    River deltas are dynamic geomorphological features known for their immense natural resource potentials; they are hotspots of population concentration and form some of the most biodiverse environments when in pristine form. However, they also comprise some of the most vulnerable coastal environments, heavily threatened by anthropogenic activity and climatic changes. In response to current threats, some deltas are experiencing large-scale coastline retreat, flooding, saline intrusion, and depletion of the wetland ecosystems. Dealing with these threats requires an improved understanding of the dynamic interplay between multiple processes that govern delta evolution as well as deltas’ response to external disturbances. In this thesis, I aimed to deepen insight into the dynamic changes in coastal delta morphology in response to changes in key boundary conditions, specifically fluvial discharge, and waves. The thesis has focused on four research questions, using the Niger deltas as a case study: (i) What are the contemporary trends in the natural and anthropogenic factors governing river delta dynamics? (ii) What changes can we observe in the shoreline mobility of the Niger delta in recent decades? (iii) What has been the trends in recent fluvial discharge and wave regimes along the Niger delta, and might these trends be associated with the observed morphological changes? (iv) Is it possible to identify the relative efficacy of river flow vs waves in dictating delta evolution under changing climatic conditions with numerical simulation? The review of the dynamics and sustainability of river deltas established the importance of sediment supply and distribution as well as the impact of contemporary anthropogenic-induced processes and ongoing climatic changes on deltaic morphological evolution. The study also revealed that recent decadal shoreline dynamics along the Niger delta lacked any entrenched spatial and temporal patterns, leading to the suggestion that current anthropogenic impact on the delta is moderate. The effect of natural process dynamics on deltaic shoreline mobility could not be directly inferred notwithstanding the recent increasing trends in both fluvial inputs and wave energy intensity into the Niger delta. The novel numerical model developed in this thesis elucidated how the dynamic coupling between ocean waves and fluvial processes informs the longshore sediment flux, progradation, aggradation, and patterns of channel migration in coastal delta settings. Overall, this thesis has made significant advances in the understanding of morphological evolution of deltas significantly influenced by fluvial and marine processes at yearly to decadal timescales

    Spatial and temporal variations in shoreline changes of the Niger Delta during 1986–2019

    The purpose of this study was to analyse the shoreline movement of the Niger delta, specifically focusing on the spatial pattern of the delta’s shoreline behaviour during 1986–2019. We employed satellite data of medium spatial resolution (20–30 m) to delimit the delta shorelines representing specific time in order to determine the rates of the delta shoreline migration. Our results show that the delta shoreline has changed nearly in equal proportion between erosion (50.3%) and accretion (49.7%), at mean (maximum) rates of 3.9 m/yr. (26 m/yr.) of erosion, and 4.0 m/yr.(27 m/yr.) of accretion. Further analysis indicates that the highest shoreline migration is seaward (&gt;200 m) though the ratio of the shoreline distance in recession (54%) exceeds that which is in accretion. Our analysis did not reveal any entrenched spatial pattern of shoreline behaviour but rather highlights a random occurrence of hotspots in both shoreline erosion and accretion over spaceand time. We have also showed that by applying the statistical mean-removed shoreline approach, the overall trend of a delta shoreline movement can be vividly discriminated. In conclusion, since the Niger delta shoreline dynamics is most intense at the delta river mouths, we suggest this is likely due to the interaction between waves and river discharge in these locations.<br/

    AbstractLiterary language in African writing makes for interesting study because of the linguistic nuances and flavour of the indigenous African language of its author that finds creative expression in English. How language is used in dramatic communication is a subject of serious intellectual debate. This study, through the textual analysis of some play-texts, which are constructed on the didactic and eclectic nature of theatre and the society, is a reflection on the socio-dramatic transition of language use in the plays of Ola Rotimi. The discussion will identify, conceptualise and re-think some major forms, styles and patterns of language use in the plays of Ola Rotimi. Given the theatrical, dramatic, literary dividends and effectiveness of Rotimi’s works, this study concludes by calling on budding playwrights and dramatists in Africa to emulate/imitate/learn from re-thought language forms, styles and “linguistic possibilities” in the plays of Ola Rotimi as they experiment with language use in the African theatre.Keywords: African theatre, language use, Ola Rotimi, play directing, socio-dramatic, transitio

