No full textInternational audienceSinguliers albums que ceux de Béatrice Poncelet, aux deux sens de l'adjectif : ils peuvent paraître étranges, atypiques, et, dans le même temps, ils composent une oeuvre unique, originale, que l'on reconnaît d'emblée, alors même qu'elle fait appel à toutes les techniques, au point d'afficher, selon le mot de Sophie Van Der Linden, un « non style 1 ». Des albums « hors cadre(s 2) », qui déconcertent, voire découragent celui qui se contente d'un rapide feuilletage, s'interroge sur leur destinataire et les juge d'accès trop difficile pour les enfants. Ces albums inclassables ne présentent pas de personnages identifiables et ne racontent pas vraiment d'histoires. On voit des objets, des décors. On entend des voix, jamais référencées. Texte et image se lient dans un entrelacs aux mailles serrées qui correspond à la définition de l'iconotexte, par Alain Montandon, comme « genre » essentiellement dialogique, qui se tient à l'écart de « ses deux bords externes que sont la légende et l'illustration 3 ». De par sa formation, Béatrice Poncelet apparaît avant tout comme artiste 4 et graphiste ; lorsqu'elle compose un ouvrage, le travail sur les images est premier, mais, dans l'album achevé, le texte s'avère indispensable : sans lui, elles ne sont pas lisibles, de même que, sans images, le texte resterait lettre morte. Ecrit par bribes, et progressivement intégré à l'ensemble plastique et graphique, il n'est pas pour autant subalterne : son emplacement est réservé, inclus dans l'image, à laquelle, par delà les fonctions d'ancrage et de relais définies par Barthes, il sert de révélateur ; de plus, il comporte lui-même, par les choix de mise en page et de typographie, une forte part d'iconicité. Pour évoquer la singularité de ce que Poncelet elle-même appelle, de façon un peu expéditive, ses « bouquins », je m'attacherai successivement aux voix entendues et aux objets montrés, avant de souligner comment, alors que la complexité de l'oeuvre captive le lecteur adulte, Poncelet se pose toujours la question du jeune lecteur, et justifie son inscription dans le champ de la littérature de jeunesse. Il s'agit, en somme, de montrer en quoi ces albums sont des lectures pour tous
Effective shear speed in two-dimensional phononic crystals
No full textThe quasistatic limit of the antiplane shear-wave speed ('effective speed') c in 2D periodic lattices is studied. Two new closed-form estimates of c are derived by employing two different analytical approaches. The first proceeds from a standard background of the plane wave expansion (PWE). The second is a new approach, which resides in x-space and centers on the monodromy matrix (MM) introduced in the 2D case as the multiplicative integral, taken in one coordinate, of a matrix with components being the operators with respect to the other coordinate. On the numerical side, an efficient PWE-based scheme for computing c is proposed and implemented. The analytical and numerical findings are applied to several examples of 2D square lattices with two and three high contrast components, for which the new PWE and MM estimates are compared with the numerical data and with some known approximations. It is demonstrated that the PWE estimate is most efficient in the case of densely packed stiff inclusions, especially when they form a symmetric lattice, while in general it is the MM estimate that provides the best overall fitting accuracy.Peer reviewe
Effective Willis constitutive equations for periodically stratified anisotropic elastic media
No full textA method to derive homogeneous effective constitutive equations for periodically layered elastic media is proposed. The crucial and novel idea underlying the procedure is that the coefficients of the dynamic effective medium can be associated with the matrix logarithm of the propagator over a unit period. The effective homogeneous equations are shown to have the structure of a Willis material, characterized by anisotropic inertia and coupling between momentum and strain, in addition to effective elastic constants. Expressions are presented for the Willis material parameters which are formally valid at any frequency and horizontal wavenumber as long as the matrix logarithm is well defined. The general theory is exemplified for scalar SH motion. Low frequency, long wavelength expansions of the effective material parameters are also developed using a Magnus series and explicit estimates for the rate of convergence are derived.Peer reviewedReceived July 22, 2010; accepted December 15, 2010; published online April 21, 2011. No full textA partir d'une vingtaine de récits de vie de recherche auprès de patients en rémission d'un cancer, Virginie Poncelet tâche de répondre à la question suivante : la souffrance psychique joue-t-elle un rôle dans l'apparition d'un cancer ? L'auteur part de l'hyptohèse que le cancer est originé en première instance par des facteurs qui n'ont rien à voir avec la souffrance psychique mais que celle-ci créerait un terrain favorable au développement du cancer.
