Bio-fuels, wait a minute

    No full text
The ethical relevance of this topic is clear. Bio-fuels show great promise as a sustainable energy source, but there are also worries that its production will be at the expense of food security, especially for people in developing countries. The author defends the unconventional position that the first generation bio-fuels is not sustainable and that the Netherlands should focus exclusively on second generation bio-fuels, which are made from non-food crops. One could argue about this and the jury suspects that there are enough people to be found at TU Delft who would disagree. However, the jury applauds the fact that the author takes a clear moral standpoint and - even more important - tries to give a plausible argumentation to support it. Furthermore, the author shows himself to be technically well informed

Some investigations concerning the CTMC and the ODE model derived from Bio-PEPA

Bio-PEPA is a recently defined language for the modelling and analysis of biochemical networks. It supports an abstract style of modelling, in which discrete levels of concentration within a species are considered instead of individual molecules. A finer granularity for the system corresponds to a smaller concentration step size and therefore to a greater number of concentration levels. This style of model is amenable to a variety of different analysis techniques, including numerical analysis based on a CMTC with states reflecting the levels of concentration.

In this paper we present a formal definition of the CTMC with levels derived from a Bio-PEPA system. Furthermore we investigate the relationship between this CTMC and the system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) derived from the same model. Using Kurtz's theorem, we show that the set of ODEs derived from the Bio-PEPA model is able to capture the limiting behaviour of the CTMC obtained from the same system. Finally, we define an empirical methodology to find the granularity of the Bio-PEPA system for which the ODE and the CTMC with levels are in a good agreement. The proposed definition is based on a notion of distance between the two models. We demonstrate our approach on a model of the Repressilator, a simple biochemical network with oscillating behaviour.</p&gt

    Steve Reich : a bio-bibliography

    No full text
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Steve Reich was considered a fringe experimentalist. His work consisted largely of repeating, slowly changing patterns unlike either the serialism or the aleatory that predominated at that time. Today, however, Reich is one of the most prominent and celebrated contemporary composers, one about whom the scholarly and popular literature offers an assortment of critical, historical, and analytical perspectives. Author D.J. Hoek's bio-bibliography serves as an essential guide to this literature, comprehensively surveying Reich's life and work. Included are details of all of Reich's compositions: dates, instrumentation, premiere performances, and publishers; a discography listing all commercial recordings of the composer's oeuvre; and an annotated bibliography of publications in English, French, German, and Italian. The Reich scholar or aficionado could not find a more thorough encapsulation of his brilliant career

Bio-Based Electrospun Nanofiber of Polyhydroxyalkanoate Modified with Black Soldier Fly’s Pupa Shell with Antibacterial and Cytocompatibility Properties

We report on the antibacterial and cytocompatibility properties of a bio-based electrospun polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) nanofiber modified with Black Soldier Fly (BSF) pupa shell. A 5–50 μm chitosan powder (CSP) was made by grinding BSF pupa shell in water, acid, alkali. CSP was combined with PHA in an electrospinning machine using a biaxial feed method and manufactured into a 50–500 nm antibacterial nanofiber. We studied the morphology, mechanical properties, water absorption, and antibacterial properties of the electrospun PHA/CSP nanofiber. To improve the fiber’s compatibility and functionality, acrylic acid (AA) was grafted onto PHA. The resulting tensile properties and morphological characterizations indicated enhanced adhesion between CSP and PHA-g-AA nanofiber, as well as an improvement in its water resistance and tensile strength, compared with the PHA/CSP nanofiber. To study the cytocompatibility of the material, human foreskin fibroblasts were seeded onto the nanofiber specimens with 3.0 and 6.0 wt % CSP. Increasing the CSP content in PHA/CSP and PHA-g-AA/CSP nanofibers enhanced cell proliferation; additionally, the nanofibers with CSP showed strong inhibition of bacteria. The enhanced antibacterial and biodegradable properties of PHA-g-AA/CSP and PHA/CSP nanofibers demonstrate their potential for biomedical material applications
