end stage renal disease (ESRD) on haemodialysis at King Salman Armed Forced Hospital in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, data were collected by a pre-tested data collection sheet.Results There were 112 patients with a mean age of 43 years. The mean haemoglobin value was 10.5g/dL, which was lower than the target haemoglobin range recommended by Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI). Twenty- eight patients (25 per cent) had haemoglobin values between 11.0 and 12.0g/dL. Only seven patients (6.3 per cent) exceeded the recommended range (>12g/dL) and seventy- seven (68.7 per cent) had less than recommended range. The majority of patients had been receiving haemodialysis for two or more years. The most common primary cause of end stage renal failure was diabetic nephropathy. Hypertension was the most common co-morbidity, followed by diabetes, and ischemic heart disease.ConclusionPatients with end stage renal disease at a high risk for anaemia which should be investigated for correctable causes such as Iron-deficiency before initiating erythropoietin replacement therapy
Effect of levothyroxine plus liothyronine combination therapy on hypothyroid patients quality of life
BackgroundLiothyronine combination with Levothyroxine(T4-T3) has been tried to improve the quality of life among hypothyroid patients on levothyroxine immunotherapy and normal thyroxine stimulating hormone levels. However, the efficacy of such a combination is unknown. The current review aimed to assess the effects of T4-T3 combination therapy on quality of life.AimsThe current review aimed to compare levothyroxine mono-therapy versus T4-T3 combination therapy on quality of life among hypothyroid patients.Methods The Pub Med and Google Scholar databases were systematically searched for relevant articles. Articles published in the English language from the first available article up to March 2020 were approached. The terms hypothyroidism, levothyroxine, and liothyronine were used. Out of hundred and eight articles retrieved, only six fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria.Results In majority of randomized control trials (4 out of 6 RCTs), T4/T3combination therapy fail to show superiority over the standard levothyroxine mono-therapy.ConclusionLevothyroxine remain the standard of care in hypothyroid patient
