After an introduction on the sacrament from its origins to the Protestant Reformation, this book considers how it changed the customs and habits of society, on not only behavioural and imaginative levels, but also artistic and figurative level. The author focuses on Counter-Reformation Italy as a laboratory for the whole of Christendom subject to Rome, and reflects on how, even today, the transformations of the modern age are relevant and influence contemporary debate. This book offers an innovative path through the history of a sacrament, with consideration of its impact as an ‘object’ that was used, venerated, eaten, depicted and celebrated far beyond the sphere of liturgical celebration. The Heresy of the Brothers, a Heterodox Community in Sixteenth-Century Italy
No full textA study of one of the largest Italian heretical communities, that developed in the city of Modena in the sixteenth century.
Around the mid-sixteenth century, one of the largest Italian heterodox communities developed in Modena: the community of ‘Brothers’. At the beginning of the century, a flourishing humanistic tradition had inspired protests against the authority of the Church and had led many of the city’s prominent figures to sympathize with Luther and the Reformation. Over the following decades, such positions became more extreme: most of the ‘Brothers’ held radical convictions, ranging from belief in predestination to contestation of the Antichrist pope. In some cases, the ‘Brothers’ even went so far as to deny the value of baptism.
This heterodox community in Modena created a hidden network for the free expression of its reformed faith. Within twenty years, however, the election of Pope Pius V (1566–1572) and the consolidation of the Holy Office led to a harsh campaign to disperse dissenters in the city. Despite the protection of illustrious members of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, the bishops of Modena, and the dukes of Ferrara, the Holy Office succeeded in repressing the community. The history of the ‘Brothers’ of Modena therefore provides a case study for understanding how the Inquisition influenced the balance of religious Italy, changing the face of the Peninsula forever

No full textChi fu Egidio Foscarari? Per molti oggi il suo nome è quello di un personaggio minore del Cinquecento religioso. In realtà, le questioni che fu chiamato ad affrontare lo videro impegnato, spesso con ruoli di primo piano, su alcuni dei fronti più caldi del momento. Domenicano e teologo, partecipò ai lavori del Sant’Ufficio per la stesura del primo Indice romano e, negli ultimi anni di vita, fu incaricato di compilare il Catechismo tridentino e di riformare il Breviario e il Messale. Principale collaboratore di Giovanni Morone alla chiusura del concilio di Trento, venne riconosciuto da tutti come uno dei più autorevoli membri dell’assemblea. Quando fu destinato come vescovo alla diocesi di Modena, cercò di riassorbire con mitezza il dissenso religioso spendendosi per una riforma della Chiesa incentrata sul rigore morale e la povertà. Ciò nonostante, l’Inquisizione lo processò e continuò a ritenerlo un pericoloso fiancheggiatore di eretici, di cui bisognava in ogni modo cancellare il ricordo
Pietro Campori. Il papa mancato
No full textPietro Campori, scrisse nel 1643 il suo biografo, non arrivò agli onori con il denaro ma con la virtù. La vicenda del cardinale Campori, nato nella Garfagnana estense e avviato sin dalla giovinezza alla carriera di Curia, si inserisce nel quadro degli anni tra Controriforma e età barocca. Dopo un apprendistato presso le principali corti europee, da Madrid a Praga, Campori seguì le sorti del vescovo Cesare Speciano, di cui fu a lungo segretario. Affiliato al partito dei Borghese, alla morte di Paolo V il suo nome prese a circolare tra i cardinali chiamati a scegliere il nuovo pontefice. Sfumata la sua elezione per pochi voti, Campori veniva destinato da papa Gregorio XV alla diocesi di Cremona, dove avrebbe trascorso il resto della vita attraversando i momenti difficili della Guerra dei Trent'Anni e della peste. Munifico protettore delle arti, il cardinale Campori non fu meno attento ai propri affari, acquistando per i nipoti un piccolo feudo in terra estense, dove ancora oggi rimangono le sue tracce. Questo volume, frutto del primo convegno di studi dedicato a Pietro Campori, offre un ritratto complesso e articolato del personaggio e del suo tempo, tracciando un affresco del contesto politico, culturale e figurativo in cui visse e operò

Over time, however, the confraternities underwent major changes to their corporate identity and subsequently adapted their statutes to reflect those changes. The article also charts the documentary lineage of the regulations that governed Modena’s confraternities, revealing the complexity of both internal and external influences that affected the ways in which the societies designed, updated, and enforced their statutes
