Are bank risk disclosures informative? Evidence from debt markets

    No full text
This study examines whether financial reporting with a specific focus on risk disclosures have a predictive (informative) effect on banks’ credit ratings (BCRs) and, consequently, ascertains whether governance structures can moderate such an association. Using one of the largest bank-level datasets collected from 12 Middle East and North African (MENA) countries over the 2006-2013 period to-date, our findings are as follows. First, we find that risk disclosures have a predictive effect on BCRs. Second, we find that the relationship between risk disclosures and BCRs is contingent on the quality of governance structures. Specifically, we find that the informativeness of risk disclosures on BCRs is higher in banks with larger board size, greater independence, higher government ownership, and better Shariah supervisory board, but lower in banks with greater block ownership, higher foreign ownership and the presence of CEO duality. The central tenor of our findings remains unchanged after controlling for a number of firm- and country-level factors, alternative risk disclosure measures, firm- and national-level governance proxies, different types of banks, and potential endogeneities. The findings have important implications for investors, especially bondholders, standard-setters, regulators, and central governments

Bu çalışmada, Hanefi fakihlerinden İmam Tâcüşşerîa Ömer b. Ahmed el-Mahbûbî'nin Nihâyetü'l-Kifâye li-Dirâyeti'l-Hidâye adlı eserini tahkik ederek değerlendirdik. El yazma, Merginânî'nin el-Hidâye şerhu bidâyetü'l-mübtedî adlı eserinin "kavluhu" tipi kısmî şerhidir. Müellif, eserini anlaşılır bir üslupla yazmıştır. Eser, el-Hidâye'nin en eski ikinci şerhi olması ve kapalı yönlerini şerh etmesi yönüyle faydalıdır. Eserin müellifi Tâcüşşerîa, Orta Asya Hanefî mezhebi tarihi, Buhara ilim ve siyasetinde öne çıkan/sadr ailelerinden Mahbûbîler'e mensuptur. Müellifin soy ağacındaki baba, oğul ve vefat bilgisi ile ilgili karışıklığı, çeşitli el yazmalardaki şecerelerden gidererek torunundan aşağı doğru ailenin yakınlık sırası Sadrüşşerîa es-Sani Ubeydullah b. Mesud b. Tâcüşşerîa Ömer b. Sadrüşşerîa el-Evvel Ahmed b. Ubeydullah b. In this study, we evaluated the work of Imam Tajussharia Omar b. Ahmad al-Mahbûbî, one of the Hanafi faqihs, titled Nihâyah al-Kifâyah li-Dirâyah al-Hidâyah. The manuscript is the partial commentary of the "kavluhu" type of Marginânî's al-Hidâyah şerhu bidâyah al-mubtedî. The author wrote his work in an understandable style. The work is useful in that it is the second oldest commentary of al-Hidayah, and it interprets the closed aspects. The author of the work, Tajussharia, belongs to the Mahbûbîs one of the prominent / sadr families in the history of the Hanafi sect of Central Asia, the science and politics of Bukhara. Clearing up the confusion about the father, son and death information in the author's family tree from the genealogies in various manuscripts, the order of closeness of the family from the grandson down is Sadrushsharia as-Sani Ubaydullah b. Masud b. Tajussharia Omar b. Sadrushsharia al-Awwal Ahmad b. Ubaydullah b. Ibrahim. The date of his death should not be 709, but a date after 696 compared to the events he experienced. There are about 30 copies of the manuscript, and we have compared and examined 10 of the 12 copies of the second volume. The copy of the Fatih Library, on which we are based, is one of the oldest copies written by the author and the closest copy to his life. Our study is the chapters between the bay'/sale-ikrâh/coercion chapters of the second volume of the manuscript

Multicomponent image segmentation using a genetic algorithm and artificial neural network

