The present work contributes to a thorough studying of the professor as a reader and how his reading habits are formed

Roman Fort at Cape Aj-Todor (Charax) and its Surroundings. A New Look at Old Discoveries

    No full text
Despite many years of research at the site, the Roman fort at Cape Aj-Todor near Yalta remains relatively poorly studied. A better understanding of the discoveries made at the site can be reached by comparing them with the results of the excavations conducted in another fort also located in Crimea – at Balaklava- Kadykovka. This text is an attempt at gathering together all the published information about the discoveries made at Cape Aj-Todor. The comparison of the research results from both sites has enabled establishing numerous similarities between them. Both forts functioned simultaneously, and their architectural remains can be qualified to identically dated phases. The final effect of the analysis undertaken by the author is a more complete plan of the fort at Cape Aj-Todor along with its surroundings, processed in a new graphic formula.Oskar Kubra

In this review, the author analyzes poetic collections of Todor Manojlovic, (The Rhythms 1922), Bonfires and The Tale of Actaeon (1928) and The Poems of My Counterpart (1958)), as well as his posthumous collections of essays (The Basics and the Development of Contemporary Poetry and The New Poetry Book Fair ) and his numerous art critiques. Poetic and essayistic work of Todor Manojlovic evolves from his communication with most interesting European cultural movements and philosophical systems at the turn of the XIX and XX centuries. The review enlights Todor Manojlovic’s contribution to the revival of contemporary Serbian poetry that is mainly brought into connection with the Corfu Almanac – a literary addition to the Serbian Papers (1917-1918). Having taken part in the work of the Group of Artists and Literary Community – Alpha – Manojlovic actively participated in the organization and introduction of literary and artistic life in Belgrade after the First World War. He advocated for autonomy of poetic creation and introduction of free verse (vers libre). He also advocated for a poet’s right to inspiration which he considered to be a mixture of sense and intuition. In the spirit of Expressionism, he ascribed cosmic dimensions to poetry, and sought infinity in it. Reverting to the myth Todor Manojlovic depersonalized his poetic expression and departed from the poetic subject itself. The key determinant of his poetry is autoreference as well as his tendency to universalize poetic expression..

Todor Popov: A Historiography and A Conductor\u27s Analysis of His Choral Cycles

    No full text
The purpose of this document is to introduce the choral community of the United States to the choral music of one of Bulgaria\u27s most celebrated composers of the twentieth century, Todor Popov, through his choral cycles. The author reviewed English and Bulgarian sources on the composer, interviewed his daughter, and analyzed the two choral cycles composed by Popov: Sofia and Esenni Motivi. Included are a brief history of Bulgarian choral music, a biography of Popov, an overview of his choral music, and a conductor\u27s analysis of both choral cycle

    On compact uniformly recurrent subgroups

    No full text
Let a group Γ\Gamma act on a paracompact, locally compact, Hausdorff space MM by homeomorphisms and let 2M2^M denote the set of closed subsets of MM. We endow 2M2^M with the Chabauty topology, which is compact and admits a natural Γ\Gamma-action by homeomorphisms. We show that for every minimal Γ\Gamma-invariant closed subset Y\mathcal Y of 2M2^M consisting of compact sets, the union YM\bigcup \mathcal{Y}\subset M has compact closure. As an application, we deduce that every compact uniformly recurrent subgroup of a locally compact group is contained in a compact normal subgroup. This generalizes a result of U\v{s}akov on compact subgroups whose normalizer is compact.Comment: Todor Tsankov added as author, statements generalized, proofs shortened. 10 page

Experimental evidence for the truth conditional contribution and shifting information status of appositives

    No full text
Appositive constructions (My friend Sophie, (who is) a classical violinist, performed a piece by Mozart) have stood at the center of debates concerning the range of possible meanings, and more specifically the status of not-at-issue entailments. However, it remains an open question what precisely their semantic and pragmatic contribution is to the sentence in which they appear. Here, we address this question head on experimentally. We first investigate the information status of appositives and find that while nominal appositives (e.g. a classical violinist) and sentence-medial appositive relative clauses (e.g. who is a classical violinist) are largely not at issue, sentence-final appositive relative clauses can become at issue, as witnessed in their becoming the target of a direct rejection and being associated with subsequent questions. We then investigate the truth conditional contribution of appositives to sentences in which they appear, and find that whenever an appositive is false, participants judge the entire sentence False. Reaction times complement truth value ratings to demonstrate that this decision is largely automatic. We discuss possible reasons for the difference among appositive types and sentential positions, and propose that the pattern of results we observe and the strong similarity with conjunction can best be accounted for in a unidimensional semantics which treats appositives as dynamic conjuncts but which also relates linguistic form to the timing of making assertions in discourse.Peer reviewe
