) Grigory Kogan Department of Computer Science Technion - Israel Institute of Technology Haifa 32000, Israel e-mail: [email protected]. Abstract In this paper we consider the complexity of computing permanents over fields of characteristic 3. We present a polynomial time algorithm for computing per(A) for a matrix A such that the rank rg(AA T \Gamma I) 1. On the other hand, we show that existence of a polynomial-time algorithm for computing per(A) for a matrix A such that rg(AA T \Gamma I) 2 implies NP = R. As a byproduct we obtain that computing per(A) for a matrix A such that rg(AA T \Gamma I) 2 is ]P(mod3) complete. Acknowledgement The results of this paper were presented orally in August, 1995 and then in December, 1995 and January, 1996 at the Technion. L. N. Kogan on the Subjectivity of Youth and the Development of the National Sociology of Youth

The article discusses the idea of youth subjectivity and its role in the cultural and social life of society. The author refers to the studies of L. N. Kogan, who developed a multidimensional model of youth, identified five groups of young workers, and revealed qualitative differences between them in the real level of general and professional education. L. N. Kogan emphasized the importance of studying the real problems of youth and finding ways to solve them. He also called for the involvement of young people in the true heights of culture. The author also refers to L.N. Kogan's works on the world of Vladimir Vysotsky's songs and his role in shaping an optimistic life-affirming patriotism for the second post-war generation of youth. The article notes the interrelation of the idea of youth subjectivity with the theory of social risks and a resource approach in the sociology of youth, which are important for understanding and solving problems related to the socialization of youth and its participation in the life of society. In general, the ideas of L.N. Kogan and his followers about the assessment of youth as a subject and object of culture remain relevant and in demand in modern society. They help to understand and solve problems related to the socialization of youth, its participation in cultural and social life, as well as interaction with other groups of society. It is important to continue work in this area to ensure the successful development of youth and society as a whole

Attitudes to the rights and rewards for author contributions to repositories for teaching and learning

In the United Kingdom over the past few years there has been a dramatic growth of national and regional repositories to collect and disseminate resources related to teaching and learning. Most notable of these are the Joint Information Systems Committee’s Online Repository for [Learning and Teaching] Materials as well as the Higher Education Academy’s subject specific resource databases. Repositories in general can hold a range of materials not only related to teaching and learning, but more recently the term ‘institutional repository’ is being used to describe a repository that has been established to support open access to a university’s research output. This paper reports on a survey conducted to gather the views of academics, support staff and managers on their past experiences and future expectations of the use of repositories for teaching and learning. The survey explored the rights and rewards associated with the deposit of materials into such repositories. The findings suggest what could be considered to be an ‘ideal’ repository from the contributors’ perspective and also outlines many of the concerns expressed by respondents in the survey

Too late to be grounded? Action words in foreign and newly acquired languages

Though well established for languages acquired in infancy, the role of embodied mechanisms remains poorly understood for languages learned in middle childhood and adulthood. To bridge this gap, we examined 34 experiments that assessed sensorimotor resonance during processing of action-related words in real and artificial languages acquired since age 7 and into adulthood. Evidence from late bilinguals indicates that foreign-language action words modulate neural activity in motor circuits and predictably facilitate or delay physical movements (even in an effector-specific fashion), with outcomes that prove partly sensitive to language proficiency. Also, data from newly learned vocabularies suggest that embodied effects emerge after brief periods of adult language exposure, remain stable through time, and hinge on the performance of bodily movements (and, seemingly, on action observation, too). In sum, our work shows that infant language exposure is not indispensable for the recruitment of embodied mechanisms during language processing, a finding that carries non-trivial theoretical, pedagogical, and clinical implications for neurolinguistics, in general, and bilingualism research, in particular.Fil: Kogan, Boris. The definitive publisher-authenticated version (Vol. 14 (1), pp. 159-171) is available online at: http://wes.sagepub.com/cgi/reprint/14/1/159The past two decades have witnessed a trend towards the use of fixed-term and part-time contracts in higher education in the UK, where over a third of routine academic work is now carried out by staff on fixed-term contracts (Ainley 1994). As Kogan et al. (1994: 53) have noted, this increased casualisation of academic labour has been driven by the need for universities and colleges to reduce labour costs. The move towards a more ‘flexible’ and cheaper workforce is largely a response to governmental resource restrictions and the need to cope with increased student numbers (Kogan et al. 1994). In order to cope with financial pressures, universities have increasingly sought to diversify their funding and become more entrepreneurial in attracting income from sources other than the government (Wasser 1990; Ziman 1991). External research grants and contracts play an increasingly important role in the finances of many institutions, with a concomitant rise in the number of researchers employed on fixed-term contracts

FINANCE RESEARCH SEMINAR SUPPORTED BY UNIGESTION "WHICH NEWS MOVES STOCK PRICES? A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS" WHICH NEWS MOVES STOCK PRICES? A TEXTUAL ANALYSIS 1

Abstract A basic tenet of financial economics is that asset prices change in response to unexpected fundamental information. Since A basic tenet of financial economics is that asset prices change in response to unexpected fundamental information. Since Roll's (1988) provocative presidential address that showed little relation between stock prices and news, however, the finance literature has had limited success reversing this finding. This paper revisits this topic in a novel way. Using advancements in the area of textual analysis, we are better able to identify relevant news, both by type and by tone. Once news is correctly identified in this manner, there is considerably more evidence of a strong relationship between stock price changes and information. For example, market model R 2 s are no longer the same on news versus no news days (i.e., Roll's (1988) infamous result), but now are 16% versus 33%; variance ratios of returns on identified news versus no news days are 120% higher versus only 20% for unidentified news versus no news; and, conditional on extreme moves, stock price reversals occur on no news days, while identified news days show an opposite effect, namely a strong degree of continuation. A number of these results are strengthened further when the tone of the news is taken into account by measuring the positive/negative sentiment of the news story. 1 Corresponding author: Shimon Kogan, GSB 5.159, McCombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin, 1 University Station, B6600, Austin, TX 78712, Tel: +1 (512) 232-6839, email [email protected].
