Positive Changes After Trauma: Because of or Despite the Trauma

In the current study, I want to give respondents a more attractive choice than reporting PTG. I am going to ask people who have experienced a trauma whether they have experienced positive change since their most distressing event. But I will then follow-up by asking whether they experienced this positive change because of the event, or despite the event. The former would indicate PTG, the latter would indicate growth in spite of the distressing event, which would not be PTG

Hypothesis for Heros Journey - Exp

We hypothesize that participants randomly assigned to be primed with a heros journey story (via a short video of the hero's arc, followed by triavia questions that reinforce the character arc) will self-report higher scores on the PTGI (measure of PTG), in comparison to participants who are primed with either a non-heros journey story or anti-heros journey. This is based on the notion that cultural expectations contribute to over-reporting of PTG

In Boals, Jayawickreme, and Park (in press), they suggest that one reason respondent may report illusory posttraumatic growth (PTG) is cultural expectations. We believe popular movies that follow the heros journey storyline help perpetuate the cultural expectation that if you experience hardship, it is supposed to make you stronger. In this study, we are testing whether priming participants with the heros journey storyline will result in higher self-reports of PTG
