No full text
Real Estate Managemen

The influence of an integrative approach of empowerment on the creative performance for employees

No full text
In recent years, a notable amount of studies have focused on the significant effect of the creative performance of employees has on the overall effectiveness of organizations. Therefore, researchers and scholars have suggested different management practices that influence the creative performance of employees. In the same vein, this study reviewed literature relevant to various management practices that influence creative performance, specifically, employee empowerment approaches. The study discussed the nature of the three major approaches of empowerment that have been examined in the literature: empowering leadership, empowerment climate and psychological empowerment, and the influence of these approaches on the creative performance of employees. Accordingly, the researcher combined the three empowerment approaches, building a theoretical framework based on linking empowering leadership to creative performance through empowerment climate and psychological empowerment, in order to build an integrative approach to empowerment. The researcher has distributed two different questionnaires to Jordanian banks in order to test the model of the study. One of the questionnaires has been designed to measure empowering leadership behaviors and practices, as well as measuring the empowerment climate and the psychological empowerment of employees in the Jordanian banking sector. The second questionnaire was designed to measure how managers perceive the creative performance of their employees. Accordingly, 500 matched questionnaires have been distributed to employees and their managers; 412 of these were matched and applicable for the analysis in the research. Several exploratory factor analyses tests have been conducted to ensure the validity of the scales. The results have shown that all adopted scales were loaded according to the original scales and maintained their dimensions; however, some items have been eliminated from the scales due to cross loading. Overall, the results were consistent with those found in the empowerment and creativity literature. Subsequently, correlation matrix tests were conducted between each new structural factor, in order to examine any possible relationship between an integrative approach of empowerment and creative performance. The results have supported all the hypotheses of the study. Afterwards, multiple regression tests were conducted to investigate the ability of an integrative approach of empowerment to predict the outcome of creative performance. The results have demonstrated that empowering leadership has a positive influence on both the empowerment climate and psychological empowerment. Similarly, the empowerment climate has a positive influence on psychological empowerment. Lastly, psychological empowerment has demonstrated a positive influence on creative performance. Furthermore, mediation analysis was used to test the model; the results demonstrated that psychological empowerment and the empowerment climate completely mediate the relationship between empowering leadership and creative performance. To illustrate, empowering leadership has a direct and an indirect influence on creative performance; however, empowering leadership has a demonstrably greater effect on creative performance through an empowerment climate and psychological empowerment (Indirect Influence). According to these results and findings, the researcher has provided theoretical and practical implications and recommendations for future researchers to take into consideration as to the importance of an integrative approach of empowerment and its effects on the creative performance of employees.</p

It is essential to review and develop a system of water control structures and canals that can be used to manage high-flow discharges and the flood control plan requirement to modify the system's capacity. Al-Ramadi Project System is considered one of the main flood control projects on the Euphrates River within Anbar Governorate, Western Iraq. This study will focus on Al-Majjarah Canal and Regulator, which is part of Al-Ramadi Project and has the function of a link canal between Al-Habbaniyah and Al-Razazza lakes, and describe the capacity of the canal under typical operating conditions and during floods. The study used HEC-RAS 6.1 software to run a numerical model to simulate this canal. According to previous research studies near the research region on the Euphrates River, for the main canal, the roughness coefficient was taken at 0.026, and for the flood plain, it was taken at 0.03. The same parameter value was applied to Al-Majjarah Canal. Due to the study region's similar geology and nature. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis was made of the roughness coefficient and its influence on the water surface elevation for the canal. The model result indicated in the current situation of Al-Majjarah Canal can pass a flow rate of 1300 m3/s when Al-Razazza Lake is at an average water level that has been approved by the Ministry of Water Resources at 32.02 m.a.m.s.l.. If the water level in Al-Razazza Lake is in the semi-filled position of 40 m.a.m.s.l., it causes floods for the canal because the water level rises above the banks of the canal at the last kilometer from the canal, even when passing a few discharges through the canal. Accordingly, it is not possible to safely pass the flow rate for a flood wave with a 500-year return period predicted by the "Study of Strategy for Water and Land Resources in Iraq (2014)", which is 2000 m3/s for this canal, without making modifications to the expansion of Al-Majjarah Regulator by adding additional gates, expanding the entrance and exit of the Regulator, reshaping and expanding some cross-sections, and raising some of the banks for the canal. The above-mentioned modification were applied for the purpose of passing the expected discharge from the canal, while maintaining a freeboard of 1 m between the water surface and the canal banks