    No full text
Image segmentation is an essential process for image analysis. Several methods were developed to segment multicomponent images, and the success of these methods depends on several factors including 1) the characteristics of the acquired image and 2) the percentage of imperfections in the process of image acquisition. The majority of these methods require a priori knowledge, which is difficult to obtain. Furthermore, they assume the existence of models that can estimate its parameters and fit to the given data. However, such a parametric approach is not robust, and its performance is severely affected by the correctness of the utilized parametric model. In this letter, a new multicomponent image segmentation method is developed using a nonparametric unsupervised artificial neural network called Kohonen's self-organizing map (SOM) and hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA). SOM is used to detect the main features that are present in the image; then, HGA is used to cluster the image into homogeneous regions without any a priori knowledge. Experiments that are performed on different satellite images confirm the efficiency and robustness of the SOM-HGA method compared to the Iterative Self-Organizing DATA analysis technique (ISODATA). © 2007 IEEE.ARIA EH, 2004, P 20 ISPRS C IST TUR, P117; AWAD M, IN PRESS INT J REMOT; BACAO F, 2005, P ICCS 2005 C, P476; Baker J. The sorption of ammonia on brown coal

    No full text
© 1978 Dr. Awad Rizk OussaThis thesis is a report of an investigation carried out by the author between 1st April 1969 to 31st October 1973 on a full time basis and from 1st December 1975 to 31st July 1978 on a part time basis. The research project was conducted by the author in the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Melbourne, and on the premises of Australian Char Pty. Ltd., Morwell. The project was based on the premise that useful information on the brown coal-ammonia system can be obtained from sorption isotherms. The author designed and assembled the apparatus with this in mind, and developed a method of obtaining a self-consistent and meaningful interpretation of the sorption isotherms. Thermodynamic data for the ammonia sorption process was derived and used to develop a preliminary model for the ammonia-brown coal system. No separate literature review has been presented in the thesis, though frequent reference to the literature has been made in the discussions in each chapter. Finally, the experimental details have been included in the appendices at the end of the thesis

Superconducting properties of zinc substitution in Tl-2223 phase

    No full text
The effect of partial replacement of copper by zinc in Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10-δ superconductor phase is studied. Superconducting samples of the nominal composition Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3-xZnx O10-δ with x ranging from 0 to 0.6 are prepared under normal pressure by a one step of solid-state reaction technique. The samples are characterized by using X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and EDX. The X-ray data indicate that the partial replacement of Cu2+ions by Zn2+ions does not influence the tetragonal structure of the samples, and the lattice parameters a and c vary according to the difference in the ionic radii of Cu and Zn. The superconducting parameters, such as superconducting transition temperature Tc, critical current density Jc and irreversibility field Bir are calculated from electrical resistivity and AC-magnetic susceptibility measurements. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Anomalous Thermally Induced Deformation in Kelvin–Voigt Plate with Ultrafast Double-Strip Surface Heating

    No full text
The Jeffreys-type heat conduction equation with flux precedence describes the temperature of diffusive hot electrons during the electron–phonon interaction process in metals. In this paper, the deformation resulting from ultrafast surface heating on a “nanoscale” plate is considered. The focus is on the anomalous heat transfer mechanisms that result from anomalous diffusion of hot electrons and are characterized by retarded thermal conduction, accelerated thermal conduction, or transition from super-thermal conductivity in the short-time response to sub-thermal conductivity in the long-time response and described by the fractional Jeffreys equation with three fractional parameters. The recent double-strip problem, Awad et al., Eur. Phy. J. Plus 2022, allowing the overlap between two propagating thermal waves, is generalized from the semi-infinite heat conductor case to thermoelastic case in the finite domain. The elastic response in the material is not simultaneous (i.e., not Hookean), rather it is assumed to be of the Kelvin–Voigt type, i.e., σ=Eε+τεε˙, where σ refers to the stress, ε is the strain, E is the Young modulus, and τε refers to the strain relaxation time. The delayed strain response of the Kelvin–Voigt model eliminates the discontinuity of stresses, a hallmark of the Hookean solid. The immobilization of thermal conduction described by the ordinary Jeffreys equation of heat conduction is salient in metals when the heat flux precedence is considered. The absence of the finite speed thermal waves in the Kelvin–Voigt model results in a smooth stress surface during the heating process. The temperature contours and the displacement vector chart show that the anomalous heat transfer characterized by retardation or crossover from super- to sub-thermal conduction may disrupt the ultrafast laser heating of metals

