Using Authentic Literature to Enrich Young Children\u27s Literacy Experiences

    No full text
This article focuses on the five components (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) needed to effectively teach children to read. Early childhood educators can teach these five skills through the use of authentic literature. To be classified as authentic literature, books and texts need to utilize “real life” writing that is written to engage the reader. Authentic narrative texts generally appeal to the reader and offers a theme and a moral to the story. The article explains the five components needed to teach children to read and offers some authentic texts, synopses, and lesson ideas specifically for each of the components. Although children may not be able to read the texts, the texts selected are at the child’s listen-ing comprehension level. In addition, the selected texts will aid early childhood educators and parents in infusing these skills for engaging implementation

A long-read phased assembly of the highly heterozygous fig (Ficus carica L.) genome reveals epigenetic patterns.

Assembly of non-model plant species is challenging due to high DNA heterozygosity and repeat content. Here, we report our work to build a high-quality genome reference using single-molecule, real-time sequencing for one of the oldest known domesticated species: the fig (Ficus carica L.). Using long-read sequencing data performed better than combining long and short-reads. The assembled fig genome is ~333 Mb of which 80% have been anchored to 13 chromosomes. The genome has an estimated repeat content of 37% and contains 37,840 protein-coding genes. Genome-wide analysis of N6-methyladenine and N4-methylcytosine have revealed high methylation levels in both genes and transposable elements and a prevalence of methylated over un-methylated genes. The high quality reference genome along with the characterization of methylation profiles of two unconventional DNA modifications provide an important resource not only for fig breeding but also for investigating the relationship between specific epigenetic changes and the phenotype of plants

    Reading in the mobile era

Mobile technology can advance literacy and learning in underserved communities around the world. Summary Millions of people do not read for one reason: they do not have access to text. But today mobile phones and cellular networks are transforming a scarce resource into an abundant one. Drawing on the analysis of over 4,000 surveys collected in seven developing countries and corresponding qualitative interviews, this report paints the most detailed picture to date of who reads books and stories on mobile devices and why. The findings illuminate, for the first time, the habits, beliefs and profiles of mobile readers. This information points to strategies to expand mobile reading and, by extension, the educational, social and economic benefits associated with increased reading. Mobile technology can advance literacy and learning in underserved communities around the world. This report shows how

The construction of Karen Karnak: The multi-author-function

This thesis is situated within the comparatively recent developments of Web 2.0 and the emergence of interactive WikiMedia, and explores the mode of authorship within a Read/Write culture compared to that of a Read/Only tradition. The hypothesis of this study is that the role of the audience has become merged with the author, and as such, represents new functions and attributes, distinct from a more conventional concept of authorship, in which the roles of audience and author are more separate. Read/Write and participatory culture, as defined by this study, is focused on collaboration, and includes the influences of D.I.Y. culture, Open-Source practices and the production of text by multiple authors. Multi-authorship presents a re-thinking of several concepts which support the notion of the individual author, since the focus of multi-authorship is not on attribution and ownership of a finished text, but on the continued malleability of a text. Modes of multi-authorship, demonstrated in the use of the pseudonyms Alan Smithee and Karen Eliot, represent declarative authors whose names signify multiple origins, whilst concurrently indicating a distinct body of work. The function of these names form an important context to this study, since primary research involves the construction of an experimental mode of multi-authorship utilising WikiMedia technology and the interaction of thirty nine participants, who are invited to create a body of work under the collective pseudonym Karen Karnak. The data generated by this experiment is analysed using aspects of Michel Foucault's author-function to identify and determine power structures inherent in the WikiMedia context. The interplay of power structures, including concepts such as identity, ownership and the body of work, affect the resulting mode of authorship and contribute to the construction of Karen Karnak, suggesting further areas of research into the emerging multi-author

Experimental nasopharyngeal colonization by Neisseria meningitidis using explant organ culture

    No full text
This chapter will describe the use of organ cultures of human nasopharyngeal mucosa to study the interaction of Neisseria meningitidis with this complex tissue. Colonization of nasopharyngeal mucosa is the first step in the pathogenesis of meningococcal disease. Supporting evidence for this is the correlation between the prevalence of community carriage and the occurrence of meningococcal disease (1). During nonepidemic periods, the baseline prevalence of nasopharyngeal carriage of meningococci is 5-10% but is considerably higher in certain populations such as military personnel (2), and in households of cases (3). There are a number of influences on the acquisition of meningococcal carriage; these include smoking (4) but not season (5). It is possible that coincident viral infections may affect acquisition of meningococ cal carriage (6,7). There is good evidence that genetic factors are involved, as some individuals appear resistant to acquisition of carriage, while others chronically or intermittently carry N. meningitidis (8). Carriage of the organism also appears to be associated with secretor status (9). The precise site within the nasopharynx that Neisseria meningitidis colonizes and invades is not known. However, during natural carriage, the organism can be isolated both from the rhinopharynx and from the throat (10).</p
