“The Standardization of Communication Checklists as a Patient Safety Communication Tool in a Children’s Emergency Department”

    No full text
A key factor in the vulnerabilities of risks for communication errors during pediatric emergency is a lack of standardized communication tools (refs) in accountability to patient safety. Such tools are critical in the regulatory statutes of clinical practice that underlies the communication of interventions regarding the patient (Situation), the clinical setting (Background), the issues (Assessment) and interventions during admission and/or transfer (Recommendation). Thereby, the elements of Situation, Background, Assessment and Recommendation, known as SBAR technique in the patient safety field, constitute crucial content and process dimensions in effective communications. Although SBAR is known conceptually in the literature, research is sparse on its applicability as a communication tool to decrease risks, particularly in a high vulnerability patient care context, one of which is pediatric emergencies. Furthermore, the association of SBAR to the regulatory practice of relational communications during pediatric emergencies is unclear. Given these gaps in nursing knowledge and practice, this study will investigate the efficacy of SBAR as a communication tool of patient safety by demonstrating its relevance to regulatory practice in the standardization of relational communications during pediatric emergencies. The overall purpose of this project is to apply and validate the SBAR technique as a communication tool and evaluate its outcomes, which will provide evidence of its relevance to regulatory practice during triage of children in the emergency department

We present this commentary to discuss the main European initiatives and issues regarding education for health professionals, specifi cally nurses, both to stimulate international debate and to learn more about what is happening in this fi eld in other continents. Th e topic discussed in this article is of extreme interest for nurses, especially during this particular phase in the development of education of health professionals, because it needs to change its paradigm, which is currently focused on problem-solving competences, and start looking at building systemic competence

Commentary on: Factors influencing foot care behaviour among patients with diabetes: An integrative literature review by Woo MWJ, CUI J (2023)

The review by Woo et al. reports on factors influencing behaviour in the care of the diabetic foot, wich are common in diabetic patients and have a high risk of infection and amputation. To improve patient's knowledge and education on foot care, this commentary proposes the Barrows cards as an innovative user-friendly educational method. Conclusion and implications for profession and patient care: adapting these cards to adult diabetic patients could prevent future complications, improving quality of life and reduce the risks associated with diabetes.
