Howarth Collection: Mackintosh House [Historic Photographs]
Bedroom (cropped detail), showing armoire; Principal interiors from the Glasgow home of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh (1864-1933). The couple lived at 78 Southpark Avenue (originally named 6 Florentine Terrace) from 1906 to 1914. Substantial alterations were made in 1906 as Mackintosh remodeled the proportions and natural lighting of the Victorian end-of-terrace house. The house and all the original furniture was purchased by the University of Glasgow in 1946. The house was demolished but the principal rooms have been carefully reconstructed at the Hunterian Museum, completed 1981. These photographs (taken ca. 1910) were part of the Dr. Thomas Howarth collection, sold at Christies, Feb. 17, 1994. Daily Record Printing Works
View along the sculpted sandstone ground floor; The Daily Record Printing Works in Renfield Lane has a frontage finished with white glazed bricks with contrasting blue glazed brickwork over the sculpted sandstone ground floor. It was designed in 1901 and completed in 1904. The lane is a mere 6 metres wide. No satisfactory viewing point can be reached to get a good look at Mackintosh's design intentions. The façade's originality was enhanced by the use of full height tree motifs placed between the bays. Mackintosh created these symbols by the simple use of different coloured bricks. The Daily Record vacated the building in the late 1930's. As of 2007, it is unoccupied. Source: Charles Rennie Mackintosh-Glasgow Buildings; http://www.scotcities.com/mackintosh/ (accessed 7/11/2010
