The complicated lives of Nigerian immigrants in South Africa
A research report submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts (in Journalism and Media Studies), Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, 2021This thesis investigates the motivation of Nigerian migration to South Africa. The thesis explores the diverse experiences of Nigerian immigrants and what role class plays. And it explains why some refuse to return to Nigeria despite the obstacles they face. It investigates the causes of xenophobia and explains the stereotypes that have earned Nigerians an unfair reputation. South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994 was a moment of optimism. Nigeria was experiencing economic and political turmoil at the time. The lure of economic opportunities has led some 30,000 Nigerians to South Africa. Some are middle class or higher, working as doctors and academics. Some are undocumented migrants navigating a complex situation, sometimes on the receiving end of xenophobic violence. Shops have been looted or razed; some have died. This thesis is divided into two parts: a longform article titled “The complicated lives of Nigerian immigrants in South Africa” based on information garnered through interviews with subjects some of whom are identified with pseudonyms, academic research and media reports. The article contains some elements of my own experience as a Nigerian student in South Africa. The second part is the academic method document that underpins the projectC
Religious experience and women leadership in Nigerian Islam: a case study of Alhaja Sheidat Mujidat Adeoye
This paper examines the status and role of women in Nigerian Islam, with the case study of Alhaja Sheidat Mujidat Adeoye, the founder and leader of the Fadillullah Muslim Mission, Osogbo, Nigeria. It discusses religious experience of Sheidat Mujidat Adeoye which gave an impetus to the founding of her movement as this has not only changed the nature and form of Nigerian Islam, but it has also introduced a new expression into the tradition, thus causing an alteration in religious stereotypes within a religiously pluralistic community. The study adopts a multi-disciplinary approach of anthropology, phenomenology and hermeneutics. The significance of this study lies in the tremendous and imposing prominence and huge patronage of Sheidat Adeoye, both by the people of Osogbo and the numerous visitors from several parts of Nigeria. This paper examines the uniqueness of the practices of Adeoye vis-a-vis the religious experience that gave birth to her movement. It investigates her activities and practices, her acceptance within the Muslim religious and Yoruba cultural patriarchal community, and public responses to her movement. The paper assesses the relevance of the movement as an Islamic group in religio-cultural and inter-religious contexts
Towards a Culturally Sensitive Psychiatry: Lessons from Thomas Adeoye Lambo
Thomas Adeoye Lambo (1923 – 2004), a Yoruba Nigerian psychiatrist who received his training in London, initiated a culturally responsive psychiatric treatment in Aro village of Abeokuta, Southwestern Nigeria, in 1954. All through his career, Lambo worked to harness traditional socio-cultural resources for the treatment of mental illness and incorporate them into his medical work. This thesis explores Lambo's understanding of various Nigerian or on broader scale, African religious beliefs regarding mental illness and how they influenced his clinical practice in Aro village. It considers Lambo’s legacies and asks how his works might inform contemporary approaches to addressing mental illness concerns within present day Africa.Master of Arts (MA)Religious Studie
Methyl Methacrylate Production Processes: A Comparative Analysis of Alternatives Using the Life Cycle Assessment Methodology
Green chemistry is part of the chemical industry’s response to calls for improved environmental responsibility. It is also one of the industry’s several paths to redemption from its erstwhile infamous reputation as one of the most polluting sectors. We studied the impacts of implementing some of these principles on the production of methyl methacrylate (MMA), the monomer of PMMA popularly known as acrylic glass. This study used life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology to compare the potential environmental impacts of three different approaches to the production of MMA. Two of these are established industrial pathways: the acetocyanohydrin process (ACH-MMA) and the Alpha Lucite process (AL-MMA), which represent the conventional and a fastrising industrial route, respectively, while the third, the in situ formaldehyde process (inFAL-MMA) is a lab-based process. The scenarios were evaluated using cumulative energy demand (CED) and the ReCiPe 2016 impact assessment methods. The results obtained highlighted some hotspots that can benefit from process improvements and careful material and energy source selection. It also underscored that AL-MMA can record significant improvements in environmental performance by reducing the overall resource intensity of the process. inFAL-MMA synthesis was adjudged to be the most evolved of the three alternatives with respect to green chemistry principles; hence, the study sought to investigate possible environmental gains attributable to this. Some limitations of the
methodology uncovered during the study necessitated the use of an additional tool for further assessment of the potential risk. Thus, the GREEN MOTION was adopted to examine this relationship. Overall, the study established hotspots and areas for process improvements in the scenarios examined. It also confirmed the importance of different factors like data quality, degree of process optimization, energy source, and others on the results that can be obtained in a LCA

Political Configuration in the Dramaturgy of AbdulRasheed Adeoye
Colonial and postcolonial African dramaturgy was influenced by the politics of the society in which they were created. They reflected the political upheavals, corruption, socio‐political decadence and laxity portrayed by political leaders. In fact, these dramas such as the works of the radical Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, Wole Soyinka, Femi Osofisan, Bode Sowande, Sam Ukala, and Benedict Binebai amongst others were/are political constructs. However, one postmodern dramaturge who has fully explored the social and the political in his works in theory and praxis, is AbdulRasheed Adeoye. The authenticity of his theatre does not only stem from the political consciousness of his creative works, but also, his crystallization of a dramatic theory, he termed Neoalienation theory. How unique is this theory, and how relevant are the themes and content of his works to the political situation of present‐day Nigeria? To this end, this study critically investigates the poetics of politics in the dramaturgy of AbdulRasheed Adeoye. It further examines Adeoye’s neoalienation theory, in consonance with Bertolt Brecht’s Epic Theatre, and the political configurations of Adeoye’s dramaturgy
