It is mainly within and around Mediterranean itineraries that the European Union seeks its in/tangible cultural heritage, an important component of both individual and collective identities. This volume brings together different strands of analysis, helping to shed light on the multifaceted entities that constitute the vibrant socio-semiotic landscape of the Mediterranean. The volume views this scenario from a cross-cultural perspective, and investigates the domains of national identities and stereotypes, advertising and social media, TV series, myths and festivals, landscapes, culture-bound terms, migrating words and food. Given the variety of perspectives and methodological approaches with a specific focus on the prominent role of English in representing the Mediterranean heritage, despite the fact that it is a non-Mediterranean language, this volume can offer useful insights to students and practitioners of discourse analysis, bridging the gap between academic research and class practice at the university level. From an educational perspective the book, which also includes practical worksheets, can be used in first and second level degrees in Foreign Languages, Communication, Political Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies, as well as courses in linguistics, multimodal studies, critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics

The cityscape of Naples is a kaleidoscope in continuous transformation. Assuming that the presence of migrant traders – shopkeepers and street vendors – is a privileged point of observation, we carried out an inquiry on 6500 citizens with migration background, through a GIS also. The source of the data that we collected and processed come from the archives of the Chamber of Commerce of Naples. The reference period of the data is from January 1900 to December 2020. The study on nationality of the business owners, locations and enrolment period of the activities reveals something about how migrants play a role within the social division of space connected. To this end, we looked at the main concentrations at different scales: from the municipal scale, passing through the hamlet one, to the street level

This contribution presents the results of an initial inquiry focused on the phenomenon of the great spread of everyday products shops owned by migrants. Field research was carried on on a wide city portion of the city centre of Naples aiming at analysing, in terms of opportunities and limitations, on the one hand, the implication of these businesses on local territorial dynamics; on the other hand, the role that the opening of these small businesses has on individual migratory paths

Applying the theoretical and methodological paradigm of ecostylistics to analyse the sections “What to See & Do”, "Places”, “About Malta”, and “Gozo and Comino” of the official tourist portal of the Maltese archipelago, the aim of the contribution is to identify what linguistic and textual strategies are used, within a more general framework of tourism discourse, to represent Malta a) as a site for heritage tourism (Dallen and Boyd 2003; Park 2014), and b) as “truly Mediterranean”. More specifically, an ecostylistic analysis of one written text presented in the section “What to See & Do” will be carried out, in order to distinguish those linguistic features which form part of the language of tourism from those stylistic features of Malta’s official tourism website that, far from being deployed to describe and provide information about spaces, places and landscapes, are utilised as implicit persuasive means (Östman 2005) to promote the archipelago as a tourist destination worth visiting for its history, heritage, culture and Mediterranean appeal. In addition, a brief examination of the keywords ‘Mediterranean’ and ‘history’, ‘heritage’, ‘culture’ in the pages crosslinked to the text analysed will be offered, in order to provide further co-textual support to the findings of the ecostylistic analysis

EUnited in Diversity: Turkish Women between Tradition and Modernity

A bridge over the Mediterranean sea, suspended between East and West, Turkey reflects the coexistence of an old national heritage and new cultural models. Turkey is still a candidate for accession to the European Union. The country is the object of a media campaign that aims to testify the progress made in the adaptation to European standards. The Europeanization of Turkey is also enacted by means of the discursive construction of a European Turkish woman, recognizing its importance among the priorities of the EU’s social policies. This chapter focuses on the videos, ‘Turkish women – Between tradition and modernity’ (released in 2005 by the European Commission Audiovisual Service on the occasion of Turkey’s admission to negotiations for accession), ‘Focus on Southeast Europe: Turkey − Gender Equality’ (2009), and compares them with more recent promotional audiovisual material that appeared in the section ‘Enlargement Policy’ of the EUROPA website (www.europa.eu), which is specifically dedicated to EU promotional discourse. Based on a multimodal critical discourse analysis approach, this multifaceted investigation examines the linguistic and semiotic strategies (Wodak, Chilton 2007) enacted by the EU for this campaign. In particular, the analysis reveals how visual and textual choices (such as framing of shots, lexicon, modality and narratives - Kress, van Leeuwen 2006), depicting Turkey through the lens of Western values, can contribute to drawing the country closer to the West. The study discusses which aspects and values of the Mediterranean culture are stressed and which are downplayed in the representation of Turkish women, and how their voices are exploited to narrate themes other than the female condition (Schiffrin, Tannen, Hamilton 2001). The progress of the whole country is thus propagandized in various economic and social areas, all for the purpose of consensus formation about enlargement policies

Planning with water: from end of pipe investment to operating on needs

The article is an account of research in progress at Naples University Federico II. The aim of the research is to confirm the thesis that the “end of pipe” approach, meant to improve the resilience of river basins, is often less efficient than solutions based on common actions designed to have a positive impact on the reduction of expected water flows. Even today, the solutions undertaken by the Public Administration are often based on the reconfiguration of rivers and canals and on traditional mitigation measures such as the construction of huge detention basins dug in the ground to temporarily store excess water volumes. This approach, however, in addition to being less efficient compared to interventions and actions tailored to the cause of the problem, has substantial impact on the landscape consolidated over time around the flows. The model used to try out the effects of different solutions on the hydraulic load is built by the basin of a small canal named Alveo dei Camaldoli, in the metropolitan city of Naples, characterized by the succession of agricultural areas, intensively urbanized areas, and degraded areas. This important artificial canal was the object of a proposed reconfiguration of its physical structure. The project aims to mitigate the flooding risk. Today it still has to be carried out because the public authorities in defense of the landscape are not favorable. The research has produced a list of solutions potentially reproducible on a large scale. Such solutions, through the model, have been tested on: the impact on the hydraulic load acting on the canal; costs and benefits of different solutions; administrative and technological viability; the possibility of further improvement and side effect
