Methylene Blue (MB) Test Versus Contrast Study (CS) in the Detection of Anastomotic Leak Following Oesogephactomy: A Prospective Study of 58 Patients
Background: Drug refractory gastroparesis is a debilitating disorder associated with severe
nausea and vomiting, resulting in a negative impact on quality of life. High frequency gastric
electrical stimulation (GES) is a viable, alternative treatment with a reported success rate of
between 50 and 70%. This study looks at the factors affecting outcome that may help in
improved patient selection. Patients and Methods: Clinical data from 48 patients with severe,
intractable gastroparesis, (12 diabetic and 36 idiopathic) were studied. The median age of
the patient group was 36 years (range 15-80). There were 38 females (79%). GES was
inserted via an open technique in 30 cases (62%) and by conventional, or robotic assisted
laparoscopic technique, in 18 cases. A history of preoperative use of opioids for severe
abdominal pain was noted in 18 patients (37.5%). Outcome was measured by changes in
quality of life and severity of symptoms (QOL/SF-36 and TSS-total symptoms score). Fisher's
exact test was used to analyze the association between patient-related factors and outcomes.
Results: 36 out of 48 patients (76.6%) had significant improvement in TSS, especially in
nausea and vomiting (>80% reduction) and QOL after GES insertion at follow-up. There
was no significant, statistical difference between long-term outcomes in aetiology, age, sex
of the patient or surgical technique (p= n.s.). However, patients who were not on opiates
prior to surgery had significantly better long-term outcomes than those on opiates (p=
0.0018). Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that GES is effective in patients with drug
refractory gastroparesis. However, patients on opiates prior to surgery do less well following
GES. GES therefore, appears to be more effective in patients who have nausea and vomiting
as the predominant symptoms than those with abdominal pain

Aeroelastic Model for Design of Composite Propellers
A tightly coupled aeroelastic design code for composite propeller blades was developed, verified, and used to perform design sensitivity studies. The design code features a structural model that accounts for geometric nonlinearities through the application of a corotational framework, nonlinear responses to loads, and a cross-sectional modelling approach to accurately represent the detailed 3D blade structure as a reduced-order Timoshenko beam element model. Blade element momentum (BEM) theory was used to evaluate aerodynamic loads, which are mapped onto the structural mesh. The nonlinear aeroelastic analysis routine uses Newton’s method to converge on a solution, with analytical derivatives for all applied loads. Excellent agreement with other analysis methods was shown during verification studies for all developed models. During validation, performance trends obtained from BEM were consistent with experimental results, with a maximum error of 20% at operating conditions under consideration during this research. The use of either symmetric-unbalanced or symmetric-balanced laminates was considered during sensitivity studies. Small variations in performance compared to the rigid propeller were observed from blades constructed out of symmetric-balanced laminates, as the minimal amount of bend-twist and extension-shear coupling resulted in small twist deformations. Conversely, propellers constructed out of symmetric-unbalanced laminates were shown to yield a noticeable variation in thrust and power compared to the rigid propeller due to the presence of bend-twist and extension-shear coupling, which results in coupling between twist and blade axis deformations. The presence of an aerodynamic wash-out effect was also found to alleviate blade loads, resulting in a lower power requirement at a given thrust setting, and an opposite trend was observed in the presence of a wash-in effect. The proposed analysis framework may be applied towards more extensive design studies or optimization in future projects.Group SodjaFlight Performance and Propulsio
Team players to spiritual warriors: the images of the Jewish male in selected novels of Philip Roth
Countless scholarship has been written during the past forty years about the changing images of women throughout history. This research has been inspired by the woman’s liberation movement and the ever-changing roles of women in the family, workforce and political landscape. Less research has been conducted on the evolving images and ideals of masculinity in modern times. Not all images of masculinity are equal. Race, age and sexuality are variables affecting whether or not a man fits into the hegemonic-cultural ideal. Drawing upon the work of Harry Brod, Michael Kaufman, Dana Mihailescu, Anthony Rotundo, Sander Gilman and Eric Goldstein this paper will examine various images of masculinity created by author Philip Roth. By applying masculinities theories, as well as theories of otherness, to the fiction of Philip Roth it will be possible to observe patterns in Roth’s father/son and man/woman relationships in his novels. This research demonstrates that Roth utilizes evolving images of masculinity in order to address issues of the Jewish otherness and assimilation in his work. This project drew upon readings and research taken from three MALS graduate courses: Family in American Literature, Modern Jewish History and an Independent Study (which focused on the work of Saul Bellow and Philip Roth).M.A.L.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Amy Marie Lope
Perceptions of technology and technology education in sixth grade students
Plan BBecause female enrollment in Technology Education dropped off so markedly after the initial required sixth-grade class at Kennedy Middle School, the researcher sought to measure the differences in how boys and girls in that age group perceive the course and technology in general. The review of literature showed that gender issues have been a major part of educational research in the 1990s. Despite the fact that the research has had inconsistent results regarding boys’ and girls’ class room performance and does not definitively show which sex is at a greater disadvantage, Technology Education is the one subject area that has shown a definite pattern of greater male interest and success. The students' perceptions were measured using an instrument that was developed for a previous study. The 29 question instrument used a four-point scale to measure students' perceptions of the word technology, overall interest level and perception of the course content. The results were analyzed by the author and presented in bar graph form based on the mean score of each question along with a discussion. Recommendations were made to increase female interest and overall student interest in the sixth grade Technology Education classes offered at Kennedy Middle School and for the discipline of Technology Education in general
