Yates' garden guide
No full text41st ed.Yates' Garden Guide was a series produced by the Arthur Yates Company, founded in Auckland in 1883 and expanded to include a Sydney branch in 1887. The first edition appeared in 1895 as Yates' Garden Guide for Australia and New Zealand, but it was only nominally addressed to New Zealand gardeners. In the New Zealand-distributed editions from 1922-1934, revisions took greater account of New Zealand's cooler growing condition. Finally in 1934 a truly New Zealand edition (the 20th) appeared. By 1931 the guidebook was being used in schools as a text book so its influence must have been considerable. Most editions through to the 32nd (1946) saw small revisions. However the Guide was restructured for a ‘new look' edition in 1950 and briefly renumbered as the 1st of three new editions. By 1957 Yates' had reverted to the original sequence of numbers (39th edition 1957). Major rewriting was claimed for the 61st (1987) edition. This long-running series is an outstanding historical resource, encapsulating all significant trends in the history of gardening in New Zealand in the 20th century

No full textThe development of empirical research methods in both the social and the natural sciences has deeply impacted the self- conception of philosophy. Jürgen Habermas aims to strike a balance between two ways of understanding the relationship between philosophy and the sciences: between a conception of philosophy as an Archimedean point from which to view the human condition and a conception of philosophy as a mere artefact of Western culturally embedded assumptions. Against the first, Habermas aims to integrate the resources and methods of the social sciences into philosophy and to deny that philosophy can proceed outside of historical and social contexts. On his view, philosophical knowledge is produced communicatively, through socially embedded dialogue. Against the second, Habermas claims fundamental questions about the human condition cannot be answered by purely social or natural scientific approaches. His “postmetaphysical” methodology aims to integrate empirical resources into philosophy without losing sight of what is unique to philosophy: namely, its ability to step back from the empirical data in order to reconstruct in a systematic way underlying universal truths about us, our societies and our place in the world.This is the author's final version of a book chapter that was published in Jürgen Habermas: The Key Concepts.Yates, Melissa. No full textArnold Yates, 1900-1971, born in Cheshire, UK, was apprenticed as a tool-maker at age 14. Through his membership in the Liverpool Branch of the Independent Labour Party and his own interest and study, he became an expert on William Morris and began collecting Morris materials. In 1919, he opened a bookshop in Liverpool, but, in 1921, joined Messers A. E. Parry and Co., Booksellers, eventually selling the business in 1949 and retiring to the Cotswolds. A bibliophile and collector from adolescence, he never realized his dream of operating a private press. The Arnold Yates Collection contains correspondence to Yates, published and unpublished writings on paper and paper manufacturing, paper samples, and a privately published pamphlet about Yates. The entire collection spans the period from 1850 to 1976 with the majority of the materials falling between 1949 and 1959