Au fil des études de cas et du parcours d'auteurs ayant écarté un modèle hystérique (selon une grille de lecture symbolique) de compréhension de la maladie, elle construit progressivement un modèle qui puisse rendre compte du type et de la part de souffrance psychique impliquée dans l'apparition d'un cancer. Les sentiments d'inexistence et d'abandon, dans un contexte de rupture(s) ou d'impasse(s) existentielle(s), couplé à un sentiment d'impuissance ou à un état d'épuisement semblent jouer un rôle primordial dans la survenue d'un état dépressif explicite ou latent qui met alors à mal les régulations habituelles de l'organisme et laisse surgir la maladie dans un endroit fragilisé de l'organisme. / From some twenty people research life stories of patients in remission of cancer, Virginie Poncelet attempts to answer the following question : does psychic suffering play a part in cancer appearance ? The author starts from the hypothesis that the origin of cancer is in first place due to factors which have nothing to do with psychic suffering but this would create a propitious ground to cancer development. Along with the case studies et the course of authors who set aside un hysterical model (from a symbolical pattern) of disease comprehension, she constructs progressively a pattern which can give an account of type and part of psychic suffering involved in cancer appearance. Feelings of non-existence and giving up, in a context of existential(s) rupture(s) or impasse, along with a helplessness feeling or a state of exhaustion may play an important part in the advent of depressive state, explicit or latent, which then harms the usual regulations of organism and let rise disease in a fragilized place of organism.(PSY 3)--UCL, 200

No full textLe polytechnicien et officier du Génie Jean-Victor Poncelet entame au milieu des années 1820 une longue carrière d’enseignant, qui le verra professer la mécanique successivement à l’École de l’Artillerie et du Génie de Metz et à la Sorbonne. Ces deux prestations didactiques sont analysées ici dans une perspective particulière qui envisage le cours magistral comme un objet « fabriqué » d’abord, « mis sur le marché » et « consommé » ensuite, par les divers publics d’auditeurs et de lecteurs qui l’ont reçu.In the mid-1820s, the Polytechnique graduate and engineering officer Jean-Victor Poncelet began a long teaching career, which would see him lecture in mechanics first at the École de l’Artillerie et du Génie (School of Artillery and Engineering) at Metz and then at the Sorbonne. The author examines these two didactic performances from a specific perspective which considers the lecture first as a “manufactured” object that is “put on the market” and then “consumed” by the various audiences of hearers and readers who receive it.Jean-Victor Poncelet absolvierte sein Studium erfolgreich an der École Polytechnique in Paris und wurde Machinenbauoffizier. No full textThis research work investigates the immune reaction which occurs after allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells transplantation in a swine model of subacute ischemic cardiomyopathy.
The degree of MHC disparity selected in this experimental model is a one-haplotype MHC Class I and Class II mismatch that mimics an allogeneic transplantation from F1generation into parents.
Prior to a series of in vivo experiments, the authors analyzed in vitro the MHC expression of swine mesenchymal stem cells in the context of inflammation, the T-cell proliferative responses to naïve and stimulated allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells.
The immuno-modulatory properties of MSCs on T cell proliferation are described and potential mechanisms of action are studied.
In vitro experiments revealed that in a pro-inflammatory cytokine environment, naïve swine mesenchymal stem cells up-regulate MCH Class I and Class II molecules on their cell surface, but failed to trigger recipient T cell proliferation.
MSC can efficiently down-modulate T cell proliferation and this effect is not dependent on a Th2-type immune deviation, and is not mediated by the production of immuno-modulatory cytokines such as TGF-beta. It is dose-dependent and does not require cell-to-cell contact.
In Vivo experiments revealed that immune B- and T-cell responses to allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells transplantation were triggered in the absence of immunosuppression. The design of the work allowed for investigate the role of the site of transplantation as well as the number of episode of cell transplantation.
A single episode of allogeneic MSC transplantation into an injured myocardium elicited the production of cytotoxic and donor-specific antibodies as well as a donor-specific T-cell response.
In order to avoid rejection, this research work further explores in vitro the interaction between
MSCs and immunosuppressive drugs. Based on proliferation and viability assays as well as on their synergistic effect on down-modulating recipient T-cell proliferation, the authors showed that important differences existed between drugs used.
In the second set of In Vivo experiments, this work demonstrates that a 12-day course of tacrolimus at the time of allogeneic MSC intracardiac transplantation can efficiently down-modulate recipient B- and T-cell responses.
At one month, no significant CD3(+) T-Cell infiltration was present after cell transplantation in the injured myocardium, though an increase in macrophages was noticed, likely related to a tissue clearing process of apoptotic stem cells.
Finally, the authors explored the neo-angiogenic effect of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cell transplantation. A four-fold increase in the density of neo-capillaries in the remote zone of myocardium adjacent to the fibrotic scarred tissue was demonstrated one month after MSC transplantation, suggesting that one of the mechanisms of action of MSC transplantation was recruitment of hibernating myocardium.
