    Intellectual property laws and Islam in Malaysia.

    PhDThis study is undertaken on the premise that Islam and Islamic law is to be taken into serious consideration in any future legislative reform of laws in Malaysia. Islam being the religion of the country and the strong religious sentiment of the Muslims (who form the majority in Malaysia) cannot be overlooked or dismissed lightly by the legislators in Malaysia. Reformation of intellectual property laws is timely, as we are now approaching to the dateline set by GATF-Trips agreement which aim is to improve our standard of intellectual property protection. This study seeks to analyze and evaluate the current legislation pertaining to intellectual property in Malaysia in terms of the philosophy and rules governing the existence, ownership and exercise of these rights and their consistency and inconsistency with Islam and Islamic law. The main objective of this study is to prove that a coherent and logical conceptual framework of ownership of intellectual property can be derived from an Islamic perspective which not only offers the basis of rights but also defines the scope of these rights. From the point of ownership of rights, support can be obtained from the normative framework of property rights within the traditional classification of 'mal' (property) and 'haqq al-milkiyyah' (ownership rights) under Islamic law. From the point of exercise of rights, the exact scope can be defined from the analysis of fundamental concepts which have been developed by Muslim jurists. It has been established that Islam and Islamic law offers a sound and systematic paradigm, which in deeper analysis, can satisfy both our current obligations under international treatises, as well as our responsibility to practise our religion to the fullest

    An attribute grammar approach to specifying Halstead\u27s metrics

    Attribute grammars have been used in defining programming languages and constructing compilers. Since these are concerned with the syntax and static semantics of the source code of the language, attribute grammars can be effectively used to define source code metrics on it. Most of the source code metrics are based on measuring models of the source code. However, there is no formal way of specifying the mapping of the source code onto the models. This paper attempts to provide an approach using an attribute grammar to demonstrate how Halsteads metrics may be specified in an unambiguous manner on the source code itself

    Development of Expert Database System for Environmental Impact Assessment (EDEIA)

    Expert Database System for Environmental Impact Assessment (EDEIA) was developed using FoxPro and CLIPS. It consists of a database and an expert system prototype. The EDEIA system developed a database system that allows an EIA expert to manage EIA report information and produced a set of rules that enable the ES to be aware of the existing environment component classes. The rules were developed according to the environmental component classification characteristics. The system is based on three assumptions: the environmental components and prescribed activities should be classified, the description of environmental component classes as well as the prescribed activities information must be collectedand finally, the potential impact, mitigation measures and residual impact have to be clearly specified. The main role for EDEIA is to assist EIA experts and companies in producing complete and efficient EIA reports. The system is very useful in supporting EIA expert prediction of expected potential environment impact and best method for mitigation measures. The EDEIA system has friendly graphical user interface, as well as satisfying EIA report requirement

    Towards semantic mutation testing of aspect-oriented programs

    Aspect-oriented programs have received much attention from software testing researchers. Various testing techniques and approaches have been proposed to tackle issues and challenges when testing aspect-oriented programs including traditional mutation testing. In traditional mutation testing of aspect-oriented programs, mutants are generated by making small changes to the syntax of the aspect-oriented language. Recently, a new approach known as semantic mutation testing has been proposed. This approach mutates the semantics of the language in which the program is written. The mutants generated misunderstandings of the language which are different classes of faults. Aspect-oriented programming presents itself with different properties that can be further explored with respect to semantic mutation testing. This paper describes various possible scenarios that semantic mutation testing strategy might have particular value in testing aspect-oriented programs

    AbstractWe conducted a survey amongst software development's IT practitioners on their awareness towards the ambiguity that occurs in the System Requirement Specification (SRS) written in the Malay language. Previous research shows that there exists an acknowledged and unacknowledged ambiguity when people deal with SRS. Our objective is to investigate and confirm that most likely IT practitioners in Malaysia tend to overlook the potential of ambiguities in the documentation of SRS written in the Malay language. Inaccurate SRS will usually give an impact towards an end product of software systems. We believe it can complicate software development processes and result in an unsatisfying agreement between user and software product team. The result shows that there exist ambiguity and vagueness in industrial Malay textual SRS in the form of multiple interpretations as users faced difficulties in understanding what the requirements of the SRS thereby significantly affecting the designing process

    Adoption of requirements engineering practices in Malaysian software development companies

    This paper presents exploratory survey results on Requirements Engineering (RE) practices of some software development companies in Malaysia. The survey attempted to identify patterns of RE practices the companies are implementing. Information required for the survey was obtained through a survey, mailed self-administered questionnaires distributed to project managers and software developers who are working at software development companies operated across the country. The results showed that the overall adoption of the RE practices in these companies is strong. However, the results also indicated that fewer companies in the survey have use appropriate CASE tools or software to support their RE process and practices, define traceability policies and maintain traceability manual in their projects

    The ever-growing usage of aspect-oriented development methodology in the field of software engineering requires tool support for both research environments and industry. So far, tool support for many activities in aspect-oriented software development has been proposed, to automate and facilitate their development. For instance, the AJaTS provides a transformation system to support aspect-oriented development and refactoring. In particular, it is well established that the abstract interpretation of programs, in any paradigm, pursued in static analysis is best served by a high-level programs representation, such as Control Flow Graph (CFG). This is why such analysis can more easily locate common programmatic idioms for which helpful transformation are already known as well as, association between the input program and intermediate representation can be more closely maintained. However, although the current researches define the good concepts and foundations, to some extent, for control flow analysis of aspectoriented programs but they do not provide a concrete tool that can solely construct the CFG of these programs. Furthermore, most of these works focus on addressing the other issues regarding Aspect- Oriented Software Development (AOSD) such as testing or data flow analysis rather than CFG itself. Therefore, this study is dedicated to build an aspect-oriented control flow graph construction tool called AJcFgraph Builder. The given tool can be applied in many software engineering tasks in the context of AOSD such as, software testing, software metrics, and so forth

    Hybrid LTE-802.11ac network: Qos optimality evaluation of the voip codecs techniques

    In response to the growing demand for higher quality Voice over IP (VoIP) communication, there are multiple high-speed access links, including Wi-Fi and Long Term Evolution (LTE) for the mobile end-users. The combination of the access links provides a hybrid network environment in which the end-users can switch from one to another, whichever provides a higher level of VoIP quality of service (QoS). Apart from the type of the access link, the VoIP codecs are also another key factor that directly affects the overall QoS of the voice communication. Due to inherent characteristics, different networks have distinct limitations and requirements. Considering these differences, the visualizing and analysing the performance and behaviour of each codec on its underlying network will lead to a proper VoIP codec selection, which in turn will result in optimal voice QoS for the mobile end-users. This study proposes a method to quantify and analyse the performance of different VoIP codecs in a hybrid LTE-802.11ac network in which the mobile end-users have two corresponding network interface cards. The aim is to find the codecs that suit the most for LTE and 802.11ac networks and thereby optimize the QoS of the VoIP communication. The NS3 tool is used to develop and implement a variety of distinct scenarios within which different QoS performance metrics are precisely measured. The obtained results signify the extensive impact of the codecs on the QoS of the voice communication for both LTE and 802.11ac users and also the importance of the VoIP codec selection procedure for each network
