    Selig Adler was born in Baltimore, Maryland on Janury 22, 1909. He graduated from the University of Buffalo in 1931. Selig Adler received his Master’s in 1932 and his Doctorate in 1934 both from the University of Illinois. In 1938, Dr. Selig Adler joined the history faculty of SUNY University at Buffalo. He became a full professor in 1952. In 1958, Dr. Adler was named the Samuel Paul Capen Professor of History, he retained the title until he retired in 1980. In 1975, he was named a State University of New York “Distinguished Service Professor.” Dr. Adler wrote several scholarly publications including The Isolationist Impulse (1957) and The Uncertain Giant (1965). He was the co-author with Thomas E. Connolly on a comprehensive history of the Jewish community in Buffalo titled From Ararat to Suburbia. In 1980, Dr. Adler became Archivist of the Jewish Federation of Greater Buffalo. Their archives are now named after him and were located in the E. H. Butler Library at SUNY Buffalo State until their transfer to the SUNY University at Buffalo, Archive & Manuscript Collection.
