No full textIl dialogo ecumenico tra le diverse confessioni cristiane vive oggi – nell’età della cosiddetta 'post-secolarizzazione' – una stagione di rinnovato vigore. Il libro – il quarto della serie promossa dal Centro di documentazione metodista – analizza varie teorie e prassi connesse ai concetti di “ecumenismo” e “cattolicità” partendo dalla convinzione che per comprendere più a fondo il presente sia indispensabile la conoscenza delle dinamiche e delle traiettorie storiche che hanno origine nel passato. I saggi raccolti nel volume indagano, con diverse prospettive metodologiche, momenti di un arco temporale che va dalle origini cristiane all’attuale pontificato di Francesco. Il metodismo, denominazione cristiana innervata da motivi ecumenici fin dai suoi primordi, è una realtà capace di apportare originali spunti di ricerca e riflessione ed è qui oggetto di specifici approfondimenti.The ecumenical dialogue between different Christian confessions is nowadays living an era of renewed interest: this volume analyzes various theories and practices connected to the ideas of ‘ecumenism’ and ‘catholicity’, investigating some cases in a time span that from Christian origins arrives to pope Francis. No full textSaying 40 of the Gospel of Thomas contains some lexical peculiarities that invite to investigate its meaning and relationship with the parallel texts: it could contribute to show the self-representation of the group of Jesus' followers that this gospel intended to convey. The symbolic content of the saying (expressed by the metaphor of an 'unsound grapevine') is usually identified in the criticism of 'Pharisees' and Jewish practices, but it could represent the trace of the will to oppose other groups of Jesus' followers. This article analyzes logion 40 relating it to l. 32, to Matt 15:13, John 15:1-8, and other texts (especially from the Hebrew scriptures), and focusing on the occurrences - in Greek and Coptic - of some key terms. It also deals with the issue of the relationship between Th and John, and between the Thomasine and the Johannine groups

No full textIl volume raccoglie saggi che indagano in chiave multidisciplinare figure, eventi e contesti appartenenti alla complessa e plurale realtà del protestantesimo nell’età contemporanea, dal Risorgimento all’attualità. Entro scenari che comprendono l’Italia, l’Irlanda, il continente africano e gli Stati Uniti d’America, si delineano i rapporti tra determinate tradizioni protestanti e diverse sfide di ordine sia teoretico che pratico: dal cammino ecumenico tra le Chiese irlandesi nel periodo dei Troubles alle molteplici dinamiche dell’emigrazione e dell’integrazione, con il ruolo di mediazione delle comunità religiose; dai significati socio-politici assunti da dottrine ed esperienze religiose al dilemma della compatibilità tra princìpi cristiani e giustificazione della guerra; dal legame tra riforma etico-politica e riforma religiosa nell’Italia risorgimentale all’impatto sociale e culturale dei movimenti evangelici nel Mezzogiorno, fino alla teologia politica soggiacente al dibattito sulle Intese tra le Chiese valdesi e metodiste e la Repubblica italiana. Il volume, tramite le ricerche inedite presentate, contribuisce ad aprire nuovi percorsi di studi sul protestantesimo nazionale e internazionale, nonché a fornire spunti per il sempre più rilevante tema del pluralismo religioso.This volume collects essays that investigate, from a multidisciplinary perspective, figures, events and contexts belonging to the complex and plural reality of Protestantism in the contemporary age, from the Risorgimento onwards. Here the relations between certain Protestant traditions and various "challenges" of both theoretical and practical order are delineated, within scenarios that include Italy, Ireland, the African continent, and the United States of America. The essays deal with issues such as: the ecumenical dialogues between the Irish Churches during the "Troubles"; the multiple dynamics of emigration and integration, considering the role of religious communities; the socio-political interpretations of some religious doctrines and experiences; the Christian doctrine of war; the relation between religion and politics during the Risorgimento; the social role of Evangelical movements in Southern Italy; the political theology involved in the agreements between Italian State and Waldensian and Methodist Italian Churches. The volume presents new researches, and aims to open up new research paths on national and international Protestantism, as well as on religious pluralism

