Generation of feasible integer solutions on a massively parallel computer using the feasibility pump
Utku Koç (MEF Author)We present an approach to parallelize generation of feasible mixed integer solutions of mixed integer linear programs in distributed memory high performance computing environments. This approach combines a parallel framework with feasibility pump (FP) as the rounding heuristic. It runs multiple FP instances with different starting solutions concurrently, while allowing them to share information. Our computational results suggest that the improvement resulting from parallelization using our approach is statistically significant. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abuse of the right to access ICSID arbitration
In the last decade, the Tribunals of the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) have discussed the adoption of a new standard in assessing the jurisdictional requirements of the Convention on the Settlement of Investment Disputes between States and Nationals of Other States, in order to preserve the integrity of their own process, by introducing the general principle of the abuse of rights into the initiation of the ICSID arbitration process. This well-known principle of international law, along with other similar concepts such as good faith and abuse of process, has begun to play an important role at the jurisdictional stage of ICSID proceedings, largely due to the widely adopted practice of treaty shopping by investors who restructure their investments in order to gain access to the jurisdiction of ICSID tribunals. Although the exact parameters of the principle are not yet established, the practices of ICSID tribunals provide a useful road map for future cases. © The Author 2014. Unlocking the insights: data-analytic examinations of social signals in organizational practices
Using analytics to understand social data is an emerging research field across different academic disciplines including Information Systems. Information Systems (IS) discipline places the social media-related research at the intersection of people, organizations, and technology. While the recent focus of design science utilizes advanced data mining methods to develop decision-aiding frameworks and extend organizational boundaries by designing novel artifacts; the behavioral focus develops and tests theories that elucidate behaviors at the individual or organizational levels. This thesis comprises three essays aiming to contribute to IS research by both leveraging from the two foundational principles of IS -behavioral science and design science- and applying advanced analytics to further understand the executive, stakeholder, and brand relations. These implementations allow us to elegantly capture several important features of the social signals that have been employed in online networking platforms. In the first two chapters, social signals are examined as internal and external associations of the executives’ career outcomes. The third chapter investigates the social signals from brands’ perspectives. While the first two chapters highlight and examine the relationships of several constructs, the main emphasis of the third chapter lies on designing a valuable information systems tool to complement the theoretical studies and enhance the practical implementations.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2019-05-01The student, Utku Pamuksuz, accepted the attached license on 2017-04-20 at 11:08.The student, Utku Pamuksuz, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2017-04-20 at 11:19.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2017-04-21 at 09:23.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #10931 on 2017-08-10 at 14:32:20Made available in DSpace on 2017-08-10T19:52:18Z (GMT). Bir çağdaş anlatım dili olarak romanda görsellik: ‘’Araba Sevdası’ndan Yüksek Topuklar’a’’
Soyadı:Ayşegül Utku Günaydın letişim Bilimleri letişim Bilimleri Prof. Dr. Nurçay Türkoğlu Tez Türü ve Tarihi:Yüksek Lisans - Temmuz 2003 Roman, İmge, GörsellikBİR ÇAĞDAŞ ANLATIM DİLİ OLARAK ROMANDA GÖRSELLİK: ARABA SEVDASI'NDAN YÜKSEK TOPUKLAR'A Çağımızda, görsel kültürün ve görselliğin etkilerini her alanda görmekteyiz. Bu da Türk edebiyatının ilk roman ürünlerinin verildiği ve çağdaş edebiyata geçiş süreçlerinin yaşandığı Tanzimat edebiyatının en önemli eserlerinden Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem'in Araba Sevdası romanı ile, 2000'li yıllarda yazılmış ve popülerlik kazanmış Murathan Mungan'ın Yüksek Topuklar adlı romanı arasındaki anlatım dilinin görselliğinin ne boyutlarda değiştiğinin bir göstergesi olacaktır Name and Surname:Ayşegül Utku Günaydın Field:Communication Science Programme:Communication Science Supervisor:Proffessor Nurçay Türkoğlu Degree Awarded and Date:Master - July 2003 Novel, İmage, Visuality ABSTRACT THE VISUALITY IN THE NOVEL AS A CONTEMPORARY EXPRESSION LANGUAGE (METHOD): FROM ARABA SEVDASI TO YÜKSEK TOPUKLAR The impacts of visual culture and visuality can be seen in almost every aspect of life. The technological innovations in the field of communication play a crucial role in this fact. The image and the visual world has been effecting all kinds of art, social life and culture. On the other hand literature makes use of visuality in the process of imagination through the use of writing. The novel is a literary product which focuses on human being and depends on imagination. In this study the visuality in the novel is examined through the analysis of the recreation of changing behaviors and images by the author together with the reader's perception and augmentation process. For this purpose two novels from two different periods has been selected, namely Araba Sevdası by Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem and Yüksek Topuklar by Murathan Mungan. The first one is counted for being one of the earliest works in the Turkish Literature representing both the characteristics of the transition to the contemporary literature and the Tanzimat period. The latter is dating from 2000's and a popular one which constitutes a good example for how the dimension of the visuality of the expression language (method) has changed
AUTHOR IDENTIFICATION IN SHORT TEXTS: A METHODOLOGICAL PROPOSAL FOR TWITTER
