Bitrate modeling of scalable videos using quantization parameter, frame rate and spatial resolution
The quality and bitrate modeling is essential to effectively adapt the bitrate and quality of videos when delivered to multiplatform devices over resource constraint heterogeneous networks. The recent model proposed by Wang et al. estimates the bitrate and quality of videos in terms of the frame rate and quantization parameter. However, to build an effective video adaptation framework, it is crucial to incorporate the spatial resolution in the analytical model for bitrate and perceptual quality adaptation. Hence, this paper proposes an analytical model to estimate the bitrate of videos in terms of quantization parameter, frame rate, and spatial resolution. The model can fit the measured data accurately which is evident from the high Pearson correlation. The proposed model is based on the observation that the relative reduction in bitrate due to decreasing spatial resolution is independent of the quantization parameter and frame rate. This modeling can be used for rate-constrained bit-stream adaptation scheme which selects the scalability parameters to optimize the perceptual quality for a given bandwidth constraint
Role of computed tomography in the evaluation of pediatric brain tumor
A total of forty two clinically diagnosed pediatric brain tumors were studied over a period of two years. The study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of computed tomography (CT) in pre-operative diagnosis of pediatric brain tumors by correlating the imaging findings with postoperative histopathological findings. Site, density, mass effect and contrast enhancement of the lesion were studied as primary efficacy variables of CT scan. In the present study, the common pediatric brain tumors were astrocytoma, medulloblastoma, craniopharyngioma and ependymoma. In 18(42.9%) cases the tumors were supratentorial and in 24 (57.1%), they were infratentorial in location. The findings of CT scan in different intracranial neoplasm strongly correlated with those of histopathology. The validity tests for CT scan were found to be 88.9% sensitive, 100% specific and about 95% accurate in diagnosing astrocytoma. Similarly the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for medulloblastoma were 100%, 96.9% and 97.7% respectively. For craniopharyngioma the values were 85.7%, 100% and 97.7% respectively. The study concludes that CT is an invaluable imaging modality in preoperative diagnosis of pediatric brain tumor due to its excellent characterization of tumors. Effect of conditioning and 3-year aging on the bond strength and interfacial morphology of glass-ionomer cement bonded to dentin
Background/purpose: Glass-ionomer cement (GIC) is bioactive and independent. Bioactivity, which is a big trend in restorative dentistry. When they actively stimulate with microbiological species besides their primary function of restoring tooth structure then restorative materials should called “bioactive” materials. The purpose of this study was to determine the bond stability and the change in interfacial ultra-structure of a conventional glass-ionomer cement bonded to dentin, with and without pre-treatment using a polyalkenoic acid conditioner. Material and methods: The occlusal dentin surfaces of six teeth were ground flat. Glass-ionomer cement was bonded to the surfaces either with or without polyalkenoic acid conditioning. The teeth were sectioned into 1-mm2 stick-shaped specimens. The specimens obtained were randomly assigned to two groups with different periods of storage in water: 1-week and 3-year. The micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) was determined for each storage time. Additional specimens were prepared for interfacial analysis by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM); they were produced with or without prior polyalkenoic acid conditioning in the same way as in the μTBS test. Results: There was no significant difference in μTBS to conditioned dentin and non-conditioned dentin (p > 0.05). The failures appeared to be of a mixed nature, although aging caused more areas of cohesive than adhesive failure in both groups. Conclusion: Aging did not reduce the bond strength of the conventional glass-ionomer cement to dentin with or without the use of a polyalkenoic acid conditioner. Remineralized dentin layer were observed in both conditioned and unconditioned 3-years specimens
Role of selective neck dissection over anti-TB therapy in retreating patients
Background: Tuberculous cervical lymphadenopathy (TCL) remains a significant public health challenge, particularly in developing countries. This study aimed to analyze the demographic characteristics, treatment responses, and management outcomes in patients with TCL, focusing on the effectiveness of standard anti-TB medication and the role of surgical interventions in non-responsive cases.
Methods: This retrospective comparative analysis was conducted at the Department of Otolaryngology, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh, from July 2019 to July 2023. The study included 189 patients diagnosed with TCL. Patients were categorized based on their response to standard anti-TB medication over a period of one year and the subsequent management strategies adopted for non-responsive or slow-responsive cases.
Results: The study predominantly involved younger individuals (71.43% aged 15-30 years) with a higher representation of females (68.25%). A significant majority (61.38%) reported symptoms for more than one month. After six months of treatment, 33.86% showed a response to medication, increasing to 46.56% after one year. However, 19.58% exhibited slow or no response. Among non-responsive or slow-responsive cases, 18.92% opted for neck dissection, while 59.46% eventually showed a complete response to medication. The incidence of TB relapse was 6.35%, with the majority occurring at the primary infection site.