Progressive image transmission using edge detection

    No full text
In this paper, a progressive image compression and transmission using edge detection scheme is adopted. The image is decomposed into two (primary and secondary) components. Canny method is adopted to detect the edges of the encoded image. These edges are replaced with a pre-designed nine basis nameplates. Then, the Macro edge detection technique is used to reduce the number of these nameplates and keep only the edges that are necessary for visual quality. Eight directional predictions and interpolation technique will be performed on the encoded edges to reconstruct the first layer of the primary component at both receiver and transmitter sides. This is called the 1st stage reconstructed image, which is subtracted from the original to have the 1st stage smooth component. Then, this process will be repeated for the 2nd and the 3rd stage components. The 3rd stage smooth component is filtered using an optimal decomposition filter and then decimated by a factor of 2. The decimated component is encoded using VQ. The decoded result of the smooth image is added to the three layers that form the primary component to have the reconstructed image. An excellent reconstructed images are found at an average of 0.179 bpp (compression ratio 45:1) and with an average PSNR of 39.45 dB. This algorithm is found to be of lower bit rate than existing image compression techniques.Corresponding Author: Prof. Awad Kh. The biography novel is a modern narrative writing genre, combining between two well-known narrative artists characteristics, the biography and the novel. The novel of “Hymn of Persia” (ternimet Faris) by Awad Al-Alqami is belongs to this type of writing, in which the author recounts the events that he and his family and region have experienced since the rule of the Sultanates in the 1950s till 2018s the time of writing this novel, which divided it by the Author into four tales’ structure whose narrative threads were consistent and coherent. It is: Cactus's born tale, Displaced people tale, manhood prematurely tale, and an expected return story. We have reviewed it critically, in terms of formal elements such as title, author's name and supplementary text, as well as the structure of the main and secondary characters, spatial and temporal structure. In our study, we took this descriptive and analytical curriculum. Then we concluded to these results

Shear behaviour of continuous concrete beams reinforced with GFRP bars

    No full text
Continuous beams represent main structural elements in most reinforced concrete (RC) structures such as parking garages and overpass bridges. Deterioration of such structures due to corrosion of steel reinforcement is common in North America. To overcome the corrosion problems, the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars and stirrups becomes a viable alternative to steel reinforcement. However, to date, the shear behaviour of FRP-RC continuous beams has not been explored yet. As such, the objective of this study is to investigate the shear behaviour of such beams. In this study, twenty four full-scale continuous concrete beams were constructed and tested. The test beams had rectangular cross section with 200-mm width and a height of 300, 550 or 850 mm and were continuous over two equal spans. The main investigated parameters were concrete strength, type and ratio of longitudinal reinforcement, type and ratio of transverse reinforcement and beam effective depth. Moreover, a 3-D nonlinear finite element model (FEM) was constructed to simulate the behaviour of FRP-RC continuous beams. The model was verified against the experimental results and validated against test results from previous studies. Then, the verified/validated model was used to conduct a parametric study to investigate the effect of a wide range of the parameters on the shear behaviour of GFRP-RC beams. The experimental and FEM results showed that shear-critical GFRP-RC continuous beams exhibited moment redistribution. Also, it was observed that increasing the concrete strength and the longitudinal reinforcement ratio increased the shear strength significantly. Moreover, the presence of GFRP stirrups significantly enhanced the shear strength of the tested beams. Regarding the size effect, test results showed that there was adverse or no size effect on the shear strength of GFRP-RC continuous beams when they failed in the interior shear span while beams failed in the exterior shear span exhibited clear size effect. Furthermore, a comparison between the test results and the provisions of the available models and FRP standards and design guidelines in North America revealed that these design provisions can be safely applied to continuous beams.February 201
