Cultural Perspectives on the Interactions Between Nutrition, Health, and Psychological Functioning
Food and nutrition occupy the daily thoughts of most people, particularly the 178 million children who are malnourished and have been since their first birthday. While malnutrition is directly and indirectly responsible for one-third of child deaths in developing countries, overweight has been declared the number one health problem in other countries. More food is therefore not necessarily better when talking about health. This reading presents information on the major nutrients important for health and psychological functioning, including energy, protein, vitamin A, zinc, iron, and iodine. It also discusses how cultures differ in their food preferences and their beliefs about the good and ill effects of certain foods. Finally, solutions for tackling the problem of impaired growth and development of children are examined
Ultramicrosurgery: A new approach to treat primary male genital lymphedema
Summary: Background: Lymphedema is a chronic pathology characterized by progressive swelling due to lymphatic dysfunction (1). Literature contains few studies that focus on male genital lymphedema. A variety of surgical techniques as part of the male genital lymphedema therapeutic strategy has been described. Supramicrosurgical lymphatico-venular anastomosis s-LVA, based on connecting lymphatic collectors to venules, has evidenced efficient outcomes thus far. However, the peculiarity of the genital area may lead to an innovative and even more accurate surgical technique as a treatment of male genital lymphedema: lymphatic pre-collectors located superficially over the fascial layer can be used to perform the ultramicrosurgical anastomosis. Purpose of the study: In this paper, the authors report their experience of this new surgical concept based on anastomosing lymphatic precollectors to venules. Methods: We performed a retrospective study from 2014 to 2016. Six male patients with primary genital lymphedema underwent ultramicrosurgical lymphatico-venular anastomosis in Siena University Hospital, Italy. Results: Ultramicrosurgical lymphatico-venular anastomosis has evidenced positive outcomes in terms of prognosis, infectious complications, volume reduction, and quality of life. The average cellulitis rate dropped from 2.5 episodes a year to 0.5 episodes after surgical intervention. The mean satisfaction index passed from 1.33 before the intervention to 2.83. Conclusion: Ultramicrosurgical lymphatico-venular anastomosis represents a challenging physiological approach for male genital lymphedema with promising outcomes. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Effect of O2 control and monitoring on the nutraceutical properties of extra virgin olive oils
The presence of oxygen during malaxation has key role in improving Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) quality in terms of volatile and phenolic compounds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the head space malaxer oxygen concentration on the physicochemical characteristics and nutraceutical properties of EVOO from the Nocellara del Belice olives. The acidic compounds were related to the concentration of the oxygen presented in the machine headspace considering a new software application for the online oxygen management opportunely designed and applicable to all the existing plants. The right timepoint and oxygen concentration of the malaxation process was established. The best results were obtained when 30 L of oxygen were blowing after 25 min from the beginning of the malaxation process. The application of the novel software in the Oxygen Control Monitoring (OCM) system showed very interesting results in terms of nutraceutical properties
[Newspaper Clipping: Author Claims Evidence of Second JFK Assassin #1]

Also By The Same Author: AKTiveAuthor, a Citation Graph Approach to Name Disambiguation
The desire for definitive data and the semantic web drive for inference over heterogeneous data sources requires co-reference resolution to be performed on those data. In particular, name disambiguation is required to allow accurate publication lists, citation counts and impact measures to be determined. This paper describes a graph-based approach to author disambiguation on large-scale citation networks. Using self-citation, co-authorship and document source analyses, AKTiveAuthor clusters papers, achieving precision of 0.997 and recall of 0.818 over a test group of eight surname clusters
John F. Kennedy telegram to Roosevelt
Jersey Homesteads (later the Borough of Roosevelt) was established in the 1930s as an agro-industrial cooperative community. It was established specifically for urban Jewish garment workers, many of whom had emigrated from Europe. President John F. Kennedy sent a telegram to the citizens of Roosevelt, New Jersey, apologizing for not being able to attend the memorial dedication in honor of former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. (Jersey Homesteads became Roosevelt in 1945 in honor of the president.) President Kennedy expressed his gratitude to the people of Roosevelt for constructing the memorial, and commented that it will serve as a constant reminder of Roosevelt's good works
Fast field Cycling NMR for quality characterization of typical sicilian honeys.
Proton NMR relaxometry with fast field cycling (FFC-NMR) setup is developing as a very promising tool for the characterization of agro-food matrices. In fact, some papers have been published reporting on differences among balsamic vinegars, porous properties of oil-water emulsions and quality of meat-products.
In the present study, quality of some typical Sicilian honey samples has been evaluated by traditional wet-chemical analyses and FFC-NMR.
Nine wet-chemical parameters have been measured such as water content, pH, acidity (free, lactonic and total acidity), fructose, glucose, saccharose, electrical conductivity, diastase activity and colour. Results showed that 84% of the samples were correctly classified, whereas about 16% of them revealed some defects primarily due to erroneous industrial production practices and/or wrong storage conditions.
In order to differentiate honey samples according to their botanical and geographical origins, correlation times were measured by FFC- NMR and related to the wet-chemical properties by statistical evaluations. The statistical analysis revealed that water content affected correlation times. Moreover, honeys having similar botanical origin showed differences in their chemical composition, mainly attributable to the geographical areas of production.
The present study reported for the first time quality evaluation of honeys by FFC-NMR, thereby confirming the great potentiality of this technique for agro-food characterization
Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on psychophysical stress in patients with adrenal insufficiency: the CORTI-COVID study
Purpose: COVID-19 is a novel threat to patients with adrenal insufficiency (AI), whose life expectancy and quality (QoL) are impaired by an increased risk of infections and stress-triggered adrenal crises (AC). If infected, AI patients require prompt replacement tailoring. We assessed, in a cohort of AI patients: prevalence and clinical presentation of COVID-19; prevalence of AC and association with intercurrent COVID-19 or pandemic-related psychophysical stress; lockdown-induced emotional burden, and health-related QoL. Methods: In this monocentric (Ancona University Hospital, Italy), cross-sectional study covering February-April 2020, 121 (40 primary, 81 secondary) AI patients (59 males, 55 ± 17 years) completed telematically three questionnaires: the purpose-built “CORTI-COVID”, assessing medical history and concern for COVID-19-related global health, AI-specific personal health, occupational, economic, and social consequences; the AddiQoL-30; the Short-Form-36 (SF-36) Health Survey. Results: COVID-19 occurred in one (0·8% prevalence) 48-year-old woman with primary AI, who promptly tailored her replacement. Dyspnea lasted three days, without requiring hospitalization. Secondary AI patients were not involved. No AC were experienced, but pandemic-related stress accounted for 6/14 glucocorticoid up-titrations. Mean CORTI-COVID was similar between groups, mainly depending on “personal health” in primary AI (ρ = 0.888, p < 0.0001) and “economy” in secondary AI (ρ = 0.854, p < 0.0001). Working restrictions increased occupational concern. CORTI-COVID correlated inversely with QoL. AddiQoL-30 and SF-36 correlated strongly. Comorbidities worsened patients’ QoL. Conclusion: If educational efforts are made in preventing acute events, AI patients seem not particularly susceptible to COVID-19. The novel “CORTI-COVID” questionnaire reliably assesses the pandemic-related emotional burden in AI. Even under unconventional stress, educated AI patients preserve a good QoL
