Assessing Preparedness and Preventive Measures for Managing Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis in Primary Schools of Rabigh, Saudi Arabia
Background and Aims: Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can lead to life-threatening consequences. Despite growing awareness of food allergies, schools in Saudi Arabia remain underprepared to manage allergic reactions. This study aimed to evaluate the preparedness of primary schools in Rabigh, Saudi Arabia, in managing allergic reactions, with a focus on their policies and training practices to prevent food-related anaphylaxis. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted involving all 24 primary schools in Rabigh. We used a previously published questionnaire that was translated into Arabic and contextually adapted; however, no formal psychometric validation was performed. The questionnaire assessed school preparedness to manage allergic reactions and existing protocols for allergy management. Data were analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25 to examine associations between preparedness level and the presence of pupils with food allergy or anaphylaxis. Results: Nineteen schools (79%) completed the survey. Most schools (95%) had emergency communication systems, and 74% designated a staff member to manage allergic reactions. However, only 58% were aware of pupils with food allergies. Preventive measures such as food-handling guidance and a no-nut policy were present in most schools. Still, policies against food sharing and closer supervision of high-risk pupils were inconsistently implemented. A comparison between schools with and without pupils with allergies revealed that schools with such pupils were more likely to identify allergy risks and provide closer supervision during mealtimes (p = 0.042). Conclusions: While some primary schools in Rabigh reported strengths such as designated staff and emergency communication systems, substantial gaps were observed in preventive measures, including mealtime supervision and food-sharing policies. Preparedness varied across schools, with those without known allergic pupils less likely to implement preventive practices. These findings underscore the importance of standardised policies and regular staff training to ensure readiness for allergic emergencies in all schools
Freshness and Spoilage Patterns of Wild and Farmed Tropical Fish Species with Major Commercial Importance Originating from Saudi Arabian Waters
Ice-stored farmed barramundi (Lates calcarifer), snubnose pompano (Trachinotus blochii) and sobaity bream (Sparidentex hasta), as well as wild-caught cobia (Rachycentron canadum), coral trout (Plectropomus leopardus), giant trevally (Caranx ignobilis), milkfish (Chanos chanos) and mangrove red snapper (Lutjanus argentimaculatus), were compared for their freshness/spoilage using sensory, chemical and microbiological methods. Quality Index Method schemes were developed to determine alterations in the sensory freshness. The shelf lives ranged from 8 (coral trout) to 18 days (sobaity bream). The farmed species always exhibited a significantly longer shelf life than the wild-caught species. The adenosine triphosphate (ATP) breakdown followed different patterns in the studied species. The K-values at the time of sensory rejection ranged from 30 to 80% depending on the species, while the microbial load reached or exceeded a level of 6 log cfu/g. Although the shelf life duration was dependent on the origin of the fish (wild or farmed), the ATP breakdown scheme, as well as the K-values and microbial loads at the time of rejection, were species-dependent and independent of the origin

Metabolites were detected in cotyledons of R and S plants at 48- and 120-h post-inoculation with LM using UPLC-QTOF/MS. The mock-inoculated plants were used as controls. Some of the resistance-related specific pathways, including lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, were down-regulated in S plants but up-regulated in R plants at 21 °C. However, some of these pathways were down-regulated in R plants at 28 °C. Amino acid metabolism, lipid metabolism, alkaloid biosynthesis, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and flavonoid biosynthesis were the pathways linked to combined heat and pathogen stresses. By using network analysis and enrichment analysis, these pathways were identified as important. The pathways of carotenoid biosynthesis, pyrimidine metabolism, and lysine biosynthesis were identified as unique mechanisms related to heat stress and may be associated with the breakdown of resistance against the pathogen. The increased susceptibility of R plants at 28 °C resulted in the down-regulation of signal transduction pathway components and compromised signaling, particularly during the later stages of infection. Deactivating LM-specific signaling networks in R plants under heat stress may result in compatible responses and deduction in signaling metabolites, highlighting global warming challenges in crop disease control.Z. Bilateral Pulmonary Embolism in a 12-Year-Old Girl with Steroid-Resistant Nephrotic Syndrome
