Democratic Welfare State as Visualised by the Quaid-i-Azam

    No full text
The Quaid-i-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, is known more for his political achievements than for his socio-economic thought. Last two decades, however, have seen a continuous flow of books containing his speeches, statements, messages, interviews, discussions in pre-independence legislative bodies and addresses in the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan. Even a cursory look at this vast literature shows that he was not only concerned with the political aspect of sub-continent’s independence movement but also consistently expressed his views regarding the socio-economic uplift of masses in general and Muslim society in particular. These views in their bare essentials reflect a remarkable continuity of approach from the earlier days of his political career to the period he occupied the position of Governor General of Pakistan. Actually, he became more and more expressive and forthright as the prospects of Pakistan coming into existence became bright. When Pakistan finally appeared as a sovereign nation on the map of the world, he openly rejected the prevailing economic system as having failed to do justice between man and man and to eradicate friction from the international field.

Drought Resilience of Wheat Genotypes Through Microbial Biostimulants Under Water Deficit Regimes

    No full text
ABSTRACT Drought resilience strategies are needed to tackle the escalating issue of water scarcity and to sustain crop productivity under water deficit conditions. There is a gap in identifying the most effective consortium of microbial biostimulants and understanding the underlying physiological and antioxidant mechanisms involved in the drought resilience of wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) crop. To address this, three experiments were carried out in laboratory and wire house conditions to identify and optimise the response of drought‐tolerant microbial biostimulants for wheat genotypes. Three drought‐tolerant microbial biostimulants: Bacillus subtilis , Bacillus megaterium and Trichoderma harzianum were selected from a laboratory study. The two wheat genotypes: Dilkash‐2021 and Bakhar Star (drought tolerant and sensitive, respectively) were selected from a wire house experiment. Afterwards, the response of individual and consortium of selected drought‐tolerant microbial biostimulants was evaluated in drought‐tolerant and sensitive wheat genotypes under well‐watered and water deficit regimes. Results indicated that seed inoculation of drought‐tolerant genotype with the microbial consortium of Bacillus subtilis , Bacillus megaterium and Trichoderma harzianum significantly increased relative water contents (58%), stomatal conductance (39%), sub‐stomatal conductance (70%), water use efficiency (38%) and net leaf photosynthetic rate (34%) as compared with the un‐inoculated control under water deficit. Furthermore, a significant reduction in malondialdehyde concentration (36%) and an improvement in proline contents (77%), superoxide dismutase (82%) and peroxidase (51%) were observed with this microbial consortium under water deficit. Therefore, seed inoculation of drought‐tolerant wheat genotypes with the microbial consortium might be considered in formulating the best agricultural practices for alleviating the adverse effects of water deficit on the wheat crop

A Review of Milk Production in Pakistan with Particular Emphasis on Small-scale Producers

    No full text
The purpose of the study is to assess the economics of dairy farming in Pakistan and the prospects for improving the dairy income for small-scale producers, which currently form the backbone of the dairy industry. The document begins with a general overview of milk production in the country, followed by a detailed study of dairy farming in the province of Punjab, with a particular focus on the small-scale producers. Preliminary estimates of the margins in the formal and informal market for liquid milk are provided. The study applies a method of economic analysis developed by the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN) which is based on the concept of typical farms. Four farm types were selected to represent 'typical farms' in the province of Punjab: one farm with one and three, and two farms with ten dairy animals respectively, one of the latter located near the city of Lahore. Each farm is described in detail with assets, production costs, profits and other economic information presented both graphically and in the text. The study concludes that a sound intervention strategy to strengthen the position of the small scale dairy farms would focus simultaneously on at least three fronts: (1) lowering farm production costs, (2) increasing productivity and (3) promoting a "higher" farmers' share in the consumer milk prices. A more competitive milk marketing system designed to cater for the needs of small-scale dairy farmers would send strong positive signals for small farmers to mobilise their own resources and develop their operations.Livestock Production/Industries,

The exegesis of Tabatabaei and the Hermeneutics of Hirsch: a comparative study

    No full text
This thesis is a comparative study between Hermeneutics on the one hand and exegesis of the Holy Qur'an on the other. Its objective is to discover whether there are salient points of convergence between the two disciples, and whether issues germane to the Hermeneutical tradition in the West have been referred to and/or employed in Muslim works of Qur'an commentary. To this end, the works of one of the most prominent Shi'ite philosophers and exegetes. Allama Mohammad Hossein Tabataei, have been analysed and compared with the perspective and methodology of E D. Hirsch, one of the most important hermeneuticians in the Western World. Hirsch has been chosen since, in the opinion of the author, there is a considerable number of commonalities between the Hirschian approach to hermeneutics and the exegetical methodology of Tabatabaei and other Shi'ite Muslim interpreters of the Qur'an.. Hirsch, as an objectivist, along with a number of other Hermeneutical scholars, are critical of those who subscribe to philosophical Hermeneutics, such as Heideger and Gadimer. The same approach is taken in Tabatabaei's works, thus providing a strong rationale for an academic comparison of these two scholars. For this reason, this thesis attempts to study the theories of Tabatabaei and Hirsch in order to highlight the similarities and differences in their works. The central hypothesis is that while small differences in approach exist, there is much common ground, and that it is possible to use certain facets of Hirschian hermeneutics in the interpretation of the Qur'an, thus modernising some of the existing exegetical approaches employed by Shi'ite scholars.Since the aim of this thesis is to compare the interpretive works of Tabatabaei with those of Hirsch's, an introductory chapter has been dedicated to the study of the evolution of Shi'ite exegesis from the beginning to date. Tabatabaei's Al-Mizan has been chosen as the foremost work of Shi'ite exegesis in the modem period. Furthermore, a complete chapter has also been dedicated to Tabatabai's exegetical modus operandi as reflected in Al-Mizan, in order to arrive at a better understanding of his perspectives. This research arrives at the conclusion that philosophical Hermeneutics and Epistemology have opened new horizons on which we will always be dependent. Whatever interpretive theories with regards to the understanding of the text are accepted, or whatever the tendency as far as literary criticism is concerned, or whatever ideas are accepted in the arena of philosophy of human and social sciences, the discussion of the nature of understanding in general cannot be avoided. This does not mean that Hermeneutics is limited to these new theories. Rather, the opportunity always exists to introduce new interpretive theories in connection with the understanding of the text. It is indeed possible to study these discussions in detail in a separate sphere independent of the other branches of Islamic sciences and arrive at a number of stable principles in the interpretation of the text in Islamic research

Chief executive officers' characteristics and the internationalisation of small and medium-sized enterprises: a quantile regression approach

    No full text
Chief executive officers (CEOs) play a crucial role in the managerial decisions of firms. The objective of this study is to analyse the role of CEOs in the internationalisation of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises). Explicitly, the study investigates the impact of CEOs' demographic characteristics on the internationalisation of SMEs. Based on the theoretical perspective of the resource-based view, the upper echelons theory, and the information processing theory, the study assumes that CEOs' characteristics, including tenure, education, age and political connectedness, affect the international performance of SMEs. Applying a novel (quantile) regression technique on UK-based small and medium-sized enterprises for the period from 2005 to 2015, the study offers evidence of CEOs' political connections. Moreover, the results show that educational levels positively influence the internationalisation, while tenure and age negatively influence the internationalisation of SMEs
