Integrated wireless and sensing technology for dentistry:An early warning system for implant supported prostheses

    No full text
The paper proposes a system for an early warning on the prosthesis performance, in particular in terms of micro-displacements of the implant-prostheses connection, enabling actions to prevent fatal damages to the structure. The system includes a sensor for micro-displacement to be inserted in the prosthesis volume, with embedded wireless communications capabilities. Key elements of the system are the system enabling the wireless transmission of the recorded data and the molecular and biochemical approaches to unravel possible metabolic alterations. For these two elements, the paper presents and discusses several solutions.</p

The effects of sinusoidal interference on the second-order carrier tracking loop preceded by a bandpass limiter in the Block 4 receiver

    No full text
Drop-lock relationships for the second-order phase-locked loop are derived when the carrier and a sinusoidal signal lie within the predetection filter bandwidth of the Block 4 receiver. Limiter suppression factors are calculated when a bandpass hard limiter is used to maintain constant total power at the loop. The parameters of interest are the interference-to-signal power ratio (ISR), the input signal-to-noise power ratio (NSR), and the interference signal frequency offset from carrier delta f. Limiter suppression caused by the combined effects of the noise and the interference signal accounts for the variability in the drop-lock threshold for given values of the input SNR and ISR parameters. Going beyond earlier published work that focused on the limiter's effect on the drop-lock threshold; an account is made for the limiter action in the interference mode and an overall imporvement is provided in the prediction accuracy of the drop-lock model

‘A Musical Bouquet for the Ladies’: Gendered Markets for Printed Music in Eighteenth‐Century England

    No full text
AbstractThis article explores how music publishers recruited the gendered expectations of musical practice to market their scores to male and female audiences. It shows how the graphic and textual elements of title pages and prefaces were used as promotional material and reveals how publishers encoded gendered representations of music making into their printed editions in order to navigate the social worlds in which they were consumed. The opening section will discuss how music publishers appropriated images of courtship scenes on the title pages of keyboard tutors (to market their scores towards young women) and explain how prefaces could be used to placate the feminine associations of musical practice to help publishers sell to a male audience. The discussion will then turn to the concept of gift giving, explaining how graphic imagery could be used to place the score at the centre of elite romantic interactions, modelling expected commercial behaviours.</jats:p

    Confessions to a Plant

"Rajala moved to Powell River and met Allan Brown, a local poet, who edited his chapbook Every Day Working Man. Also written in Powell River, Waiting for Tamara contains poems inspired by living close to nature and reflects the disappearance of freedom in British Columbia. Rajala continues to streak. According to his publisher Joe Ruggier, "Daniel Rajala has faced a lot of difficulty not presenting the right image of a poet that other people in the literary community would like to see. They are still under the impression that a poet has to be a university professor living a quiet and respectable life." -- ABC books website

Preserving Linked Data Integrity on the Semantic Web by application of techniques from Hypermedia

    No full text
This report presents a Literature Review of past work in Hypertext link integrity and current work in the emerging area of Semantic Web link integrity. A design and prototype for a system which applies some ideas from Hypertext link integrity to the Semantic Web is presented alongside plans for future enhancements of this system. In addition other possible avenues of research regarding ideas from traditional Hypertext link integrity are briefly discussed
