A Critical Cognitive Semiotics Approach to Character Construction and Heroism: : Analyzing Mahmoud Al-Khatib’s Novel ʾAṣluhā Thābit
This study examines the pivotal role of the main character in Mahmoud Al-Khatib’s novel ʾAṣluhā Thābit, focusing on how the character’s construction conveys how meaning and significance are produced and comprehended. The novel’s main character, marked by both centrality and heroism, shapes and reflects the novel’s thematic depth through recurring motifs and influence. Following Ibrahim Taha’s critical cognitive semiotics approach, the analysis uncovers the various layers of meaning and significance embedded in Al-Khatib’s novel. The novel particularly highlights the existential concern and ideological need to preserve land and resist the power structures of colonialism that seek to marginalize the Arab Palestinian minority living in Israel. These dynamics frame the main character’s journey, demonstrating his role as a ‘semi-hero’ who achieves particular objectives but whose quest remains unsuccessful due to the circumstantial constraints found in his context. Al-Khatib’s main character thus illustrates the dynamic and anecdotal nature of meaning and significance as they evolve through continuing cycles of real and fictional interpretations and reinterpretations, further showing how characters are not only constructed for fictional semiotic purposes but also to depict real human subjects
The Jerusalemite Researcher and Writer Mahmoud Shuqair
The writer, politician, and thinker Mahmoud Shuqair was born in Jabal al-Mukaber, Jerusalem, in 1941. It was here, in Jabal al-Mukaber, that he grew up, spending his childhood playing football—sometimes with a seven-layered skin ball, other times with a simple strip ball, and occasionally with a proper soccer ball. Shuqair also enjoyed the traditional game of jalul (marbles), where children competed to win each other’s marbles. Another favorite was the game of bulbul, which involved spinning a small wooden top with a metal point. Tied with a hemp string to the child's little finger, the top was thrown into a circle, and the goal was to knock the opponent’s bulbul out of the circle, leaving them among the losers. This paper will provide a comprehensive overview of Shuqair’s life, literary contributions, and cultural impact of his work. We will cover the details of his early life, education, and evolution as a storyteller, highlighting his prolific output across various literary genres, including short stories, novels, children's literature, and biographies. In addition, the paper underscores Shuqair’s deep connection to Jerusalem, evident in his works that capture the city's cultural, historical, and political essence

The political activity of Mahmoud al-Taleqani in the Iranian revolution until September 1979 AD
After the victory of the revolution in Iran in February 1979, Mahmoud Al-Talqani sought to do his best for its success, despite the observations he was indicating on the activity of the revolutionary committees, which were the military arm of the extremist religious current led by Mr. Khomeini. Some forces tried to create a rift between Mahmoud Al-Talqani And the other leaders of the revolution for personal goals, but Mahmoud Al-Talqani was aware of this and spoiled all the attempts that took place during the first months of the Iranian revolution. Freedoms, however, were not a reason for standing against the general goal of the revolution, which is to rid the Iranian people of the injustice that they have been suffering from over the past decades, which calls for the concerted efforts of all national forces, whether secular or religious
Nubia Museum
General view, from above and looking northeast, showing the various levels of the roof with the entrance at left; In the early 1960's, when Egypt built the High Dam at Aswan, Egyptologists and archaeologists the world over heeded UNESCO's appeal to salvage the monuments of Egyptian Nubia before the rising waters of Lake Nasser submerged them forever. Due to the quantities of material recovered from tombs, temples and settlements, UNESCO was encouraged in the 1980's to plan a new Nubian museum in Aswan where the objects could be stored and exhibited. It was universally felt at the time that they should be kept as close as possible to their principal places of origin. Nearly twelve years later, the Museum became a reality and opened its doors in November 1997. It was designed by the late Egyptian architect Mahmoud al-Hakim, and Mexican architect Pedro Vasquez Ramirez designed the museum's interior display. The Museum won the Agha-Khan Award of Architecture 2001. Source: Nubia Museum [website]; http://www.numibia.net (accessed 1/19/2008
