Post-lobotomy epilepsy illustrated by the story of Ellinor Hamsun, the daughter of the famous Norwegian author Knut Hamsun

    No full text
In Scandinavia, at least 11.500 people were lobotomized in the period 1939–1983. Beside grave personality changes, the surgery caused epilepsy in 10–35% of the patients. Moreover, many died due to perioperative bleedings, convulsive status epilepticus or SUDEP. Most of the stories of these people are anonymous and their post-lobotomy lives are scarcely documented. If it was not for the fact that Ellinor Hamsun (1916–1987) was the daughter of the famous Nobel Prize winning Norwegian author Knut Hamsun, her lobotomy story and the subsequent iatrogenic epilepsy would probably have remained unknown

Perceived ability and actual recognition accuracy for unfamiliar and famous faces

In forensic person recognition tasks, mistakes in the identification of unfamiliar faces occur frequently. This study explored whether these errors might arise because observers are poor at judging their ability to recognize unfamiliar faces, and also whether they might conflate the recognition of familiar and unfamiliar faces. Across two experiments, we found that observers could predict their ability to recognize famous but not unfamiliar faces. Moreover, observers seemed to partially conflate these abilities by adjusting ability judgements for famous faces after a test of unfamiliar face recognition (Experiment 1) and vice versa (Experiment 2). These findings suggest that observers have limited insight into their ability to identify unfamiliar faces. These experiments also show that judgements of recognition abilities are malleable and can generalize across different face categories

The manuscript under review "Al-Qawl Al-Mustehsan fi Fakhar-ul-Hasan" is basically an extended and comprehensive version of "Risala Fakhar-ul-Hasan". The mentioned treatise "Risala Fakhar-ul-Hasan" is written by Maulana Muhaddith Shah Fakhruddin Dehlvi (R.A). It is a detailed research with reference to the knowledge of hadith and the names of narrators (Asma-ur-Rijal). The subject of this treatise (Risala) is an answer to a famous objection raised by Hazrat Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlvi (R.A). While objecting, Hazrat Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Dehlvi (R.A) raised the point that Hazrat Hasan Basri's (R.A) narration from Hazrat Ali (R.A) is not connected (Muttasil) but transmitted (Mursal). The author of this treatise (Risalah) has proved with arguments and proofs that Hazrat Ali's (R.A) hadith narrated by Hazrat Hasan Basri (R.A), is not transmitted (Mursal) but connected (Muttasil). Allama Shah Fakhruddin Dehlvi's (R.A) stance has been further strengthened by Allama Hasan-ul-Zaman (R.A), who has supported it by adding more arguments in his Sharah "Al-Qawl Al-Mustehsan fi Fakhar-ul-Hasan"

This article delves into the assertion of identity in David Mamet’s famous play American Buffalo. Mamet has revealed a rich variety of possible variations of identity in his creative opus, not only in the field of drama and theatre but also in the film, through the portrayal of a variety of different characters and situations. The identity will be discussed in his play as a unique cultural text outside of which there is nothing. America, its myths and contemporary cultural industry, its class, racial, and gender conflicts, and the author establish a mutual set of influences that help characters formulate their identities. By using Stuart Hall’s idea of identity in flux, this qualitative research explores the effects of industrialization on psychology, the concept of success of the people, and their identity in general. The change from ‘Who am I’ to ‘What do I have’ is the concern of the American people in this post-modern era so it has been given special focus. To some extent, the identity of the characters, if it means material success in his plays, is linked with the American Dream. The research also aims at the means i.e. language, lies, maltreatment, double-crossing, and cheating, the Mametian characters adopt to formulate their identity. The analysis shows that if identity means material success, they never succeed in making their identity. They keep on making, remaking, and re-remaking their identity proving that identity in the world of Mamet is in flux

“London ki Ek Raat”is a famous novel by Sajjad Zaheer. In this novel, he has thoroughly reviewed the poor patriotism of the people of India. In this novel, the elements of post-colonialism have been reviewed. Creation relates differently to a creator. I think it is not fair to deny the author. The characters contribute according to the author's intention and move the story till the end. The feelings and emotions of the audience and viewers come out as the feelings and emotions of the characters and the pain and difficulty of the character becomes the difficulty of the reader and he feels sympathy for him. Even in "London Ki Ek Raat" where five, six stories are going on simultaneously. The purpose of Sajjad Zaheer himself to write this novelette is a different story, as every writer has a specific mindset. In the same way, those goals also enter into the creation even if the creator does not want it, and their reflections can be mixed up. Sajjad Zaheer has also given the most suitable role to the characters in the background and foreground of the world and the subcontinent in "London Ki Ek Raat
