The Salience of Hegemonic Masculinity
This article argues that the concept of “hegemonic masculinity” remains highly salient to critical masculinities studies. The author outlines Raewyn Connell\u27s initial formulation of the concept, how that initial model of hegemonic masculinity has been historically misinterpreted, the reformulation of the concept by Connell and Messerschmidt, and the recent scholarly amplification of the concept. The author concludes that Connell’s original emphasis on the legitimation of unequal gender relations remains essential to both the concept and to the field of critical masculinities studies
Masculinities in the Making: From the Local to the Global
In Masculinities in the Making, James W. Messerschmidt unravels the mysteries surrounding the question of how masculinities are actually “made.” One of the most respected scholars on the subject of masculinities, Messerschmidt brings together three seemingly disparate groups—wimps, genderqueers, and U.S. presidents—to examine what insight each has to offer our understanding of masculinities. The book is unique in its coverage, including a revised structured action theory; an intersectional analysis of sex, gender, and sexuality; and an examination of the differences among masculinities from the local to the global. Messerschmidt provides a fresh, accessible, and provocative argument that significantly advances our knowledge on masculinities.https://digitalcommons.usm.maine.edu/facbooks/1180/thumbnail.jp
Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt (1685–1735)
Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt (1685–1735), a physician from Danzig, was sent to Siberia in 1718 by Tsar Peter I, primarily to research the medicinal plants of this vast territory. On his own initiative, Messerschmidt went far beyond this framework and in the course of his expedition of several years (1720–1727), largely on his own, realized a research program that included the disciplines of botany, ornithology, zoology, meteorology, archaeology, linguistics, ethnology. His extremely extensive scientific legacy, including the summary work “Sibiria perlustrata”, has remained unpublished to this day, with a few exceptions. In this monograph, Messerschmidt’s life and work are presented comprehensively for the first time ever. The most important basis of the presentation is the handwritten estate of the explorer, preserved in the St. Petersburg Academy Archives, the components of which are presented in detail. Although this legacy has remained largely unpublished, the research results achieved by Messerschmidt, particularly in the fields of botany and zoology, already had a considerable impact in the 18th century, which is described in more detail in the book
Modellare smorfie. Rilievo e rappresentazione aptica di due teste scultoree di Franz Xaver Messerschmidt / Modeling grimaces. Survey and haptic representation of two sculptural heads by Franz Xaver Messerschmidt
The aim of the research was the survey and the physical reproduction of two busts by Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, made at the end of the 18th Century, now at the Palazzo Coronini Cronberg Foundation in Gorizia, reproducing unusual facial expressions. The goal, therefore, was to acquire the three-dimensional geometry of the objects with a level of detail to ensure the recording of slight skin alterations, to be reproduced physically in high definition with 3D printing systems. The outcome, in fact, should have allowed the tactile understanding of these particular sculptures, with inclusive access mainly to people having reduced visual abilities

Bückling, Maraike, Die phantastischen Köpfe des Franz Xaver Messerschmidt
L’ouvrage d’U.

The drawing depicts all four exterior elevations for the building, along with wall, dormer, and window construction. As of 2021 this building has not been demolished
Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt in Transbaikalia: Cartographic Materials in Archival Heritage
The purposeful scientific study of the Trans-Baikal territories began with the visit of a German scientist
Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt to these areas. He was sent on the Siberian scientific journey by the personal
decree of Peter the Great. D. G. Messerschmidt spent more than a year in Transbaikalia (March 3, 1724 –
March 30, 1725), but this part of his journey is represented in the scientist’s papers in the St. Petersburg Branch
of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPbB ARAS) by only four cartographic drawings of various
nature. This publication introduces these four documents into scientific circulation. The facsimile edition of the
documents is accompanied by their transcription, description and commentary based on D. G. Messerschmidt’s
travel notes, primarily his expedition diary. Two of the documents considered, placed in the text of diary entries
for July 17, 1724 and March 6, 1725 are the fixation of small segments of the traveler’s own route. Two other
drawings are the material received from informants: a copy of the map representing the territory between the Argun
and Shilka rivers at their confluence into the Amur, intended for transfer to the Berg Collegium, and a drawing
of the location of a hot spring near Barguzin, which D. G. Messerschmidt failed to visit. The subjects considered
complement the portrait of D. G. Messerschmidt as a dedicated, conscientious and scrupulous researcher. The introduction of the considered cartographic material into scientific circulation replenishes the range of sources on
the topography of Transbaikalia at the beginning of the 18th century, confirms the localization of rarely mentioned
objects (Gorodishche on the Shilka, Ona Zimovie, etc.) and provides material for local history research
Dataset: On compact packings of the plane with circles of three radii
This dataset is related to the paper "On compact packings of the plane with circles of three radii".
For each of the 248395 elements of the set K defined in Definition 5.1, the dataset contains a file (in JSON format). Each file contains all data required to apply Proposition 6.1, which allows for establishing the bound of 13617 of the number of pairs (r,s) satisfying 0<s<r<1 and which admits a compact packing of circles of radii r,s and 1
Retreatment of archaeological leather from the Roman Fort at Trimontium
Lydia Messerschmidt addressed the impact of previous conservation treatments on archaeological leather. Whilst negative impacts were identified, Lydia presented a successful re-treatment which greatly improved the condition and readability of the objects