Determining a given text’s author and finding the texts whose authors are the same, through several texts is one of the most important application fields of forensic linguistics. Most of the studies, which are done up to the present, were conducted along with a long corpus, which also consists of relatively more linguistic data such as newspaper articles. Thus, they don’t suggest a method in terms of author identification of short texts. Yet, in forensic linguistic studies, the entreated texts are quite short. However, social media entries including the micro-blogs can be subject to criminal or law cases several times. Accordingly, there’s a need for some methods and aspects related to author identification. This study aims to suggest a method to determine authors by using grammar, punctuation, lexis and context features of texts, which were collected from the micro-blog named Twitter, with a special regard to its character constraint. The features, which are seen to be or may be distinctive, are shared and the methods, which mostly need to be formatted related to the corpus, are presented along with their general titles
Review of the literature on combined oral contraceptives and cancer
Millions of women have given preference to the use of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) since its introduction in the 1960s. Both oestrogens and progestogens can regulate proliferation and it is plausible these effects may contribute to carcinogenesis. We aimed to review the accumulated knowledge to date to appreciate the modifying effects combined oral contraceptives may have on carcinogenesis. Our methodology involved a review of the current published literature, paying attention to studies published in the last 20 years. It has been noted that the overall cancer odds do not change with the use of COCs. Increased risk for breast cancer with COC use is not consistently backed in the literature; the results range from no increase in risk to a 20%–30% elevation in risk, and the risk seems to be temporary, limited to recent or current regular COC use. Also, diagnosed breast cancer cases seem to be clinically advanced in ever-users compared to never-users. Data show that the ongoing and prolonged use of COCs may provide diminished risk for endometrial, colorectal and ovarian cancers. Although studies do not clearly support increased risk with COC use in high-risk groups, such as women with family history of cancer or BRCA carriers, local and international guidelines are available for clinical decision-making. For cervical cancer, COCs seem to enhance the risk with more than 5 years of use, and in many studies, this enhanced risk diminishes after discontinuation and restores to those of never-users within 10 years. The relationship between COC use and liver malignancy risk assessments has provided conflicting findings. Some studies have suggested that hormonal contraceptives may increase the risk of not only hepatocellular carcinoma but also intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Combined oral contraceptives are safe and effective and the effects are reversible. Patients who pursue family planning should be warned of possible carcinogenic outcomes, but it should also be explained that—in addition to sexual health advantages—preferring COCs may also decrease the risks of endometrial, colorectal and ovarian cancers
Determınıng Markers of Author Identıfıcatıon on Short Texts: A Forensıc Lınguıstıc Applıcatıon on Twıtter
According to the literature, identification and/or profiling of the author of a given text is one of the most popular questions addressed to forensic linguists. For this very reason, it could be stated that author identification studies are of particular importance in terms of forensic linguistics. Besides, such studies may either be performed individually or have a supplementary essence along with other several analyses. Despite all, author identification studies concerning Turkish texts have only recently received scientific attention and within this context, short texts have usually been disregarded. It is clear that there is a need for specific methods accounting for texts consisting limited linguistic data, with a special regard to correspondence on mobile phones and on social media posts. Most of the features that are employed in the author identification analyses of newspaper articles seem to be inadequate on social media posts or other instant messaging types since the latter sort of texts have considerably limited verbal content. This study aims to address to this necessity within the given context. First, a total of 1000 posts by 50 different authors from the micro-blog site Twitter have been examined as a sample of short texts and then, distinctive features have been established which are useful to distinguish the same and different authors. These features that are sorted out under titles “spelling and punctuation”, “lexis and context” and “others” have been worked out on a total of 198 single Twitter posts submitted by 60 different authors. Through 18 separate analyses that include different number of authors and posts, identification of the initially unknown authors have been attempted. Every single attempt resulted with a match and these matchups were all checked and confirmed. There hasn’t been any analysis resulted with indecision or misdetection. Findings seem to be significant for both constituting a methodology for author identification studies on short texts in Turkish, as well as for providing a basis for the advancement of the proposed method in the future.
Huge immature teratoma of the ovary with gliomatosis peritonei in childhood
Germ cell tumors account for less than 3% of all ovarian cancers. These tumors generally appear in childhood or in those under 30 years of age. Immature ovarian teratoma is the third most frequent germ cell tumor after dysgerminoma and endodermal sinus tumors. These tumors should be distinguished from mature teratomas. Discrimination of malignant and benign tumors depends on the presence of the neuroectodermal components, made up of neural and glial cells. Gliomatosis peritonei is the intraabdominal and particularly peritoneal and omental distribution of the neuroectodermal components, observed very rarely with immature teratoma. Mature teratoma, on the other hand, is even rarer. This report aims to discuss a case of immature teratoma completely filling the abdomen and concomitant omental distribution related gliomatosis peritonei in a 7-year-old child
