Superuse e upcycling dei materiali di scarto in architettura: progetto e sperimentazione
Il programma di ricerca sull’applicazione dell’economia circolare all’ambiente costruito, la cui urgenza è conclamata a livello comunitario e nazionale, lavora su due approcci complementari: riuso (superuse) e riciclo (upcycling). Il primo, teorico ed applicato a un caso pilota, con uno dei primi tentativi di trasporre all’Italia il processo di scouting degli scarti per la creazione di harvest map a supporto del progetto. Il secondo, con la start up Atlante Inerti Project che, con fondi dell’EIT, sperimenta un inedito uso di aggregati riciclati per la produzione di manufatti in CLS per l’arredo urbano con stampa additiva 3D in sabbia e prefabbricazione con vibro-compressione, caratterizzando conglomerati dalle prestazioni convincenti di interesse per ulteriori applicazioni in edilizia.The research programme on the implementation of circular economy in the built environment, whose urgency is acknowledged both at national and at EU level, works on two complementary approaches: reuse (superuse) and recycling (upcycling). The first, theoretical and applied to a pilot case, is one of the first attempts to transpose to Italy the waste materials scouting and harvest mapping process as part of the design project. Resource Matter Material. Reuse as a technical option for sustainable design
The proposed contribution, in response to the EU objectives on Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy, offers a detailed overview of the most up-to-date international experiences on the reuse of materials in architecture, illustrating in particular the peculiarities of the practices and context conditions on the closed-loop use of materials in the building sector in Italy. The objective of the present study, in particular, is to examine the feasibility at national level of the reuse strategy, in continuity with the practices constantly carried out in our country from antiquity to the industrial revolution, and to verify the current applicability of superuse (reuse) and upcycling (recycling) practices outside an occasional logic, as reliable and replicable technical options at the supply chain level. The reference framework for reuse practices is therefore delineated, highlighting the innovations from the theoretical, methodological and disciplinary point of view, outlining an articulated framework of the most up-to-date international experiences on the topic, with the aim of promoting the dissemination of international best practices. research, planning and construction on superuse and upcycling practices in architecture

Criticity Mapping and Integration Quantity Evaluation of Solar Installations in Mediterranean Heritage Territories
The study aims at evaluating the applicability of the LESO-Quality-Sensitivity-Visibility (QSV) method for the assessment of active solar installations on Mediterranean architectural heritage. To this purpose, 10 significative case studies with the integration of photovoltaic and solar thermal system have been evaluated using this method. This assessment is compared with the results of expert enquires realized on the same case studies by the Heritage Authorities, to define potentialities, limits, and possible modifications. Finally, the integration of the two methodologies with international policies allows the definition of an articulated set of formal characteristics that solar systems in heritage contexts should have. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024
Critical issues hindering a widespread construction and demolition waste (CDW) recycling practice in EU countries and actions to undertake. The stakeholder’s perspective
Construction and demolition waste (CDW) reuse and recycling represents a key point to enhance resource efficiency in construction sector and to reduce the huge volumes of extracted materials, energy consumption and waste production, which make this sector the largest resource consuming and waste producing one. Even if several alternatives for raw materials substitution have been widely investigated from a technical and economic point, several critical issues hinder a wide substitution rate of virgin raw materials with CDW valorised streams slowing down the circular economy transition. The aim of this research was to individuate and discuss these issues hindering a widespread CDW recycling practice in order to individuate actions to undertake, that can support policies and action plans. The investigation was conducted through desk research and a survey, through the administration of questionnaires and more focused guided interviews. Difficulties and barriers have been analysed and suggestions to improve waste recycling and reuse have been proposed. The state of implementation of policies, actions and best practices such as Green Public Procurement (GPP); b) End of Waste (EoW) criteria; c) pre-demolition audit; d) selective demolition; e) landfill tax; f) tax on raw material extraction; g) traceability system; h) take-back centres, have been examined and discussed. Finally, ideas and suggestions aimed at directing the correct implementation of policies, initiatives and action plans, starting from the successful experiences of some countries that could be effectively transferred in other ones and, trying to take advantage of the difficulties encountered in the implementation process, have been proposed
