THE STRUCTURE OF MORAL CONCERNS IN ADOLESCENCE: DIMENSIONALITY AND PSYCHOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF THE MORAL FOUNDATIONS QUESTIONNAIRE IN A SAMPLE OF ITALIAN ADOLESCENTS
Research on whether the five moral foundations identified by the Moral Foundations Theory ade-quately describe the structure of moral concerns in adolescence is in its early stages and has evidenced results in contrast with research on adults. The present study aims to contribute by investigating the structure and the psychometric properties of the Moral Foundations Questionnaire (MFQ) in a sample of 925 Italian high school students. Subjects completed the MFQ and other measures expected to be related with moral foundations. A confirmatory factor analysis evidenced support for the 5-factor model, while internal consistency, stability, and validity proved to be satisfactory. Finally, we found no age difference while gender differences emerged in line with the literature. Our study concludes that we can use the five moral foundations to describe moral concerns also in adolescence, and that the MFQ is an adequate measure of adolescents’ endorsement of these foundations

The Impact of Personal Values, Gender Stereotypes, and School Climate on Homophobic Bullying: a Multilevel Analysis
Introduction: Schools are among the most homophobic social contexts, where students who do not conform to gender norms are at high risk of stigma and discrimination. Method: Using a multilevel approach, the aim of the current was to examine whether adolescents’ engagement in homophobic bullying behavior was associated with personal values and stereotyped victim-blaming attributions at individual level, and perceptions of school as a community and frequency of teachers’ reaction to bullying incidents at classroom level. Data were collected in 2010. The sample consisted of 2718 Italian middle and high school students (53.2% females; mean age = 15.36, SD =.85) from 144 classrooms. Results: Results showed that self-transcendence values reduced the risk of engaging in homophobic bullying, whereas both self-enhancement values and stereotyped victim-blaming attributions were positively associated with homophobic bullying. At classroom level, only negative perceptions of school as a community had a unique positive contribution on homophobic bullying, over and above other individual and contextual factors. Two cross-level interactions were found, indicating that self-transcendence values had a significant effect in decreasing homophobic bullying in classrooms where teacher support was perceived as low, whereas stereotyped victim-blaming attributions had a significant effect in increasing homophobic bullying in classrooms where teacher support was perceived as high. Conclusion: These findings provide further support to the social-ecological perspective as a useful guiding framework for understanding the complexity of factors predicting homophobic bullying. Policy Implications: Efforts should be made to develop clear anti-bullying school policies explicitly dealing with the issue of homophobic bullying
Rappresentazioni di sé, rappresentazioni genitoriali e prevenzione del rischio psico-sociale in adolescenza
Psychological counselling services at a Southern Italian university: utilization rates and characteristics of university students asking help
AIM: To assess the utilization rate of a university psychological counselling center in Southern Italy, a retrospective analysis of data collected from September 2018 to December 2023 was conducted. METHOD: Data were gathered through an online questionnaire, which was distributed to students seeking psychological help (SH) from University Counselling Service (UCS) at their first contact with the service. RESULTS: The frequency of contacts with UCS (n=639) and the number of SH students who received psychological counselling (n=503) significantly differed over a 6-year period, with the highest number of interviews delivered after the Covid-19 pandemic (contacts: χ2=84.814, p<.0001; interventions: χ2=25.161, p<.0001). More than 40% of the SH students were medical students, followed by approximately 32% of students attending psychological courses. Differences were found across years in the type of course attended by SH students (χ2=54.323, p<.0001) and in dropout rates (χ2=24.427, p<.0001). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The significantly higher demand for psychological help confirms the increased psychological distress in university students. The shift to online modalities and the broader dissemination of mental health literacy, particularly in the aftermath of the Covid-19 outbreak, may explain the significant increase in service utilization rates. These findings highlight the need for timely interventions to address the needs of SH students
