AWARENESS OF DIABETIC EYE DISEASES AMONG DIABETIC IN-PATIENTS AT KING ABDULAZIZ UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA
Background: Saudi Arabia is the second most common country affected by diabetes mellitus in the Middle East, and it is the seventh in the world. Approximately 10% of diabetic patients develop visual impairment and blindness due to ocular complications. These could be prevented by increasing awareness. Aim: To assess the awareness of diabetic eye disease among diabetic in-patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 241 diabetic in-patients attreated between 2014 and 2017 at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The data were collected through a telephone-based interview and analysis was performed using SPSS. The chi-square test was used to investigate the relationship between demographic data and awareness to diabetic eye disease. Results: A total of 241 patients were included in the analyses. Of these, 140 (58.1%) were males. Approximately 80.9% of the patients knew about diabetic eye disease. Patients with a higher educational level and economic status were more aware about diabetic eye diseaseA considerable proportion of the patients (79.7%) were aware that retinopathy could be caused by diabetes. Conversely, only 41.9% and 32.8% were aware that cataract and glaucoma could be caused by diabetes mellitus, respectively. Conclusion: Most patients were aware ofthe ophthalmologic complications of diabetes. Despite being aware of diabetic retinopathy, more than half of the patients didnot know that it was curable hence, more public health education is needed
Exploring the Relationship between Cerebral Palsy and Hip Dysplasia: Insights from the National Inpatient Sample
Background and Objective: Cerebral palsy (CP) significantly impacts quality of life globally. Hip dysplasia (HD) is a common musculoskeletal issue in CP patients. This study investigates the prevalence, risk factors, and impact of HD on CP patients using a large national database. Materials and Methods: Data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database (2016–2019) were used, identifying CP and HD diagnoses through ICD-10 codes. Baseline characteristics were tabulated. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses examined predictors of HD development in CP patients, presenting data as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Among 3,951,040 pediatric patients, 28,880 had CP (27,466 without HD, and 1414 with HD), and 3,922,160 did not have CP. CP significantly increased the likelihood of developing HD in univariate (OR = 35.03, 95% CI [33.01, 37.17], p < 0.0001) and multivariate (OR = 26.61, 95% CI [24.94, 28.40], p < 0.0001) analyses. Among patients with CP, race was significantly associated with HD, with ORs below 1 for all racial categories compared to Whites. Females had nearly twice the odds of HD compared to males (OR = 1.96, 95% CI [1.86, 2.05], p < 0.0001). Age was significantly associated with HD, with each additional year increasing the odds (OR = 1.03, 95% CI [1.026, 1.034], p < 0.0001). Individuals in the high 51st–75th income quartile had a 17% increase in the odds of HD (OR = 1.17, 95% CI [1.09, 1.25], p < 0.0001) compared to the low 1st–25th income quartile. Conclusions: This study reinforces the strong association between CP and HD, highlighting the need for further research and prospective studies to validate these findings
Assessment of the level of awareness about paediatric cataract among the general population of Jeddah
BackgroundCataract is an extremely serious cause of visual impairment in paediatric patients worldwide, with untreated cataract being the leading cause of blindness in children.AimsThe aim of the present study was to assess the level of awareness and knowledge about paediatric cataract among the general population of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.Methods This survey-based cross-sectional study was conducted between June and July 2018 and included a representative sample of the general population of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire included a set of questions pertaining to paediatric cataract knowledge and awareness. The gathered data were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21, and the results were acquired by Pearson’s chi square tests and frequency calculations.Results In total, 678 individuals, including 51.6per cent women and 48.4per cent men, participated in the survey. Approximately 39.7per cent participants did not know whether cataract can affect the paediatric population or not. Although the majority could not recognize the risk factors and symptoms of the disease, 75.2per cent realized that it is treatable. Surgical intervention was identified as the main treatment modality by 46.9per cent participants.ConclusionOur findings suggest that the general population of Jeddah has limited knowledge about paediatric cataract. Thus, educational campaigns and programs are necessary to increase public awareness. In addition, further studies on awareness about this condition should be considered in order to prevent serious eye complications in children