No full textErnesto Buonaiuti ebbe feconde relazioni con gli evangelici italiani: collaborazioni significative iniziano almeno dai primi anni Venti, mentre dal 1932 si apre una nuova fase caratterizzata da rapporti con specifiche Chiese e dall’assunzione di determinati ruoli istituzionali (in particolare, la Chiesa metodista wesleyana gli affidò una cattedra e il pulpito). Questo contributo si focalizza sui rapporti di Buonaiuti con metodisti e valdesi, ricostruendo anche le relazioni con le organizzazioni giovanili connesse in vari modi a queste denominazioni (fu dapprima soprattutto attraverso queste organizzazioni “ecumeniche” che Buonaiuti entrò in contatto con il mondo evangelico). La trattazione si conclude con la ricostruzione della concezione che Buonaiuti aveva del metodismo e del valdismo.Ernesto Buonaiuti had fruitful relations with the Italian evangelicals: significant collaborations began at least from the early Twenties, and since 1932 a new phase started, characterized by relationships with specific Churches and the acceptance of certain official appointments (the Wesleyan Methodist Church gave him a professorship and the pulpit). This paper focuses on Buonaiuti’s relations with Methodists and Waldensians, analyzing also his contacts with the youth associations connected with these denominations (at first, Buonaiuti got in contact with the Evangelicals mainly through these ecumenical organizations). This study also attempts to reconstruct Buonaiuti’s concept of Methodism and the Waldensian movement
Logion 83 and the “Image” in the Gospel of Thomas: Relationships with Some Pauline and Early Christian Texts
No full textIn the Gospel of Thomas, four logia contain the (theologically crucial) image motif. This article analyzes the divisive l. 83, in particular, examining the various translations and interpretations, then providing a reading of the text, relating it to the other logia about the image in Th, but above all to Pauline, deutero/pseudo-Pauline, and Johannine texts. Thus, the study deals with the relationship between Th and Paul, an issue that is still almost unexplored. The article aims to show that l. 83 refers not only to anthropological and protological issues, but also (and significantly) to christological ones. The text could be understood without relating it to Gnosticism; it seems to interact with some Pauline and Johannine motifs, and to evoke Gen 1, but also reflections on Christ as “Image,” connecting eschatology and protology. This is not to claim that the whole Th would be dependent on those texts: Th is a layered text, in which early (and/or independent) logia are juxtaposed to other later ones. The logia about the image could fit into trajectories developed by other early Christian traditions

The Armenian Genocide in the Italian Protestant Press (1915-1918). The Distinctive Viewpoint of a Minority
No full textL’articolo indaga la ricezione del genocidio armeno nelle fonti protestanti italiane coeve (1915-1918), in particolare nella stampa periodica delle Chiese metodiste, battiste, valdese, e nelle riviste culturali non-denominazionali. Si tratta di un caso di studio che mostra come una minoranza religiosa ha percepito quanto accaduto ad un’altra minoranza. La ricerca rivela che i protestanti italiani adottarono una prospettiva peculiare, distintiva, sul genocidio armeno, se comparata con le altre fonti periodiche italiane dell’epoca (sia cattoliche che nella stampa nazionale). Tale prospettiva si connetteva all’autorappresentazione della minoranza evangelica italiana. Ad esempio, i periodici metodisti e battisti – in particolare – mostrano spesso un’ottica controversistica, insistendo su un argomento condiviso con parte della stampa nazionale: i “silenzi del papa” sui crimini di guerra degli Imperi Centrali. Il genocidio armeno diviene allora uno dei casi in cui i protestanti italiani potevano sottolineare la propria posizione, in connessione con quella dell’Intesa e nelle sue differenze con quella vaticana (per come questa veniva interpretata). La caratteristica dei valdesi era invece quella della profonda empatia, e quasi dell’identificazione con gli armeni (esplicitata in una fonte del 1896, al tempo dei massacri hamidiani), alla luce della comune esperienza di vittime di un piano sistematico di sterminio (per quanto riguarda i valdesi, subito soprattutto nei secoli XVI-XVII).This article analyzes the reception of the Armenian Genocide in the contemporary Italian Protestant sources (1915-1918), mainly Methodist, Baptist, Waldensian, and non-denominational journals and magazines. It is a case study that shows how a religious minority perceived (and reflected upon) what happened to another minority. This research reveals that Italian Protestants had a “distinctive viewpoint” on the Armenian Genocide, if compared with other contemporary Italian press (Catholic magazines and national newspapers). That perspective was connected to the self-representation of the Evangelical minority in Italy. For example, the Methodist and Baptist magazines – in particular – often represented a controversialist (anti-Vatican) perspective, emphasizing an argument shared with part of the national press: that of the “pope’s silence” on the war crimes of the Central Powers. The Armenian Genocide, hence, became one of the instances where the Italian Protestants could highlight their own stance, in its connection with the Entente’s one and in its difference from the Vatican’s one (according to the way they interpreted it). The distinctive feature of the Waldensians was that of deep empathy, and almost of their identification with the Armenians (this is explicit in a source of 1896, at the time of the Hamidian massacres), in the light of the common experience of having suffered a systematic extermination plan (for Waldensians, especially in 16th-17th centuries)
