    Guillaume Lamy et l'âme matérielle

Guillaume Lamy and the material soul. Guillaume Lamy, author of several medico-philosophical works, defended an epicurean and anti-finalistic philosophy, which led him to reject new medical ideas. His definition of the fiery material soul in his 6th Discours anatomique was reproduced in several 18th-century works, but his works do not seem to have played a vital role in the development of materialistic thought. Only La Mettrie, who preferred a different explanation of intellectual functions, refers to him. Unlike Willis and Duncan, with whom his ideas show some similarity, Lamy's explanations of the functioning of the brain are theoretical, not based on experimental evidence and thus were ignored by the vitalists. The relationship between medicine and materialism can be seen to be more complex than is often thought.Thomson Ann. Guillaume Lamy et l'âme matérielle. In: Dix-huitième Siècle, n°24, 1992. Properties of Saturn kilometric radiation measured within its source region

    No full text
On 17 October 2008, the Cassini spacecraft crossed the southern sources of Saturn kilometric radiation (SKR), while flying along high-latitude nightside magnetic field lines. In situ measurements allowed us to characterize for the first time the source region of an extra-terrestrial auroral radio emission. Using radio, magnetic field and particle observations, we show that SKR sources are surrounded by a hot tenuous plasma, in a region of upward field-aligned currents. Magnetic field lines supporting radio sources map a continuous, high-latitude and spiral-shaped auroral oval observed on the dawnside, consistent with enhanced auroral activity. Investigating the Cyclotron Maser Instability (CMI) as a mechanism responsible for SKR generation, we find that observed cutoff frequencies are consistent with radio waves amplified perpendicular to the magnetic field by hot (6 to 9 keV) resonant electrons, measured locally. Global Governance: An Agenda for Europe. Bruegel policy brief 2006/07, December 2006

    No full text
Summary. The system of multilateral rules and institutions that is currently responsible for global economic governance is in a sorry state. In the coming months, Europe will be faced with important decisions about the future of this system. The EU should not wait before proposing and initiating reforms. Europe has a large stake in the multilateral system and has considerable experience in designing effective institutions, making it well placed to lead a reform agenda. Moreover, the legitimacy of the EU in the eyes of its citizens depends on its ability to tackle the big issues that really matter for the future of the global economy

Generalized characteristics for finite entropy solutions of Burgers’ equation

    No full text
We prove the existence of generalized characteristics for weak, not necessarily entropic, solutions of Burgers’ equation [Formula presented] whose entropy productions are signed measures. Such solutions arise in connection with large deviation principles for the hydrodynamic limit of interacting particle systems. The present work allows to remove a technical trace assumption in a recent result by the two first authors about the L2 stability of entropic shocks among such non-entropic solutions. The proof relies on the Lagrangian representation of a solution's hypograph, recently constructed by the third author. In particular, we prove a decomposition formula for the entropy flux across a given hypersurface, which is valid for general multidimensional scalar conservation laws

Genève, Bibliothèque de Genève, Ms. lat. 101 : Cicero, Orations

One of the ancient authors best known in the Middle Ages doubtlessly was Cicero. Some of his speeches - the Orationes - were rediscovered by humanists, as is attested by this copy. The manuscript contains 27 of Cicero’s speeches, written in a round Italian humanistic script. It begins with a miniature depicting a group of speakers in a discussion (f. 1r), painted by Péronet Lamy, an illuminator who is documented from 1432 until 1453 and who worked primarily for Amadeus VIII, the Duke of Savoy. It is likely that Péronet Lamy carried out this decoration when he was at the Council of Basel as part of the Duke’s entourage. Also present there was Martin le Franc (1408-1461), ducal secretary and author of the Champion des Dames and the Estrif de fortune et de vertu; according to a scraped entry (f. 290r), he came into possession of this manuscript. Thereafter it belonged to Germain Colladon (back pastedown), a fellow student of John Calvin, who fled to Geneva in 1550. Around 1615, one of his daughters-in-law sold the manuscript, together with Ms. lat. 53, to the Bibliothèque de Genève.Online Since: 2018-03-2

De S. Isaaci Ninvitae Vita, Scriptis et Doctrina: Accedunt Isaaci Tres Integri Sermones

    No full text
The present work is the doctoral thesis of J.-B. Chabot (1860-1947), who studied under Lamy and would go on to publish and translate many other Syriac texts. This volume is concerned with the life and work of the widely influential Church of the East author Isaac of Nineveh (late 7th cent.), part of whose writings would eventually reach many other languages and churches. Chabot discusses the available data for Isaac’s life, orthodoxy, writings, and ascetic system; the final part includes extracts from his works with Latin translation. The book is concluded with the Syriac text and Latin translations of three of Isaac’s sermons edited from British Museum manuscripts. This groundbreaking work on an important author in the Syriac tradition continues to merit study. The book is concluded with the Syriac text and Latin translations of three of Isaac’s sermons edited from British Museum manuscripts
