Transverse momentum spectra and nuclear modification factors of charged particles in Xe–Xe collisions at sNN=5.44TeV
Transverse momentum (p(T)) spectra of charged particles at mid-pseudorapidity in Xe-Xe collisions at root s(NN) = 5.44 TeV measured with the ALICE apparatus at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. The kinematic range 0.15 show a remarkable similarity at p T > 10 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of the ratio of the average transverse momentum in Xe-Xe collisions over Pb-Pb collision at root s= 5.02 TeV is compared to hydrodynamical model calculations. Constraining the magnitude of the Chiral Magnetic Effect with Event Shape Engineering in Pb–Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV
In ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, the event-by-event variation of the elliptic flow v(2) reflects fluctuations in the shape of the initial state of the system. This allows to select events with the same centrality but different initial geometry. This selection technique, Event Shape Engineering, has been used in the analysis of charge-dependent two-and three-particle correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV. The two-particle correlator , calculated for different combinations of charges alpha and beta, is almost independent of v(2) (for a given centrality), while the three-particle correlator scales almost linearly both with the event v(2) and charged-particle pseudorapidity density. The charge dependence of the three-particle correlator is often interpreted as evidence for the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME), a parity violating effect of the strong interaction. However, its measured dependence on v(2) points to a large non-CME contribution to the correlator. Comparing the results with Monte Carlo calculations including a magnetic field due to the spectators, the upper limit of the CME signal contribution to the three-particle correlator in the 10-50% centrality interval is found to be 26-33% at 95% confidence level. Dielectron and heavy-quark production in inelastic and high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV
The measurement of dielectron production is presented as a function of invariant mass and transverse momentum (p(T)) at midrapidity (vertical bar ye vertical bar )/dy vertical bar(y=0) = 974 +/- 138 (stat.) +/- 140 (syst.) +/- 214(BR) mu b and d sigma(b (b) over bar)/dy vertical bar(y=0) = 79 +/- 14 (stat.) +/- 11 (syst.) +/- 5(BR) mu b using PYTHIA simulations and d sigma(c (c) over bar)/dy vertical bar(y=0) = 1417 +/- 184 (stat.) +/- 204 (syst.) +/- 312(BR) mu b and d sigma(b (b) over bar)/dy vertical bar(y=0) = 48 +/- 14 (stat.) +/- 7 (syst.) +/- 3(BR) mu b for POWHEG. These values, whose uncertainties are fully correlated between the two generators, are consistent with extrapolations from lower energies. The different results obtained with POWHEG and PYTHIA imply different kinematic correlations of the heavy-quark pairs in these two generators. Furthermore, comparisons of dielectron spectra in inelastic events and in events collected with a trigger on high charged-particle multiplicities are presented in various p(T) intervals. The differences are consistent with the already measured scaling of light-hadron and open-charm production at high charged-particle multiplicity as a function of p(T). Upper limits for the contribution of virtual direct photons are extracted at 90% confidence level and found to be in agreement with pQCD calculations. (C) 2018 The Author. Published by Elsevier B.V
Measurement of the inclusive J/ ψ polarization at forward rapidity in pp collisions at √s=8 TeV
We report on the measurement of the inclusive J/psi polarization parameters in pp collisions at a center of mass energy root s = 8 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.23 pb(-1) J/psi resonances are reconstructed in their di-muon decay channel in the rapidity interval 2.5 < y < 4.0 and over the transverse-momentum interval 2 < pT < 15 GeV/c. The three polarization parameters (lambda(theta), lambda(phi), lambda(theta phi)) are measured as a function of pT both in the helicity and Collins-Soper reference frames. The measured J/psi polarization parameters are found to be compatible with zero within uncertainties, contrary to expectations from all available predictions. The results are compared with the measurement in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV
Inclusive J/ψ production at forward and backward rapidity in p-Pb collisions at √sNN=8.16 TeV
Inclusive J/psi production is studied in p-Pb interactions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision root s(NN) = 8.16 TeV, using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The J/psi meson is reconstructed, via its decay to a muon pair, in the centreof-mass rapidity intervals 2.03 < Y-cms < 3.53 and -4.46 < Y-cms < -2.96, where positive and negative Y(cms )refer to the p-going and Pb-going direction, respectively. The transverse momentum coverage is PT < 20 GeV/c. In this paper, Y-cms- and P-T-differential cross sections for inclusive J/psi production are presented, and the corresponding nuclear modification factors R-pPb are shown. Forward results show a suppression of the J/psi yield with respect to pp collisions, concentrated in the region P-T less than or similar to 5 GeV/c. At backward rapidity no significant suppression is observed. The results are compared to previous measurements by ALICE in p-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV and to theoretical calculations. Finally, the ratios R-FB between forward- and backward-Y-cms R-pPb values are shown and discussed
Systematic studies of correlations between different order flow harmonics in Pb-Pb collisions at s NN =2.76 TeV
The correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of anisotropic flow harmonic amplitudes have been measured in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The results are reported in terms of multiparticle correlation observables dubbed symmetric cumulants. These observables are robust against biases originating from nonflow effects. The centrality dependence of correlations between the higher order harmonics (the quadrangular v(4) and pentagonal v(5) flow) and the lower order harmonics (the elliptic v(2) and triangular v(3) flow) is presented. The transverse momentum dependences of correlations between v(3) and v(2) and between v(4) and v(2) are also reported. The results are compared to calculations from viscous hydrodynamics and a multiphase transport (AMPT) model calculations. The comparisons to viscous hydrodynamic models demonstrate that the different order harmonic correlations respond differently to the initial conditions and the temperature dependence of the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density (eta/s). Asmall average value of eta/s is favored independent of the specific choice of initial conditions in the models. The calculations with the AMPT initial conditions yield results closest to the measurements. Correlations among the magnitudes of v(2), v(3), and v(4) show moderate p(T) dependence in midcentral collisions. This might be an indication of possible viscous corrections to the equilibrium distribution at hadronic freeze-out, which might help to understand the possible contribution of bulk viscosity in the hadronic phase of the system. Together with existing measurements of individual flow harmonics, the presented results provide further constraints on the initial conditions and the transport properties of the system produced in heavy-ion collisions
J /ψ Elliptic Flow in Pb-Pb Collisions at sNN =5.02 TeV
We report a precise measurement of the J/psi elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The J/psi mesons are reconstructed at midrapidity (|y| < 0.9) in the dielectron decay channel and at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4.0) in the dimuon channel, both down to zero transverse momentum. At forward rapidity, the elliptic flow v(2) of the J/psi is studied as a function of the transverse momentum and centrality. A positive v(2) is observed in the transverse momentum range 2<p(T)<8GeV/c in the three centrality classes studied and confirms with higher statistics our earlier results at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV in semicentral collisions. At midrapidity, the J/psi v(2) is investigated as a function of the transverse momentum in semicentral collisions and found to be in agreement with the measurements at forward rapidity. These results are compared to transport model calculations. The comparison supports the idea that at low p(T) the elliptic flow of the J/psi originates from the thermalization of charm quarks in the deconfined medium but suggests that additional mechanisms might be missing in the models
p-p, p-Lambda, and Lambda-Lambda correlations studied via femtoscopy in pp reactions at root s=7 TeV
We report on the first femtoscopic measurement of baryon pairs, such as p-p, p-Lambda, and Lambda-Lambda, measured by ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV. This study demonstrates the feasibility of such measurements in pp collisions at ultrarelativistic energies. The femtoscopy method is employed to constrain the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions, which are still rather poorly understood. A new method to evaluate the influence of residual correlations induced by the decays of resonances and experimental impurities is hereby presented. The p-p, p-Lambda, and Lambda-Lambda correlation functions were fitted simultaneously with the help of a new tool developed specifically for the femtoscopy analysis in small colliding systems: Correlation Analysis Tool using the Schrodinger equation (CATS). Within the assumption that in pp collisions the three particle pairs originate from a common source, its radius is found to be equal to r(0) = 1.125 +/- 0.018 (stat)(-0.035)(+0.058) (syst) fm. The sensitivity of the measured p-Lambda correlation is tested against different scattering parameters, which are defined by the interaction among the two particles, but the statistics is not sufficient yet to discriminate among different models. The measurement of the Lambda-Lambda correlation function constrains the phase space spanned by the effective range and scattering length of the strong interaction. Discrepancies between the measured scattering parameters and the resulting correlation functions at LHC and RHIC energies are discussed in the context of various models
Measurement of Z0-boson production at large rapidities in Pb–Pb collisions at sNN=5.02TeV
The production of Z(0) bosons at large rapidities in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV is reported. Z(0) candidates are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel (Z(0) -> mu(+) mu(-)), based on muons selected with pseudo-rapidity -4.0 20 GeV/c. The invariant yield and the nuclear modification factor, RAA, are presented as a function of rapidity and collision centrality. The value of R-AA for the 0-20% central Pb-Pb collisions is 0.67 +/- 0.11(stat.) +/- 0.03 (syst.) f 0.06(corr. syst.), exhibiting a deviation of 2.6 sigma from unity. The results are well-described by calculations that include nuclear modifications of the parton distribution functions, while the predictions using vacuum PDFs deviate from data by 2.3 sigma in the 0-90% centrality class and by 3 sigma in the 0-20% central collisions
Measuring KS0 K± interactions using Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV
We present the first ever measurements of femtoscopic correlations between the K0 S and K± particles. The analysis was performed on the data from Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV measured by the ALICE experiment. The observed femtoscopic correlations are consistent with final-state interactions proceeding via the a0(980) resonance. The extracted kaon source radius and correlation strength parameters for K0 SK− are found to be equal within the experimental uncertainties to those for K0 SK+. Comparing the results of the present study with those from published identical-kaon femtoscopic studies by ALICE, mass and coupling parameters for the a0 resonance are tested. Our results are also compatible with the interpretation of the a0 having a tetraquark structure instead of that of a diquark