Nephrotic syndrome is the most common glomerular disease among children. Although most cases respond to steroid therapy, approximately 10–20% of patients exhibit resistance to conventional steroid therapy and are labeled as steroid-resistant. Such patients are at risk of complications, including infection, thrombosis, and chronic kidney disease. Nephrotic syndrome is considered a thrombogenic condition. Pulmonary embolism is associated with high mortality, and early treatment is essential for the survival of patients. Mythologizing the transition : a comparative study of Bahram Beyzaee and Wolfe Soyinka
Bahram Beyzaee, the Iranian playwright, screenwriter and filmmaker, and Wole Soyinka, the Nigerian poet, playwright, and novelist have produced artistic works that transcend the limitations of time and locality to become powerful comments on human life and socio-political and cultural institutions. This research study examines the major themes and dramatic techniques of these two writers to demonstrate how, in two very different cultural settings, traditional modes and themes appear in modem art forms to renegotiate cultural identity. I argue that both writers place themselves in a post postcolonial position which rather than being concerned about 'writing back against the centre' reflects on the cultural shortcomings that leaves their people at the mercy of vicious internal and external forces. I also demonstrate how they demythologize the traditional superstitious beliefs that haunt the present, foreground the inauthenticity of the modern hybrid obsessions that distort everyday life in their countries and mythologize and glorify the positive aspects of history and contemporary life to redefine cultural identity in terms of the best their cultures can offer. The first two chapters give an account of the history of Iranian and Nigerian performance forms in the context of socio-political, cultural, literary and artistic movements and traditions. The third chapter proceeds to present a short discussion of the theatrical vision and themes of Beyzaee and Soyinka and embarks on a general comparison of the two writers. Chapter four is focused on Beyzaee and Soyinka's depiction of the intellectuals as sacrificial heroes whose death may initiate social purgation and cultural regeneration and liberation. Chapter five is less mythical and more sociopolitical. It is a reflection on the writers' portrayal of women in their works and their success or failure in transcending literary and cultural stereotypes in a world where the means of production and socio-economic facts and the cultural developments associated with them demand a rapid movement away from patriarchal values. Chapter six is devoted to the study of another major issue in the process of cultural transition, namely, redefining the position of ethnic minorities in the myth of nationhood. This last chapter is followed by a brief conclusion, discussing the results and the future possibilities of drama in the context of rapid transition
Urine analysis sensitivity and specificity for paediatric urinary tract infections
BackgroundPaediatric urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common infections among children and a reliable method for diagnosis is critical for management. Few studies have discussed the relationship between the number of leukocytes in the microscopic urinalysis and urine culture.AimsOur aim was to determine the sensitivity and specificity of pyuria as a predictor of culture- proven UTI in the paediatric age group.MethodsThis retrospective study was conducted between 2015 and 2020 at King Abdulaziz University Hospital. Demographic data, history of congenital anomalies, and microscopic urine analysis of 315 participants (≤ 14 years old) was analysed. Pyuria was defined as > 5 WBC /HPF.ResultsUTI was diagnosed in 115 patients based on urine culture. The most common organism was Escherichia coli. Non-E. coli UTI are more common with vesicoureteral reflux patients. Pyuria was found to be positive in 134 (42.5 per cent) of the total sample; 80 of them had a confirmed UTI, with sensitivity of 70 per cent and specificity of 73 per cent. Nitrite has a high sensitivity (66 per cent) but a low specificity. The association between pyuria and positive urine culture was strongly and independently significant (P=0.001). Pyuria and nitrite positivity appear to be more sensitive to E. coli.ConclusionIn conclusion, pyuria is a strong predictor for urinary tract infection in the paediatric age group and is a wise initial test
