Vascular Supply of the Cerebral Cortex is Specialized for Cell Layers but Not Columns.
The vascular supply to layers and columns was compared in macaque primary visual cortex (V1) by labeling red blood cells via their endogenous peroxidase activity. Alternate sections were processed for cytochrome oxidase to reveal "patches" or "blobs," which anchor the interdigitated column systems of striate cortex. More densely populated cell layers received the most profuse blood supply. In the superficial layers the blood supply was organized into microvascular lobules, consisting of a central venule surrounded by arterioles. Each vessel was identified as an arteriole or venule by matching it with the penetration site where it entered the cortex from a parent arteriole or venule in the pial circulation. Although microvascular lobules and cytochrome oxidase patches had a similar periodicity, they bore no mutual relationship. The size and density of penetrating arterioles and venules did not differ between patches and interpatches. The red blood cell labeling in patches and interpatches was equal. Moreover, patches and interpatches were supplied by an anastomotic pial arteriole system, with no segregation of blood supply to the two compartments. Often a focal constriction was present at the origin of pial arterial branches, indicating that local control of cortical perfusion may be accomplished by vascular sphincters
Computing the homology of Koszul complexes
Let R be a commutative ring and I an ideal in R which is locally generated by a regular sequence of length d. Then, each projective R/I-module V has an R-projective resolution P. of length d. In this paper, we compute the homology of the n-th Koszul complex associated with the homomorphism P_1 --> P_0 for all n, if d = 1. This computation yields a new proof of the classical Adams- Riemann-Roch formula for regular closed immersions which does not use the deformation to the normal cone any longer. Furthermore, if d = 2, we compute the homology of the complex N Sym^2 K(P.) where K and N denote the functors occurring in the Dold-Kan correspondence

Utilising Deep Learning Models for the Surface Registration Problem in HoloNav
Surface Registration is a registration problem that handles the registration of two similar surfaces. In most research that utilises Deep Learning (DL) models to handle surface registration two theories are investigated; the first being whether surfaces sampled from the same origin can be registered together, and the second theory being whether the models can register Point Clouds with low overlapping data for utilisation in Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) applications. However, the surface registration to be utilised in the HoloNav Augmented Reality (AR) navigation system will utilise Point Clouds sampled from different origins with a high overlap ratio. This research, therefore, aims to determine the viability of DL methods for surface registration in HoloNav data. To determine the viability, rotation and translation errors in the match were used, with the aforementioned metrics later being evaluated manually with the utilisation of a visualiser. The results indicate that the models can generalise on the navigator data for an initial Euler angle difference of 45 degrees, but due to the difference in sampling density on the utilised point clouds can not provide accurate matches. The Scent of a Smell: An Extensive Comparison between Textual and Structural Smells
Code smells are symptoms of poor design or implementation choices that have a negative effect on several aspects of software maintenance and evolution, such as program comprehension or change- and fault-proneness. This is why researchers have spent a lot of effort on devising methods that help developers to automatically detect them in source code. Almost all the techniques presented in literature are based on the analysis of structural properties extracted from source code, although alternative sources of information (e.g., textual analysis) for code smell detection have also been recently investigated. Nevertheless, some studies have indicated that code smells detected by existing tools based on the analysis of structural properties are generally ignored (and thus not refactored) by the developers. In this paper, we aim at understanding whether code smells detected using textual analysis are perceived and refactored by developers in the same or different way than code smells detected through structural analysis. To this aim, we set up two different experiments. We have first carried out a software repository mining study to analyze how developers act on textually or structurally detected code smells. Subsequently, we have conducted a user study with industrial developers and quality experts in order to qualitatively analyze how they perceive code smells identified using the two different sources of information. Results indicate that textually detected code smells are easier to identify and for this reason they are considered easier to refactor with respect to code smells detected using structural properties. The unseen and unacceptable face of digital libraries
The social and organisational aspects of digital libraries (DLs) are often overlooked, but this paper reviews how they can affect users' awareness and acceptance of DLs. An analysis of research conducted within two contrasting domains (clinical and academic) is presented which highlights issues of user interactions, work practices and organisational social structures. The combined study comprises an analysis of 98 in-depth interviews and focus groups with lecturers, librarians and hospital clinicians. The importance of current and past roles of the library, and how users interacted with it, are revealed. Web-based DLs, while alleviating most library resource and interaction problems, require a change in librarians' and DL designers' roles and interaction patterns if they are to be implemented acceptably and effectively. Without this role change, users will at best be unaware of these digital resources and at worst feel threatened by them. The findings of this paper highlight the importance of DL design and implementation of the social context and supporting user communication (i.e., collaboration and consultation) in information searching and usage activities. © Springer-Verlag 2004

Digital libraries in a clinical setting: Friend or foe?
Clinical requirements for quick accessibility to reputable, up-to-date information have increased the importance of web accessible digital libraries for this user community. To understand the social and organisational impacts of ward-accessible digital libraries (DLs) for clinicians, we conducted a study of clinicians. perceptions of electronic information resources within a large London based hospital. The results highlight that although these resources appear to be a relatively innocuous means of information provision (i.e. no sensitive data) social and organisational issues can impede effective technology deployment. Clinical social structures, which produce information. and technology. hoarding behaviours can result from poor training, support and DL usability
Acceptability of medical digital libraries
Evidenced-based medicine has increased the importance of quick accessibility to reputable, upto-date information. Web-accessible digital libraries (DLs) on the wards can address the demand for such information. The use and acceptability of these resources has, however, been lower than expected due to a poor understanding of the context of use. To appreciate the social and organizational impacts of ward-accessible DLs for clinicians, results of a study within a large London-based hospital are presented. In-depth interviews and focus groups with 73 clinicians (from pre-registration nurses to surgeons) were conducted, and the data analysed using the grounded theory method. It was found that clinical social structures interact with inadequate training provision (for senior clinicians), technical support and DL usability to produce a knowledge gap between junior and senior staff, resulting in information – and technology – hoarding behaviours. Findings also detail the perceived effectiveness of traditional and digital libraries and the impact of clinician status on information control and access. One important conclusion is that increased DL usability and adequate support and training for senior clinicians would increase perceptions of DLs as support for, rather than replacement of, their clinical expertise. © 2002, The Continuum Publishing Group Ltd. March dl: Adding Adaptive Heuristics and a New Branching Strategy
We introduce the march dl satisability (SAT) solver, a successor of march eq. The latter was awarded state-of-the-art in two categories during the Sat 2004 competition. The focus lies on presenting those features that are new in march dl. Besides a description, each of these features is illustrated with some experimental results. By extending the pre-processor, using adaptive heuristics, and by using a new branching strategy, march dl is able to solve nearly all benchmarks faster than its predecessor.
