    No full text
The constructive system that was proposed after the seismic events of the 19th century in the island of Ischia was characterized by the "casa baraccata”. In Casamicciola the church of Santa Maria Maddalena Penitente – still today existing – was built as a “house” completely made of iron. This building is one of the most representative examples of mixed structure in which the iron elements are protected and masked by the wall structures, with which they collaborate. Another important building located in the municipality of Forio is the basilica of Santa Maria di Loreto. At the beginning of the 18th century the building was lengthened, and a second quadrangular dome and a choir were added. After the earthquake of 1883, the dome was replaced by a coffered ceiling. The circular dome on the primitive transept was "redone" in 1779 and still today exists

Enviromental green and historic gardens: nature of the unbuilt in Naples

    No full text
The contemporary city is often the result of fragmentary logics, casualness and compartmentalization: there is a lack of “urban space culture” and a public and private architectural culture prevails “against” a public space culture. This facet is also found in Naples, where on the contrary, the historic city was specifically characterized by public spaces and both private and public green areas: the city’s eco-sustainable development is an objective of a particular value if we recognize the “centrality” of green expressed by cultures that have preceded us. Today, therefore, is not exclusively a matter of assessing this lack of green spaces and, at large, of fixtures and public services, but also of finding the causes of such inadequate current reality and put forward a suitable regeneration plan of Naples’ historic centre aimed to the development of nature’s presence, distinguishing element of the historic and urban landscape

The church, built in 1593 by the Art of Silk Guild, was completely renovated in 1759, under the direction of the architect Gennaro Papa, recovering surviving elements of the 16th-century structure. It has a single nave with four chapels on each side and a large apse. Damaged during the war and the 1980 earthquake, the monument has been object of restorations and consolidation in the 20th century. In particular, the instabilities on which they intervened were in the masonry of the last two chapels to the right of the nave and in the hypogeum: armed perforations, reinforced fixing of walls’ corners, injections of binding mixtures were carried out. These works make us think about the evolution of the approach in anti-seismic legislation and the disciplinary acquisitions on the restoration/consolidation relationship, particularly as regards to the concept of seismic "improvement"

Facing the economic and social crisis in Naples and its metropolitan area, those who study issues related to restoration and rehabilitation of historic urban fabric have to question the outcomes of decisions made in the aftermath of the earthquake of 1980, completing a survey of experiences that, from the comparison with the reality of today proves disappointing, if not bankruptcy. Initiatives emerge as piecemeal and ineffective, without a general framework, also addresses to international charters seem completely ignored, as the concept of integrated conservation

    No full text

The Verona Master Plan was entrusted to Plinio Marconi, who had also been commissioned to draw up plans for the cities of Rimini and Bologna. Piero Gazzola, the Superintendent, participated as a counterpart and questioned a number of aspects of that instrument. The work done by Plinio Marconi has been singled out among the 'example cases' of Italian cities linked in the postwar period by aspects of monumental interest

Recovery, renovation, redevelopment, restoration of the built heritage and energy-related interventions are all operations that must go hand in hand, so as to pursue urban regeneration actions that provide for the historic built environment to cut energy costs, waste and use of non-recyclable materials without distorting stratified characters and values. Greener and sustainable historic cities are a possible and achievable goal, but getting there requires action through targeted measures
