An exploration of disinfection by-products formation and governing factors in chlorinated swimming pool water
No full textThis paper investigates disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation and their relationship with governing factors in chlorinated swimming pools. The study compares concentrations of DBPs with WHO guidelines for drinking water quality recommended to screen swimming pool water quality. The statistical analysis is based on a global database of 188 swimming pools accumulated from 42 peer-reviewed journal publications from 16 countries. The mean and standard deviation of dichloroacetic acid and trichloroacetic acid were estimated as 282±437 and 326±517 μg L 1, respectively, which most often surpassed the WHO guidelines. Similarly, more than half of the examined pools had higher values of chloral hydrate (102±128 μg L 1). The concentration of total chloramines (650±490 μg L 1) was well above the WHO guidelines in all reported cases. Nevertheless, the reported values remained below the guidelines for most of the studied pools in the case of total trihalomethanes (134±160 μg L 1), dichloroacetonitrile (12±12 μg L 1) and dibromoacetonitrile (8 ±11 μg L 1). Total organic carbon, free residual chlorine, temperature, pH, total nitrogen and bromide ions play a pivotal role in DBPs formation processes. Attitude of University Students towards the Teaching Profession in Pakistan: A Case of Public Sector Universities
Get PDFTeaching is considered a noble profession all over the world (Chakraborty and Mondal 2015). For a successful teaching-learning process, teachers must have an interest and favourable attitude towards teaching. The primary objective of the study was to explore the attitude of university students towards the teaching profession. The attitude of students was also compared based on gender, university affiliation, and disciplines. For this purpose, the ‘Attitude Scale towards Teaching Profession’ questionnaire by Tezci and Terzi (2010) was adapted. Data was collected from 598 respondents of two public sector universities in Pakistan i.e., The Islamia University of Bahawalpur and Fatima Jinnah Women University – both public sector universities in the province of Punjab by using convenient sampling technique. Of the 598 respondents, 384 were females and 214 were males. Google forms were used for the collection of data. For data analysis Independent T-test and one-way ANOVA were applied. Results showed that there was no significant difference in attitude towards the teaching profession in terms of gender and university affiliation. No full textThe seeds of twenty-five varieties/cultivars of mungbean were evaluated in respect of proximate assays, chemical composition, and nutritional values with the aim to ensure the suitability of the foodstuff for human consumption. The average fiber content of the tested varieties/cultivars was 4.85±0.04% while potassium (K) ranges from 250 to 938 and phosphorus (P) from 371 to 464 mg 100 g − 1. The tested cultivars contained micronutrients including Zn, Fe and Cu with average value of 30.70, 104.00 and 3.84 mg kg−1, respectively. Alpha (α-), Gamma (γ-) and Sigma (δ-) tocopherols were also present in mungbean seeds with average value of 25, 1962 and 670 mg kg−1. Among toxic heavy metals, average Cd, Cr and Pb were present at 0.22, 3.23 and 1.64 mg kg−1, respectively, indicating some values above the maximum permissible limit set under various rules and regulations. The content of phytic acid varied from 0.45% to 1.22% in these varieties and it was observed that the phytates were existed in negative correlation with Zn content. Aflatoxins AFB1 and AFB2 were 48% and 16% above the maximum permissible limits, respectively, while AFG1 and AFG2 were found to be below the permissible limits in all the tested varieties/cultivars. The results of the study showed the essential minerals and protein, nutritional and anti-nutritional characters of mungbean varieties/cultivars, which are potential health determinants and can be used to characterize food quality in human healthcare
An Unusual Case of Gallbladder Carcinoma with Pseudopancreatic Cyst
Get PDFGenerally, carcinoma of the gallbladder is an extremely unusual neoplasm, however, high incidence rates have been reported in certain parts of the world. The role of certain factors such as genetic susceptibility, lifestyle and infections of gallbladder in causing carcinogenesis is still not clearly understood. Due to its early vague symptoms and lack of serosa in the gallbladder to slow its spread, gallbladder carcinoma typically presents at an advanced stage with a five-year survival rate of less than 5%. Pseudopancreatic cyst is an uncommon but not a rare complication of acute pancreatitis and injury to the pancreas. However, it rarely presents with carcinoma of gallbladder. We present here an unusual case of gallbladder carcinoma with pseudopancreatic cyst in a 58-year old male

Improving Exercises of Reflective Thinking and Practice in Teacher Education at a State University in USA
No full textReflective practice since its inception became a significant part of teacher preparation and professional development programs around the world. Teachers like any other professionals are expected to review and reflect upon their current practices for improving their future performance. This paper explores the current exercises of reflective thinking and practice within an undergraduate teacher preparation program at a state university in USA. The findings are based upon descriptive and narrative data analysis of interviews conducted with two professors and six course and field instructors. After open coding with question oriented analysis, the author has reduced the analysis to current practices and suggestions for improvement in relation to the related literature.

The author recorded these interviews for her Ethnochoreology Masters Arts Practice thesis at the University of Limerick in 2021 (remote during COVID – living in France). The interviewees gave informed consent to recording and archival storage and diffusion. Originally uploaded and linked from the author’s personal Google drive in 2021, this Nakala upload is an archival upgrade. Research Europe publication criteria and securing the recordings in an affordable (free) and safe server are the main benefits of moving to Nakala from G-drive. DECODENOIR.ORG audio now citable in Nakala makes data more accessible to the academics, dance communities and the general public who are the intended audience.
