    Swahili Literature into Italian: The Challenge of Translating Abdilatif Abdalla's Poems

    The considerations on the translation of Swahili poetry which are developed in this article originate from a work (carried out with Roberto Gaudioso) devoted to the Italian translation of selected verses by two contemporary poets, Euphrase Kezilahabi and Abdilatif Abdalla. After providing further details about the publication project within the framework of which the translations of Abdilatif Abdalla’s poems were conceived of and accomplished, the focus will be on the textual challenges and the main translational strategies that were adopted in this work, which were based on some stylistic features of his poetry, i.e. the language variety and the prosody. Finally, by drawing from Umberto Eco’s semiotic and aesthetic reflections on translation (2003), the discourse will attempt to show that the stylistic choices adopted by an author intermingle indissolubly with other aspects of that author’s creative work in constructing the text’s whole as it is encountered by the reader/listener

    The present article investigates Shafi Adam Shafi’s Vuta n’kuvute (The tug of war, 1999), a historical novel which is set in Zanzibar in the late colonial period. Textual analysis highlights how the novel’s linguistic and stylistic peculiarities intermingle inextricably with the contents in constructing the text as a whole, as they are loaded with meanings and symbolic implications which help in the reconstruction of many aspects of the work in connection to the literary, socio-cultural and political context of contemporary Tanzania

    The development of Swahili literature is profoundly marked by the dual nature of this African language. On the one hand, it is the mother tongue of the Swahili communities, located mainly on the coast of Kenya and Tanzania and on the adjacent islands, and on the other hand, it is a vehicular language that spread to large inland regions of East and Central Africa, initially through the caravan trade that flourished in the 19th century, then due to missionary and colonial activities, and after independence thanks to the language policies of the new nations. A local, national and transnational language, therefore, and a language that embraces different religious worlds, from the Islam of coastal communities and Islamised inland areas to Christianity, whose evangelisation in mainland regions was mainly based on Swahili. This composite literary universe will be outlined in the essay, highlighting some theoretical and critical points

    Corso MOOC (Video Intensive) di introduzione alla lingua e cultura swahili, frutto della collaborazione tra L'Orientale e Federica Web Learning, il Centro di Ateneo per l’innovazione, la sperimentazione e la diffusione della didattica multimediale dell’Università di Napoli Federico II. Il corso, articolato in dieci lezioni e liberalmente accessibile sul sito di Federica Web Learning, è rivolto a tutte le persone interessate a scoprire la bellezza della lingua, cultura e letteratura swahili. Obiettivo del MOOC è offrire agli utenti le nozioni introduttive sulla lingua swahili, insieme a espressioni di uso quotidiano (saluti, presentazioni) e frasi basilari che consentiranno di interagire in modo semplice in situazioni concrete, ad esempio al mercato, sui mezzi di trasporto o al ristorante. Il corso propone inoltre un percorso per cominciare a conoscere la cultura dei paesi di lingua swahili nei suoi diversi aspetti, in particolare la cucina, l'abbigliamento, le tradizioni verbali, la musica e la letteratura.
