    The subject of this bachelor thesis is the life and work of the Korean writer Kang Kyǒng-ae, with a focus on her short prose. The aim of this thesis is an analysis of two works - Salt and Darkness - with attention to the context of the author's time. Nowadays, Kang Kyǒng-ae is considered a significant author of the 1930s and her works reflect the phenomenon of Korean emigrants in Manchuria. For a long time, leftist tendencies caused her prose to be neglected, which resulted in a considerably limited number of studies concerned with her work, in comparison to the number of studies about other writers. There are virtually no Czech studies of her work. The text of the thesis initially presents the timeframe of Kang's authorship and then analyzes select works of hers.     학위논문(박사) - 한국과학기술원 : 의과학대학원, 2009.2, [ vi, 104 p. ]The lymphatic vessel is a major conduit for immune cell transport, however, little is known on how lymphatic vessels regulate immune cell trafficking and how lymphatic vessels themselves respond to inflammation. Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) plays a central role in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation, but the role of TLR4 in lymphatic endothelial cells (LEC) is poorly understood. Here we found that LEC express high amounts of TLR4 in the intracellular region and that the TLR4 of LEC is the main mediator of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation by LPS. LPS-TLR4 signaling in LEC resulted in the production of various chemokines for chemotaxis of macrophage. Additionally, TLR4 in LEC actively contributed to the recruitment of macrophages to the draining lymphatic vessel. Furthermore, the macrophages that infiltrated into the lymphatic vessel induced lymphangiogenesis by secreting lymphangiogenic growth factors. These phenomena were largely attenuated not only in the mice defective in TLR4 signaling but also in the chimeric mice defective in TLR4 signaling that were recipients for bone marrow transplantation from normal TLR4 signaling mice. In conclusion, TLR4 in LEC plays an essential role in LPS-induced inflammatory lymphangiogenesis by chemotactic recruitment of macrophages.한국과학기술원 : 의과학대학원

    Study on Solar KANG Heating System for Cold Areas

    AbstractThe current rural traditional heated kang cannot meet people's increasing requirements of comfort and environmental protection. This paper propose solar kang heating system in cold regions. System performance and heating effect were analyzed. We selected two typical rooms. One was set in traditional kang, and the other one was solar Kang type. Using temperature recording instrument and 64 roads inspection instrument and other instruments, we test the indoor temperature and the kang surface temperature of two rooms. Solar kang thermal resistance, heat storage, heat dissipation and heating effect were analyzed and compared. The results of the study show this system have the smaller fluctuation, more comfort while alleviating the kang surface overheat or super-cooling problem. It satisfied the requirements of indoor thermal comfort. The warming rate is 5.17°C/h, and the cooling rate is 3.01°C/h. These are slower than traditional Huokang speed. It improved the heat storage capacity of kang body with surface heat dissipation 1237W. Average temperature of the solar kang heating room was improved 3.28°C. It gets the smaller indoor temperature fluctuation. PMV values are concentrated about -0.5, and this basically meet the requirements of the user comfort

    Potential role of Epstein-Barr virus in Sjögren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis.

    In the pathogenesis of Sjögren's syndrome (SS), a role for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been suggested because; (a) EBV is present in salivary gland epithelial cells of healthy individuals, and exaggerated immune responses against EBV could play a role in the destruction of salivary glands in SS; (b) SS salivary gland biopsies contain increased levels of EBV DNA compared to normal salivary glands, indicating viral reactivation and inability of lymphoid infiltrates to control EBV replication in patients with SS; and (c) salivary gland epithelial cells in patients with SS express high levels of HLA-DR antigens and may present EBV associated antigens to immune T cells in patients with SS. Therefore, SS may represent a situation where genetically predisposed individuals (i.e., HLA-DR3-DQA4-DQB2) have a persistent but ineffectual T cell immune response against EBV at its site of latency. In the case of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), evidence for a potential role of EBV includes the following: (a) EBV encoded proteins share antigenic and sequence similarity to proteins found in the synovial tissues. These crossreactive proteins include EBV protein gp110 (BALF-4) and the beta chain of HLA-DR4. Also, the human and mycobacterial 65 kDa heat shock proteins have a sequence similar to that of EBV encoded proteins; (b) patients with RA have increased frequency and levels of antibodies against specific epitopes on EBV encoded EBNA-1 (BKRF-1) and EBNA-3 (BERF-1) antigens; and (c) lymphocytes from patients with RA have decreased ability to limit outgrowth of autologous EBV infected lymphocytes, probably due to defects in release of interferon gamma

    Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by severe dryness of the eyes and mouth, resulting from lymphocytic infiltration of the lacrimal and salivary glands. SS may exist as a primary condition (primary SS, 1.SS) or as a secondary condition (2.SS) in association with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or progressive systemic sclerosis. In some 1.SS patients, there may be involvement of the extraglandular organs, including skin, kidney, liver, lung and nervous system. Furthermore, these patients may develop a lymphoproliferative syndrome that includes lymphadenopathy and increased risk of lymphoma. Among 14 non-Hodgkin's lymphomas that developed in SS patients, EBV DNA was detected in increased amounts in the tumor tissue of one patient. Characterization of this tumor DNA revealed: (a) polyclonal immunoglobulin gene rearrangements; (b) EBV DNA with an unusual restriction fragment length polymorphism pattern involving the Bam M fragment; and (c) EBV terminal repeat sequences suggestive of viral replication, similar to those reported in EBV lymphomas occurring in other immunocompromised individuals. Early recognition of this clinical problem may allow beneficial use of antiviral agents

    Energetics of cubic and hexagonal phases in Mn-doped GaN: First-principles pseudopotential calculations

    We perform first-principles pseudopotential calculations to study the influence of Mn doping on the stability of two polytypes, wurtzite and zinc-blende, in GaN. In Mn delta-doped GaN and GaMnN alloys, we find similar critical concentrations of the Mn ions for stabilizing the zinc-blende phase against the wurtzite phase. Using a slab geometry of hexagonal lattices, we find that it is energetically unfavorable to form inversion domains with Mn exposure, in contrast to Mg doping. At the initial stage of epitaxial growth, a stacking fault that leads to the cubic bonds can be generated with the Mn exposure to the Ga-polar surface. However, the influence of the Mn delta-doped layer on the formation of the cubic phase is only effective for GaN layers deposited up to two monolayers. We find that the Mn ions are energetically more stable on the growth front than in the bulk, indicating that these ions act as a surfactant. Thus it is possible to grow cubic GaN if the Mn ions are periodically supplied or diffuse out from the Mn delta-doped layer to the growth front during the growth process.
