He served in the U.S. Navy 1919-1920, and later as chairman of the Reserve Forces Policy Board at the U.S. Department of Defense 1953-1955. He was the President of the University of New Hampshire 1948-1950, and from 1951 through 1961 he was the President of the American Council on Education. He then became a consultant at the University of New Hampshire 1968-1976. He was the recipient of 23 honorary degrees
