This volume is a collection of edited scientific papers presented at the International Conference on Mechanics of Masonry Structures Strengthened with Composites Materials (MuRiCo7) held online (November 24-26, 2021). The previous Conferences, organised by AICO (Italian Association of Composites in Constructions, established in 1996), were held at the University IUAV of Venice (years 2000, 2004, 2009) and University of Bologna, a campus of Ravenna (2014) and a campus of Bologna (2017, 2019). This International Conference, MuRiCo7, was organized by AICO under the patronage of DICAM Department of University of Bologna, DA Department of University of Bologna, and RILEM (International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures). The Conference represented a forum to promote and exchange the latest theoretical, computational, and experimental research works finalised to the design of structural strengthening of historic masonry constructions. The MuRiCo7 covers a wide range of general topics: • Mechanics of historical masonry: testing and modeling • Performance of strengthened masonry with composites (FRP, FRCM, TRM, SRG) • Performance in masonry/composites coupling: bond, special connections, fracture, fatigue, fire, durability • Appropriate composites techniques evolution for historical construction strengthening • First aid and provisional devices in historical structures with collapse risk after seismic shock • Criticism on existing guidelines, standards, and praxis in masonry/composites coupling • Sustainability, circular economy, life-cycle assessment, and recycling. The Editors would like to thank the members of the Scientific Committee and the organizers of the special mini symposiums for their support that contributed to the success of the Conference. Furthermore, we express our gratitude to AICO, promoting and organizing the Conference. The Editors G. Castellazzi, C. Gentilini and A. First results of a 3D pull-out model of steel anchors in fired-clay bricks

No full text
The paper reports the results of a numerical simulation performed to study the experimental pull-out behavior of twisted steel connectors inserted in fired-clay brick units. The experimental results obtained in a previous campaign are used to calibrate a 3D refined numerical model developed by means of the finite element program Abaqus. The numerical model is tuned to accurately reproduce the experimental results in terms of loads and bar displacements

An experimental investigation on pull-off tests conducted on FRP composites applied to brick units

No full text
In the present study, a series of pull-off tests is performed to determine the bonding properties of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites applied to a brittle substrate. Pull-off test is simple, fast and cheap and it is generally employed to evaluate the bond strength between the composite and the substrate. It is a procedure that can be easily performed on-site for checking the quality of the reinforcement adhesion. A steel composite made of a unidirectional steel fabric embedded in an organic matrix (bicomponent epoxy resin) was applied to the surface of fired-clay bricks. A shallow core perpendicular to the surface was realized in the test specimen, leaving the core attached to the brick. A steel dolly was glued to the external surface of the core using epoxy adhesive. A loading device was employed to apply the tensile force until failure. The effects of moisture presence on the substrate and shape of the cores on the pull-off strength were investigated

It is similar to T. azari, T. maccus and T. gharalii in having radiate wing pattern, and similar aculeus shape, but like T. azari, the short brown ray in dm cell basal to the level of r-m reaches only the mid-width of cell dm or Cu1 (whereas this ray reaches the middle of cell cu 1 in T. maccus and T. gharalii). T. sophus also differs from T. azari in having the brown area around the apex of R2+3 with a broad Ushaped spot (including the small hyaline spot at R2+3 apex) darker than the remaining pattern (Fig. 9). Both male and female with 2 hyaline spots in cell r1 (Gentilini et al., 2006: Figs. 30–33, 36–38). The oviscape in this species is about as long as the preceding three abdominal tergites.
Published as part of Namin, Saeed Mohamadzade, Korneyev, Severyn V., Parchami-Araghi, Mehrdad & Gilasian, Ebrahim, 2015, Revision of the Tephritis maccus species group (Diptera: Tephritidae) with description of a new species from Iran, pp. 589-599 in Zootaxa 3956 (4) on page 597, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.3956.4.10, http://zenodo.org/record/238693</a&gt

Adhesion between SRP and masonry: Influence of moist condition of specimens and presence of salts in the substrate

No full text
In recent years, steel reinforced polymer (SRP) composites have emerged as a new technology for structural reinforcement, and several researches have validated the effectiveness of SRP for masonry strengthening. Research has been carried out to study the bond behavior of SRP composites applied to a masonry substrate. However, how the moist and salt on masonry surface will affect bond, which is the weak link in real strengthening applications, is little known yet. This study aims at investigating the bond behavior of SRP composites applied to moist and salt-laden masonry blocks that were subjected to an artificial weathering protocol. Single-lap shear tests were conducted to determine the bond behavior, while ion chromatography provided the salts distribution of weathered specimens to interpret the results of the shear tests

Mechanical properties of fired-clay brick masonry models in moist and dry conditions

No full text
Rising damp is one of the main issues affecting masonry buildings. However, its consequences on the mechanical performance of masonry structures are not so largely explored. In this paper, the compressive and shear behaviour of masonry triplets, manufactured with solid fired-clay bricks and cement-based mortar, is investigated in dry and moist conditions. The results are interpreted on the basis of the features of the single materials, from both a mechanical and microstructural point of view