    Lo studio esplora l'impatto della drammaturgia classica in Africa, attraverso un momento paradigmatico: The Gods are not to Blame (Gli dei non vanno maledetti, 1969) di Emmanuel Gladstone Rotimi, riscrittura dell'Edipo re sofocleo. Attraverso la reinterpretazione di un testo canonico della cultura occidentale, l'autore ha cercato di presentare, rappresentare, definire ed esplorare la storia e l'identità del proprio paese, la Nigeria, e della propria etnia, gli Yoruba. Il mito greco viene ridiscusso all'interno di una cornice dualistica, contemporaneamente postcoloniale e indigena, che ne permea gli stratagemmi, lo stile e i contenuti, fondendosi in una sintesi di protesta e imitazione, in una mescolanza di rivolta e conciliazione. D’altronde, la storia del rapporto tra l’Europa e l’Africa è tragicamente segnata da episodi di sofferenza, oppressione e razzismo. L’analisi condotta si dispiega attraversa una serrata comparazione, a tratti filologica, tra i due drammi, nel tentativo di evidenziarne e motivarne analogie e incongruenze. Il risultato di questa meticolosa ricognizione critica ci conduce verso un prodotto ibrido che non mistifica o neglige la sacralità classica, ma ne divelte le porte del tempio in modo tale che al suo interno si crei lo spazio per altre forme di esperienza e nuovi timbri di voce.The study explores the impact of classical dramaturgy in Africa, through a paradigmatic moment: The Gods are not to Blame (1969) by Emmanuel Gladstone Rotimi, a rewriting of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex. Through the reinterpretation of a canonical text of Western culture, the author sought to present, represent, define and explore the history and identity of his own country, Nigeria, and of his own ethnic group, the Yoruba. The Greek myth is rediscussed within a dualistic framework, simultaneously postcolonial and indigenous, which permeates its stratagems, style and contents, merging in a synthesis of protest and imitation, in a mixture of revolt and conciliation. On the other hand, the history of the relationship between Europe and Africa is tragically marked by episodes of suffering, oppression and racism. The analysis conducted unfolds through a close comparison, at times philological, between the two dramas, in an attempt to highlight and motivate analogies and inconsistencies. The result of this meticulous critical reconnaissance leads us towards a hybrid product that does not mystify or neglect classical sacredness, but demolishes the doors of the temple in such a way that space is created inside for other forms of experience and new timbres of voice

    ENHANCEMENT OF DATA CENTRE POWER CONSUMPTION THROUGH A PREDICTIVE ALGORITHM

    Data Centres (DCs) are of paramount importance in the telecommunications industry to meet up with the rapid increase in the demand for telecommunication services. However, the cost of power consumption of a DC accounts for about 80% of the cost incurred in maintaining Data Centres. This situation is further exacerbated in a country like Nigeria where there is highly unstable power supply from the national grid. The unstable power supply leading to increase in the cost of maintaining a DC due to alternative sources of power supply required. Several research projects such as power consumption prediction model and energy consumption optimization have been carried out to reduce the power consumption of Data Centres. However, the existing works suffer from assumption that all the modular that are not carrying traffic will be on idle mode. This generates additional heat and requires a cooling system that consumes extra power compared to when it is completely off. Also, some of the techniques proposed in the literature lack an accurate prediction of the power consumption in Data Centres. This research therefore reduced DC power consumption through a predictive algorithm using Genetic Algorithm (GA) with Kalman Filter (KF) parameters. Data were collected from five different servers in Nigeria, named BSC 13, BSC 14, BSC 15, RNC 05 and RNC 06 using power analyser, clamp meter and thermometer. The historical assessment of data collected were carried out for the DC under study. Two years data (January to December of 2019 and 2020) were collected from the five servers. The data were recorded on an hourly basis for each 357 days in 2019 and 358 in 2020, to obtain a total of 8568 and 8592 samples respectively. All the hourly data measured, and the ones displayed by rectifier Human Machine Interface (HMI) were compared to obtain the percentage error and ascertain the integrity of the data. The data were pre-processed for consistency and the final data used for each year under study, consists of 8400 samples. The final data were divided and categorized into two Datasets. The first dataset was used to create a prediction model, while the second dataset was used for testing. The GA was used to obtain best KF parameters, afterwards KF was used to predict the future power consumption on hourly basis for each day of the week. The proposed model gave low power consumption with accurate prediction when compared with the existing models. Linear Power Consumption Prediction Model (LPCPM) and Adaptive Server Utilization Scheme (ASUS) were also utilized with the assumption that the idle servers are not energised when not required, the performances of these models using different metrics when compared to the existing models in literature demonstrates superiority in terms of cost, power consumption reduction and negligible prediction average absolute error of 0.0025 (0.25%) was obtained