Innovation in a large scale agile organisation: A case study of ABN AMRO

No full text
Agile methods seem to be the answer for today’s turbulent industries, and with it roots in software development, coincides neatly with the increasingly digital world we live in. ABN AMRO also decided to implement a large scale agile framework tailored to their company. Agile methodologies are known to work well at small scale and in an IT context, however at ABN AMRO they’ve implemented it for over 6000 employees from both business and IT departments. Unsurprisingly ABN AMRO faces challenges within this agile organisation. One area in which they’re struggling is managing innovation in a way that aligns with the flow of the tailored and scaled agile organisation. The objective was therefore; To design solution that better aligns innovation processes with the flow of the tailored and scale agile landscape. In addition, literature on large scale tailored agile transformation and innovation management within financial services firms is scarce. Both areas are relevant, however no research was found that combined these topics. Therefor in this thesis we attempt to find challenges for innovation management in a large scale tailored agile framework. In order to both find an answer to this question and help ABN AMRO the challenge was approached from two different streams. Firstly, a revelatory single-case study on ABN AMRO’s tailored agile framework served to understand how they tailored agile at such a large scale and what the challenges were. Secondly, through semi structured interviews with 18 ABN AMRO employees, their innovation management efforts were investigated as well as the challenges they experience with it. Both the challenges from a large scale agile perspective and the company-wide innovation management were merged into a set of six new challenges; “governance on innovation in the agile organisation”, “deficiency of exploration skills”, “getting innovation on the backlog”, “Lack of clear guidance & leadership on innovation”, “Dependencies & Limited Autonomy”, and “Organisational and Cultural legacy”. Based on these challenges a new design challenge was posited which was to design a solution that stimulates ownership and awareness amongst idea owners in the grid landscape towards customer problems and needs. This solution needed to provide clear guidance to enable autonomous and successful realisation of these customer centric innovations in the product and system oriented agile organisation. As a solution to the design challenge and in order to help ABN AMRO with their innovation management efforts, the “User Needs Integration Canvas” was created which is an innovation process that focuses on bridging the gap between customer needs and the complex nature of ABN AMRO’s agile organisation. This study further finds that agile methods don’t cover the innovation process in full, and thus extra efforts and support should go towards managing incremental innovation, the front-end of innovation specifically. In addition traditional financial service providers carry cultural legacy, lack innovation legacy and explorative competences. The role of the individual, with their skills, mindset and behaviour are imperative in in the journey towards a nimbler and more innovative financial service provider. There is no shortcut in becoming an innovative company, whilst a large scale agile framework is a step in the right direction, still a lot of time, effort and patience is needed beyond this stepStrategic Product Desig

Organisational Culture and Organisational Citizenship Behaviour: The Dark Side of Organisational Politics

Get PDF
Background and Purpose: Organisational politics can have a substantial negative effect on employees’ performance, however many organisations still do not pay attention to this organisational behaviour. In our study, we aim to examine the relationship between organisational culture and organisational citizenship behaviour through how employees perceive political behaviour within organisations. Methods: Convenience sampling technique has been employed, quantitative data were collected from 532 employees in the Jordan banking industry via online surveys. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was employed to test the hypotheses of the study. Results: Analyses showed that organisational culture within the banking industry has an effect on how employees perceive political behaviour. A negative perception of political behaviour by employees, in turn, has a negative influence on employees’ citizenship behaviour. These findings answer previous calls to investigate the destructive effect of organisational politics on employee outcomes. Conclusion: Organisations should pay more attention to the destructive effect of organisational politics and try to minimise such behaviour. Organisational citizenship behaviour, in contrast, benefits organisational performance, and the enhancement of this is recommended through the implementation of more effective policies and strategies.Ozadje in namen: Organizacijska politika lahko bistveno negativno vpliva na uspešnost zaposlenih, vendar številne organizacije še vedno niso pozorne na to možnost organizacijskega vedenja. V naši študiji želimo raziskati razmerje med organizacijsko kulturo in obnašanjem v dobrobit organizacije upoštevajoč, kako zaposleni dojemajo politično vedenje v organizacijah. V nasprotju s tem, vedenje v dobrobit organizaciji koristi organizacijski uspešnosti, zato ga je treba izboljšati z izvajanjem učinkovitejših politik in strategij
