Ideas for the recovery of an urban street
It is not uncommon to note that urban empty spaces are thought of as mere void, as poor remains with no content,
meant only for serving movement of people and cars. Depriving the road of its role as agora, as set of events and
episodes of urban life and simply turn it into a movement space, or even into a cars domain, can cause large and
dangerous outcomes on the urban landscape. The disappearance of pedestrian areas makes it difficult for them to move,
causing the exclusion of those who cannot drive and voiding any broader use of social significance. Moreover, a road
meant for cars is a dangerous scenario for pedestrians. This makes it necessary to think of the road as part of the urban
landscape, not mere residual space or gap between “full” spaces. It should be considered as an event capable of giving a
new and broader meaning to urban fragments, giving them new status, more fertile content
Criteri per il recupero di strade esistenti
A main issue in recovering roads, in urban areas, as in rural sites, is to define in a broader sense its role. Roads are seen as a mere burden or a sever onus. Roads often act as a boarder, as a caesura. Transversal unions are prevented. Since it is a net line, a boarder, a road must be conceived, in primis, so as not to disrupt transversal interactions. Besides, a more sensitive idea of design must be aimed to conceive roads as a source of value for a site. A road can be a mean to create sense, so as to confer content to, and to structure, a landscape
Sustainable urban roads
A detailed urban road study cannot prescind from the theme of recovery of its role as heart of urban life. This premise implies a subversion of the common trend to consider the road as a non-place designed for the mere car transit. This presumed car hegemony is the main cause of degradation in urban areas. The increase in vehicular flow and the related harmful phenomena (accidents, harmful emissions, noise, land consumption) cause the disappearance of “relational spaces”, therefore a net decrease in volume and content of activities of which the road is the scenario. On the contrary, the road has to be a scenario for a wide range of high social context and calibre events; these presuppose that the road is also a stage for a wide range of voluntary and social activities. These activities pretend high standards of thermal, acoustic and visual comfort areas with accessibility, safety and aesthetic value necessary to persuade people to a more fruitful use of the road. It is fundamental, in the recovery of a road system strip, to provide a holistic approach, and at avoiding the use of standard solutions, taking each area as a unique and distinctive

A method for assessing the vitality potential of urban areas. The case study of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, Italy
Vitality and Urbanity emerge as key goals of strategies for urban sustainable development as necessary prerequisites for varied and prosperous cities. Vitality and urbanity are characteristics that emerge from the diversity of urban public spaces activities and have an impact on a people’s sense of place. The proposed research examines the built environment components that impact urbanity and vitality and develops an analytic method for quantifying the potential of urban form to promote urbanity and vitality. The research investigates four aspects: (i) the conceptualization of urbanity
and vitality; (ii) the identification of factors affecting urbanity and vitality; (iii) the definition of indicators and protocols; (iv) the application of the proposed analytic method for measuring the vitality potential of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari (MCC), in Sardinia, Italy. This study underlines the relevance of combining space syntax and spatial analysis techniques in order to address four issues concerning sustainable urban development: quantitative description of urban-friendly conditions, identification of spatial manifestations of social and economic processes, understanding of criticalities, and formulation of policies and strategies for reinforcing vibrant urban spaces. Thus, the proposed analytic method contributes to the application of the Geodesign paradigm to the urban realm by supporting the understanding of the conditions affecting the vitality and urbanity of the built environment
