A Quasi-optimal Spectral Method for Turbulent Flows in Non-periodic Geometries
In this work, a quasi-optimal spectral solver for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations is proposed which is able to treat nonperiodic geometries by construction. The method is based on a fractional-step time discretization recently proposed by Guermond andMinev.A Chebyshev–Galerkin spatial discretization is adopted to satisfy the LBB condition while maintaining an efficient treatment of the linear and nonlinear, dealiased, terms. A careful construction of the algorithm allows the computational complexity to grow as CN 3 log N in 3D
Political Fragmentation and Coalition Alignment effects: Evidence from health Transfers to Italian Regions
Do government parties positively discriminate in favor of swing or aligned sub-national units while allocating public resources? This paper integrates these two strands of the literature and makes a new contribution by incorporating the insightful perspective of the political fragmentation approach. Using a dataset of Italian regions between 2001 and 2011 constructed from primary sources and a new index of fractionalization, based on Golosov (Party Politics 16(2):171–192), we empirically find that it is the fragmentation of the aligned recipient government that affects the final amount of resources, rather than the alignment itself. Quasi-formula-based grants do not remove the arbitrariness that allows for politically motivated targeting

This article is centred on the analysis of some of the early works by one of the most important German authors of 18th century, Christoph Martin Wieland. He was considered up until 1950s as a ‘rococo’ author, then an Enlightenment writer, and only recently as a classic one. In reality, Wieland avoida any precise classification, like all the great authors. In 1760s, when he returns to the town of his birth, Biberach, Wieland writes his first novel (Die Geschichte des Agathon) and the first psychological novel (Don Sylvio) in German literature and distances himself from his past as an enthusiastic pietist. Again in those years, he also wrote those words for which he was defined as a rococo writer. The article here presented analyses the form and content of those works, demonstrating how Wieland also deals with the esoteric tradition which is at the origins of the Enlightenment, but distances himself from the vulgar forms of Hermetic doctrine. Analysing the connection with the historical sources which contributed to the spread of esoteric thought in 18th century German literature, the article proposes to redefine the role of the texts in question within the Wielandian production and in a temporal context
Bilder von Arabern und Türken im 16. Jahrhundert: Fortunatus (1509), Schöne Magelone (1527), Historia von D. Johann Fausten (1587)
The article goes over the manner in which the German Renaissance world confronts itself with otherness, in particular the Islamic, Arabic and Turkish worlds. To this end it considers, above all, three very well-known ‘Prosaromane’ (Fortunatus, Schöne Magelone and Historia v. D. Johann Fausten) that are expressions of the three phases of the German language following the Renaissance. The first is marked by a general optimism, the second already shows the signs of a lack of confidence in the chance of improvement, the third is evidently an age of decline and pessimism. The article wants to show how the perception of otherness – otherness of language, customs, landscapes and above all religion – is perfectly functional in defence mechanisms. The more the European context is flourishing and optimistic, the weaker the sense of otherness, the more the authors have a living feeling of the economic superiority of their own country, the more interest there is in what is far-off. Little by little as the crisis is felt, otherness loses its charm, and when an author pushes us in its direction it almost always leads to its demonization
‚Bescheidenheit‘.
