ADAM SMITH'S VIEW OF HISTORY: CONSISTENT OR PARADOXICAL?
No full textThe conventional interpretation of Adam Smith is that he is a prophet of commercialism. The liberal capitalist reading of Smith is consistent with the view that history culminates in commercial society. The first part of the article develops this optimistic interpretation of Smith's view of history. Smith implies that commercial society is the end of history because 1) it supplies the ends of nature that he identifies; 2) it is inevitable; and 3) it is permanent. The second part of the article shows that Smith has some dark moments in his writings where he seems to reject completely such teleological notions. In this more civic humanist mood he confesses that commercial society does not supply the ends of nature, nor is it inevitable, nor is it permanent. Both views exist in Smith and the commentator is forced to choose between passages in Smith's work in order to support a particular interpretation of the former's view of history.Political Economy,
ADAM SMITH'S PESSIMISTIC VIEW OF THE FUTURE OF COMMERCIAL SOCIETY: RHETORIC OR REALITY?
No full textAdam Smith is generally viewed as a great optimist about commerce and commercialism. Consistent with this assessment is the conventional view that Smith believed in progress: he had an optimistic view of history. On the other hand, occasionally over the last thirty years commentators, such as Heilbroner, have suggested that Smith actually had a very pessimistic view of history and the prospects of commercial society. Can we explain Smith's apparent inconsistencies? One solution is that Smith "changed his mind" during his lifetime. Another suggestion, proposed by Muller, is that Heilbroner (and others holding similar views) failed to understand Smith's rhetoric. Muller is correct in suggesting that there is exaggeration in some of Smith's pessimistic statements. Nevertheless, Smith's vision has a darker tincture than Muller acknowledges: much of Smith's pessimism about commercial society remains a reality which cannot be neatly explained away as "rhetoric."International Relations/Trade,

No full textThe Alpine horror space in E.F. Benson’s story The Horror-Horn The article presents the image of the Alps in the work of the British writer Edward Frederick Benson. The author focuses in her reflections on Benson’s story The Horror-Horn, still unpublished in Poland, one of the first works which feature an icon of popular culture: the abominable snowman. In his story Benson depicts the Alps in accordance with a convention typical of horror literature, though the descriptions of mountain peaks have their roots also in the folk tradition or in mythological images. An analysis illustrating Benson’s “Alpine horror” mechanism is complemented by a fragment of The Horror-Horn translated into Polish.The Alpine horror space in E.F. Effective strategy making, co-designing as a tool for effective strategic planning
No full textThe study explores the factors for success of long-term spatial development policies. The theoretic frame assumed that co-ownership of the content of a development policy is not enough for sustained support. Co-creation of a development vision with all relevant parties in a region or city would entail co-authorship, which enhances the chances for longer lasting support. The researcher, being an experienced practitioner emphasizes the importance of the way participants interact in the decision-making process, which is often seen as a black-box with surprising outputs. The novel "interactions approach" addresses the question how the experiences of participants may result in perceptions and feelings of co-ownership and more importantly, of co-authorship. The empiric study analysis five projects in four European countries. The interrelations between context and content factors established within the cases confirmed the influence on effectiveness in decision-making rounds and the eventual success of co-designing a scenario for future development. The importance of open processes so that creativity is enabled and design methods can be practiced is essential. Involving of design trained experts and facilitating a design attitude in the decision making process of development strategies increases the possibilities of innovation in future circumstances. The Possibility of a Welfare Policy in a World of Emotion-Driven Individuals: A Humean Point of View
No full textBased on Hume's major philosophical works and on some of his Essays, this paper discusses formally the feasibility, from a Humean point of view, of a welfare policy which would aim at promoting the highest individual happiness whereas individual decisions, like individual happiness, are determined not only by allocations of goods, but also by an emotional state.
