Adolf Portmann, La forme animale
Immaginazione e biologia in Adolf Portmann
Three Dimensions of Living Forms – brief look into parallels between Adolf Portmann and C.G. Jung
This article shows correlation between two prominent thinkers of the 20th century, a biologist Adolf Portmann and a psychiatrist C.G. Jung. It shows a traditional problem of the biology and science in general, i.e. understanding its subject through a prism of function, regardless its meaning. Adolf Portmann, Swiss biologist and anthropologist, refers to many examples from the animal kingdom proving that function as an interpretative principle is not fully applicable. Portmann, similarly to Jung, distinguishes three primary levels of his subject, each of them has their own aims and values. At the same time, he emphasises that each of these levels can be comprehended only when regarded as a unity
Adolf Portmann: the expressive function of technique
This essay focuses on the topic of technique in the thought of the well-known biologist,
zoologist and anthropologist Adolf Portmann (1897-1982). First of all I’ll try to
understand the biological and anthropological roots, that make a naturally-artificial
(namely technical) being of a man. Then I’ll examine what kind of role and weight
Portmann assignes to the technique, underlining risks and chances, closely linked to it,
and showing the essentially expressive and self-expressive function of it. Finally I’ll
specify the relationship between the development of technique in our society and the loss
of the primary world: the aesthetic world of imagination

The Mimicry of Coral Snakes and King Snakes and the Approaches of Adolf Portmann
The problem of the supposedly mimetic relationship between some species of king snakes and coral snakes is rather scattered in literature and opinions on it vary greatly. In this work, I focus on summarizing and generalizing the existing pieces of knowledge about the colouration of these snakes and its consequences for evolutionary biology - neodarwinistic and especially portmannistic. In other words, natural selection does not solve all the questions and in this case in particular, it is obvious that mimesis interests not only biologists, but also mathematicians, chemists, physicists and philosophers. All of these are trying to find the answer to whether mimesis in these snakes is actually occurring and what would be the purpose of such colouration if it is not. Adolf Portmann is very clear on this subject: organisms show their inner properties on the outside as a means to self-present. The specific appearance is not determined and it does not have to have any adaptive value at all

This essay introduces the fundamental intuition of Adolf Portmann (1897-1982), notably from his book Die Tiergestalt (Animal Forms and Patterns). His theory, as novel as it is simple, is the following: an animal’s form is its self-representation. What the Swiss naturalist demonstrates scientifically, his most authoritative commentator today, Jacques Dewitte, interprets philosophically. We, in turn, offer a philosophical re-reading, focussing on the mystical or epiphanic development of a being, and this development basing itself on love as inner self-fulfilment. Portmann thus proposes a cosmology where beauty, giving, freedom and form take precedence over sheer chance, minor struggle, simple necessity (utility) and mere matter