Conclusions: The study underscores the effectiveness of standard anti-TB medication in most TCL cases, with surgery as a secondary option for specific non-responsive or complicated cases. These findings highlight the need for early detection and individualized treatment strategies, emphasizing medical management as the cornerstone of TB treatment, with surgical interventions reserved for select scenarios
Student Perception of Online Teaching in Undergraduate Dental Education in Bangladesh: A Qualitative Study
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the education sector of Bangladesh suffered a lot. To adapt to this uncertain situation, the online teaching–learning method was introduced for the first time in the dental colleges to continue regular classes. This qualitative study explored the in-depth perception among students of this new, affordable, flexible online learning method and to find out the scope of improvement of the delivery method. Two focus group discussions (FGD) were conducted, each including 6–8 participants (N = 16, the male/female ratio was 7:9) for gaining an in-depth understanding of the perception of online teaching among dental students. With the help of the trigger questions, the facilitator and moderators conducted both FGDs. By analyzing the focus group discussion, four distinct themes were identified. The main themes extracted from the data refer to the difficulties which students faced during participation in online classes (e.g., low attention span, unusual timing of classes, internet accessibility, power cut, boring content, etc.), advantages of online learning (e.g., saves time, able to continue studying during the lockdown, saves money, avoids commuting, being safe during a pandemic situation, one can participate in classes if sick, etc.), disadvantages of online classes (e.g., not feasible for clinical classes and lab works, lack of social interactions, lack of group study, long screen time, lack of after-class peer discussion, lack of engagement, etc.), and also scopes of improvements (e.g., technological training for staff, recorded classes, technological orientation for students, more engaging contents, online support, more interactive lessons, short duration of the class, break after 30–45 min, and also teachers training for online facilitation, etc.). In Bangladesh, the online teaching–learning method is not a regular practice. Most of the institutions were forced to adopt this method on very short notice because of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Online education in a clinical subject such as dentistry requires a special training program, online content preparation, and interactive lesson delivery setup, which are big challenges for a resource-constrained medical education setup. The focus group discussion unveiled some key issues which indicated that there are many scopes for improvement in online teaching methods. With the help of the medical education department and through faculty development, the online learning sessions can be made attractive as well as beneficiary for the key stakeholders
Middle-income women in Dhaka city: gender and activity space
This study aims to understand the activity patterns and gender relations of middle- income working women in Dhaka City in private and public space. A total of seventy- five middle-income working women from three age groups; under 30 (unmarried), 30-50 (married), and over 50 (married) were interviewed in three different areas of the city, Azimpur, Mohammadpur, and Maghbazar. Case histories of six women, two from each age group, were recorded. The study shows that the involvement of middle-income women in activities which take them, into public spaces has increased considerably during recent years and women are now more visible in public places than in the near past. For economic reasons and also due to changing attitudes, such women are now substantially involved in the job market and. many of them., particularly the young and educated, carry executive responsibilities on an equal footing with men. Working women, like men, contribute a significant portion of their income to the family budget. Women's higher level of education and their involvement in employment have given them, more power and autonomy in family decisions. The household workload of the working women has not changed in the course of time. Irrespective of their level of education or grade of employment, middle-income working women are overloaded by their household activities, particularly cooking, within their private space. The rapid changes from, extended families to nuclear families have created new constraints for these women, particularly with regard to childcare. The everyday and lifetime activity space of middle-income working women in the city of Dhaka have expanded considerably in recent years. Their mobility depends not only upon their level of education but also upon their occupational type and employment status. Young women's daily movement pattern is more frequent and extensive than that of older women
Cost Benefit Analysis of Agricultural Production in Khulna and Patuakhali Districts of Bangladesh
Bangladesh is one of the largest deltas in the world, which is highly vulnerable to Natural Disasters because of its Geographical location, Flat and low-lying landscape, Population density, Poverty Illiteracy, Lack of Institutional setup, etc. In other words, Bangladesh's Physical, Social, and Economic conditions are typical of any of the most vulnerable countries to Natural Disasters in the world (M. Biswas, 2013). As the world’s seventh most climate risk-affected country, with 185 extreme events recorded and 0.38 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants over the past two decades, Bangladesh must adapt rapidly to climate change while simultaneously accessing cleaner, more efficient technologies that support development, leverage co-benefits (such as in health, air and water quality) and limit emissions. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicts that climate change-induced impacts could result in a 10% decline in rice production and a substantial 30% reduction in wheat production in Bangladesh by 2050 (IPCC, 2007)
